ADEBIMPE

I started my work at Mr Charles house and anytime I go there it’s either I stayed more than my work time or one thing or the other keep me waiting until Mr Charles comes or when he’s around. I stood at the front of his door to enter. I searched my bag and couldn’t find the key.

“Where did I keep this key? I thought I kept it in my bag yesterday.

Yesterday was the most happiest moment of my life, because I was carried out by Mr Charles to a beautiful garden at Continental Suite along Omida. His smiling face and composure could send a woman into love depression. He said he wanted to show his gratitude for always being there for him. Yes, I know. And I’m certain he truly understand my companion and commitment at work. I left to my father house at late hour, I was expecting father to complain but he didn’t and instead he told me to put more pressure in other to have him.

“Yohhhhh father is such a funny man. How on earth is he expecting me to imposed myself on him. What if he doesn’t feel the same? What if he’s just being kind to me as a generous man? I don’t want to do what will end up hurting me and moreover my husband hasn’t accepted my divorce statement. So basically I’m literally still in connection with my husband. It’s better I focused on my job and nothing more.

I kept looking around and doesn’t know what to do. I called Mr Charles instead and explained to him.

“Can you wait for me?.”

“Till when sir?.”

“I have told you to stop saying *sir* Adebimpe. My name is Charles! Charles!.”

I remembered he has told severally to stop the saying of *sir* but it sounds awkward to call him by his name. Ever since he came to my house, he has changed his narrative of calling me by my daughter name to Adebimpe. Well, I didn’t see it to be anything because at least he’s my boss and way older than me.

“But sir….

“You have started again.”

“I think it will take me time to adapt to it. Let me continue my sir and I know that gradually I will say what you wanted.”

“You should better say Mr Charles then, and I’m sure that one day you will say my name.

“No problem sir…yes sir…. Okay bye!.

I ended the call immediately stuttering.

“And he has not said when he will be back. No problem, I will wait till he comes.

After more than 2 hours of waiting, my daughter called me and said she will be coming home tomorrow.

“Why?.” I asked.

“We have a break.”

“Break?.”

“Yes Mom. Anyways I have some gist for you when I come.

“Hmmm’ Adesewaaaa what is it this time around?.

“Don’t worry mom. When I come okay. Send my regards to grandpa and your boss.

“Alright my darling. Take care 😘 bye.

“Bye! Love you mom!.” She said as we disconnected the call.

“What a wonderful daughter (cleaning her tears) I just hope my aim of divorcing Josiah won’t affect her. I hope they won’t tell me to return her since my partner wanted to separate with me. I don’t even know how Josiah is fairing now, if his wife his taking care of him. How is he able to cope with his daily living. And he didn’t even call me for once. I just hope he’s okay or should I go and visit him? What if Adebimpe comes and requested to go see him, what should I say to her about the HIV he contracted. How will she be able to take everything that Nkechi had done to me if I told her what she confessed before dying. Will Adesewa be able to forgive her father? Will she ever want to have anything doing with him again? Hmm’ God! Please in your infinite mercy, have mercy upon him and grant him good health. I know he caused all these upon himself, but I will still be grateful to him for not having anything doing with me. If not what would have become of me? A barren woman with an HIV status. Ha! God forbid! Nkechi really ruined his life. How is he going to be maintaining his health, money for drugs nko? Asé óró àgbà ti só pé wípé àgúñtàn tò bà bà àjà rín ó dí dóndón kó jégbé. Josiah tí bà Nkechi Rin, o tí bà jeun odé tí wà bà jégbé bàyi. (An elderly words says a goat that follows a dog around is definitely going to eat his faeces. Josiah had followed and dined with Nkechi and now he has eaten her faeces)

“Adebimpe! Adebimpeeee.”

I looked up regaining myself from the brooding and saw Mr Charles standing at my front.

“What are you thinking? I have been standing her for more than 10 minutes looking at you.

“I am sorry sir…I mean Mr Charles.” I stood up immediately dusting off my cloth.

“Are you okay?.

“Yes. I am.” I said smiling.

I collected the key from him and opened the door.

“Are you sure? .

“I am sir.”

“I bought this for you.” He said handling over a shopping bag to me.

“Why do you have to buy this for me sir (he shakes his head) I mean Mr Charles.

“It is normal. You have been wonderful to me.” He said and started removing his jacket and hold it walking inside.

“I might not come tomorrow Mr Charles.”

“Why?.” He asked looking back at me.

“My daughter is coming back from school and I will need to be there for her.

“That’s good. Can I help out by carrying her at the bus stop.”

I laughed and he asked why.

“Why will you want to carry her sir. She can come home by herself.” I answered.

He dropped his jacket on the dining table and came towards me. I couldn’t hold back my myself as I look away pretending to turns to go. He dragged my hand to stop me telling me to wait.

“What is it sir?.” I asked in a shaking voice.

I now vividly understand how it feels when you’re around someone you might be crushing on. My mind keeps telling me to comport myself, reminding me that I’m still married. He suddenly laughed after staring into my eyes for some minutes. I could hear the sound of his breathing and the deodorant smells oozing out from his cloth.

“Are you okay?.” He asked dressing my hair with his hand.

“Of course! I’m okay. “ I answered even though I wasn’t .

“I think you should change your hairstyle.”

“Why?.” I asked feeling uncomfortable.

“I want you to look prettier than this.”

“I am pretty already like this Mr Charles, and moreover I’m not a spinster. I’m 35 years sir and I have a daughter and a…a…a husband!.” I answered almost out of breath calling my husband.

He let go off my hand and look upset.

“Why do you still have that moron in your heart? I thought you have moved on. Why don’t you keep him out from your mind why? Why Adebimpe?.

He said walking around the parlor like someone that just encountered failure.

“He is still my husband Mr Charles and we haven’t divorced yet. I only moved out because of what happened.

“Then go and get a divorce Adebimpe, get a divorce and free yourself from such a man or do you want to go back and be infected by the HIV? Is he the type of father you want your daughter to go stay with?.

“But, she is our adopted daughter! She’s not my child! I am scared of loosing my daughter, if our divorce should eventually be granted. Wha….”

“What! You’re not her mother?.” He asked surprisingly looking at me. But, you didn’t tell me all these, while discussing about your family at your father’s house. Like…Adebimpe, you have no child for that fool?.

“I don’t .” I answered.

“Then, what is now your stressed? You getting divorced doesn’t affect your daughter. You can settle everything in court on who the child will be with.
