UNMARRIED AT THIRTY

EP 10

Two days to the day Toluwani and George were to embarked on the official travels scheduled by the company, Toluwani had unintentionally overhead George’s conversation with someone on the phone when she wanted to submit the requested documents. What she heard made her heart more conflicting and indecisive, she had initially concluded to quenched whatever kind of infatuation she had contracted towards George but right that moment she couldn’t be sure of what she would do if truly he did as he narrated.

“Believe me, Toluwani is the best woman you can think of in this days and times, she’s responsible and beautiful. Trust me, you know my sagacious ability when it comes to trusting people. I promise you will like her. Ehh, in few days time we would be flying to Abuja for a business seminar, i planned confessing my love for her. If she agrees, i won’t waste time doing the needful. Thank you for wishing me good luck” George told the person on the other side of the phone.

Toluwani didn’t go inside again, she tiptoed away blushing like a teenager but this innocent happiness was brutally questioned when she went back to her office. As she sat down replaying what she had heard few minutes ago, she questioned herself what exactly she felt for George. Toluwani knew it wasn’t real love, it was just a fleeting infatuation. She bite on the tip of the cover of the pen in her hand as a vivid imagery of her security guard displayed in her mind. She wondered if something was wrong with her, how could she weigh between a security guard under her payroll with a young director of a well known and reputable company. It felt like something stronger and cunning was playing some games on her.

She pinched her cheek determining if she was dreaming or hallucinating but the wincing vibration she received reminded her , she wasn’t wasn’t asleep therefore dream wasn’t a possibility.

Titilayo was perturbed by the ludicrous mistreatment she had received from her past two marriages which not only affected her mental health but also distorted her physical look. Titilayo, after graduating from the University had married to a very wealthy and influencial business mogul, he had the luxury you could imagine and his taste for opulence was like that of a king whose aim was nothing but building castles with the blood of the people to satisfy his odd hobby of luxuries.

“And so what, she’s carrying my baby, something you could not do after so many nights together. She , your maid even though it was an unplanned one night, she’s carrying a child for me. I have waited and patient enough but it’s obvious that you can’t give me a child. Only God knows what you have used your womb to do” Titi’s husband had told her coldly like how carrier’s of leprosy were treated. With no regards for Titilayo whom he had married legally.

It was a year and few months into their marriage that the housemaid started acting weird. Always dizzy and tired lying around in the house like an overfed mouse, she was either sleeping or eating. When Titilayo noticed this, she suspected the possibility of pregnancy but she waved it aside. Saratu was just 20 years old, her husband wouldn’t stooped so low to have canal knowledge of the girl but her defense and reason was thrown out of the window when she confessed to have slept with the husband a certain afternoon when Titilayo was out with her friends.

That afternoon Saratu was at the parlour after cleaning the floor, she wore a vest top and a bumshot that covered very little of her buttocks. Though she was the only one at home, she wouldn’t be blamed for wearing something so revealing of her young edible flesh. She was about going to her quarter to have some rest when her master entered, it was surprising that he came home at such time.

“When is my wife?” He inquired not looking at her.

“She said, she wants to check up on her friends”.

“Please get me a glass of water”.

When Saratu returned, he had already stood up and was about to go. “Sir the water”. He took the water and gulped it down telling her he came just to pick a file he had forgotten. As Saratu collected the cup and mosey away, his eyes unintentionally beckoned on her buttocks. He was immediately bewitched, he called Saratu and asked if she could have a child for him. “I will treat you well, i will send you back to school to any level if you can give birth to a child for me. He had told Saratu who was weighing between her life of constant penury to the kind of life she could live with Chief.

“But sir, promise me you won’t go back on your words” she asked with a pawky face with lines of smiles written upon it. “I Know you’re still young and i promise i won’t hurt your future” with this words , his suitcase was dropped on the floor. The door bolt went in and Saratu and Titilaya’s husband had sexx which eventually resulted to pregnancy.

Titilayo was nonchalantly rebuked for trying to chastised her husband. “I have been patient enough, don’t be mad at the little girl, it was my idea. You can choose to stay or go”. He had told her unremorsefully. Titilayo got divorced when he started to physically abusing her while pampering the little homewrecker as she was called by Titilayo.

Toluwani’s phone rang and it was Jumoke her sister, she contemplated on answering or not but settled for the formal. “Hello” Jumoke’s voice was shaky and troubling. It clearly suggested they was a trouble looming behind her peaceful paradise but she immediately composed herself and pretended she was as fine as an old wine.

“You don’t sound great madam married woman” Toluwani remarked sarcastically. This remark was like a hot melting rod piercing through the veins of a living person. “I’m fine, bye” she hastily replied and disconnected the phone
