(Episode 4)
2 years later, we all graduated from school, and I went back to the village…but my parent were not comfortable with the fact that I graduated from school and returned back to the village as their first daughter so they gave me some money to go and rent a house in calabar town and maybe get a job or start business
So I left the village, rented the house in town and started food stuffs business….I was always going to my local government area where food stuffs was cheaper, buy them like garri, plantain, yam and palm oil then keep them in front of my house in the city and sell.
The business was really moving, people started ordering garri in bags, oil in large quantities and many other items which helped me to carry 3 of my sisters from the village to stay and school with me in town while I was still sending my parents money for upkeep.
I had forgotten all about men, because of what Jerry did to me back in school.
One day, my neighbour mama Oluchi from Igbo,
Came into my room as if she wanted to buy something, and asked me jokingly if I am actually a woman, that she has never seen any man in my house…
I smiled and told her my first experience with Jerry which has kept me away from men totally because I am determined to keep my virginity till marriage…
She was very happy to hear that I am still a virgin at 30 and encouraged me to keep hustling, very soon a man will come and marry me.
Few days later, I heard someone saying that the state civil service commission was employing, then he explained all the requirements and criteria for applying…. when I asked him.
I picked up my documents immediately and ran to the office and applied, I was interviewed and employed in less than no time and posted to ministry of education.
A year after working with the ministry, I met Mike who was also a staff of the ministry.
He was as black as me, very jovial, friendly and funny,
He started calling me “my colour” from the first day we met
Me and Mike became so close that I started developing feelings for him, I looked forward to meet him in the office every day and any day he doesn’t come feels like something is missing.
I noticed that he felt the same way for me…. But none of us had phone so we could only meet in the office which did not give us the privacy to express how we were feeling for each other.
One morning, I got to the office and saw a letter on my desk,
After reading the letter which said 👇
“Stella I have grown to love you so much, please will you be my girlfriend?” I lifted my face up and saw Mike smiling from his desk
I didn’t reply the letter or say anything to him yet because I was still thinking if I should say yes or not
But clearly looking at my age 31, age is not on my side at all
So the next day morning, I left him a letter on his desk saying yes I accept!
