Chapter Four
After I was beaten by my grandmother I was grounded in the house from going out for several days. I was not happy at all as I knew Ada would have waited for me severally without seeing me showing up so one morning as my grandma is about going out I held unto her leg pleading that I won’t ever go against her command again.
“I have heard you my son but, i am not letting you out this time around”. she said carrying her bag telling me to get up.
“if you don’t want me to go out then, can Emeka come over it seems you have told him not to.
I started crying begging her as she eventually accepted to only let Emeka come over but she must not see me outside until she comes back.
“no problem grandma, I will stay indoor if that is what you want. I said in which she left closing the door.
I sat up on the chair relaxing as i starred at my plate of food cover on the center table thinking about how Ada would be right now if she could be sleeping or at the market with her mother already or probably at our meeting point to check on me again.
“ohhhh what kind of thing is this ehn! I never knew my grandma could really locked me up because of a girl. habba! is Ada not pretty enough. infact when she comes back I most surely ask her why she doesn’t like her.
I suddenly slept off some minutes after thinking of Ada. I saw myself in the same stream as I saw Ada from afar backing me in which I went closer to tap her.
“Ada!. I called out as she turns back at me looking sad.
“what happened? why are you not happy?. I asked as she kept mute just looking at me.
I tried to make her smile as I began to sing and dance around her but still she wasn’t happy with me.
I suddenly fell from the chair and hit my leg at the center table leg painful.
“Auch!!! Auch!!!!. I yelled out holding my leg in pain.
“this could be the results of Ada angriness oooo. I said almost in tears as I heard a knock on the door.
I jumped on one leg to the door and ask who is there as Emeka answered that he is the one in which I opened the door for him.
“what happened to you again?. he asked looking at me from head to toe.
I ignored him as I sat back on the chair but, immediately he saw my plate of food he quickly went to eat and open it while salivating as he sat down to start consuming it.
“are you okay at all!. I said in annoyance while he smiled at me while looking at the food.
“there’s love in sharing ooo city boy. he said immediately as he began to eat without my consent.
I jumped on him pinning him down as he begged me to release him not to choke him to de ath because of food.
“watin happen? you wan pemen me because of small food obi? na wa ooo why are you stingy like this? but you do give me to eat before na. he said looking at me in amusement.
I told him to help me stretched my leg as he requested I should give him the food first before he can do it. I had no choice than to let him eat but didn’t let him eat it alone as we both eat together.
he suddenly asked why my grandmother refused letting him come to our house not until now. I then explain what happened to him as he staggered on the floor laughing continuously.
“what’s funny now?. I asked squeezing my face at him.
“infact mama fashion should have hang that your hand you use to pour water on her on a rope and then whip your bumbum very well. he said again laughing in which I carried my food away from his front telling him not to ever touch or else I will break is hand.
“well, hope you didn’t tell her that I was the one planned how you two get to meet each other. he asked sitting back on the chair.
I told him I didn’t tell her anything about it since I already knew she found out I went to meet her. he asked me what I will do about us not being able to meet up at our appointed place.
“you know what. I said smiling at him as I went to the fridge and bring out my drink that was given to me by my grandma some days ago. I gave it to him as he looked at me suspiciously.
“wait…wait..oo this one you happily went to bring out drink for me I hope you’re not trying to make a request from me?. he said twisting his eyes as I told him to collect it first.
I probably know how to get him whenever I needed something from him. I told to help me for the last time just to see Ada that this time around it will be a secret because I also don’t want my grandma to know either.
“wait ooo you sure say this girl never give you witch chop! because I don’t seems to get these your obsession this days ooo watin happen sef?!. he asked looking at me to be sure I’m very okay in which I threw his hands off me.
I told him if he’s not ready to help he should just talk instead of uttering nonse nse. he collected the drink from me as I told him I will even give him my new imported Italian shoe my mother sent to me in which his face got brightening while asking if I’m sure about it.
“of course! I will give you.
“what if your grandma Sees it. he asked.
“you’re right Sha but I will talked to her about it and I’m very sure she will let me give you.
“okay, if you say. so, what do you want me to do for you?. he asked.
I told him to find a way to tell Ada that I really wanted to see her and to also explain to her while I couldn’t come down to our said place.
“so, how do you plan to see her. he asked.
“just tell her to come here by “7pm tomorrow evening if she’s coming from her sister house.
“hah! what about your grandma is she not going to see you two?. he asked
I told him not to worry about it as I know we won’t be see by her. I told him how I lied to come his house tomorrow so that I can stay longer in other to come home late and then make sure I see her before I entered.
“but, I’m sure my grandma would have started her round one sleep because she do sleep early.
He told me this will be the last time I will impli cate him in my wanting to see Ada that he doesn’t want any trouble at all.
AT NIGHT
Mama fashion was happy she met me at home when she returned in the afternoon and so she allowed me go to Emeka house but I was told to come back home on time. while I was in Emeka house he had gone to search for her in which he came back and told me he tried all his possiblity for her to come see me but she said she is not coming just because she’s angry with me. I wasn’t happy at all and had to leave his house around 5pm I told him not to follow me as I requested to go alone.
“sorry ooo city boy. why don’t you forget this Ada of a thing because I don’t even know why you’re just too cra zy about her.
“you won’t understand. I said bidding him bye as he reminded me of the shoe I said I would tell my grandma about.
I was still lo st in thought when I came across those boys that beat me as I could recognize them immediately. I ran into an uncompleted building as I hide away from them to pass, I then heard a voice behind me.
“what are you doing here obi?. I looked around at the said voice and was surprised seeing Ada.
“what are you doing here too or have you been stalking me also or is those guys after you again?. I asked looking at here surprisingly.
“this is my aunty house. she said as I looked at her hand realizing she’s carrying a little baby.
I looked around the building as I wondered why they could be living in a building like this just as if she knew what I was thinking about.
“don’t worry about the building my aunt husband will soon complete it. she said smiling at me.
those boys walked passed us as they also greeted Ada in which she answered them and I was surprised. I then asked why she would be talking to them when they have once wanted to ra pe her. she told me her parents have deal with them so they can’t try anything like that again.
I was amazed like if I had di ed while fighting them that day so, this is how they would have deal with them and I will be looking at them from heaven.
“what are you thinking again?. she said while I snapped back to reality.
I told her I would be going as she held me back telling me she has heard everything Emeka came to tell her but she doesn’t want to come because of my grandma. I was still surprised on how her aunty house is along the path to my house and I didn’t know all this while.
“but, I have told him to tell you that you shouldn’t worry that she can’t see us.
she went inside and dropped her aunty baby and came outside as we sat in an empty room where we can’t be seen as we talked about ourselves. I then realized she’s a loveable person as she told me how she do help her parents at home including her aunty. she said is not that she can’t love me but her mother is also the problem as she doesn’t know while she is also against it. I told her not to worry that I will tell her to my mother so that when they come I will take her along to the city.
“Really?. she said joyfully.
I gave her a positive response in which I was not even sure of, as she told me she has always wanted to experience how the city look like ever since her uncle came over to their house with his children but he has always be promising her mother that he would come pick her one day so that she can further her education there.
“then don’t worry just have faith about it he will surely come and take you over there. I said as she smiles.
we both cracked jokes as I told her about my dream as she laughed continuously telling me I was having those dreams because I have been thinking about her too much but the singing and dancing part is only good that she only likes to do both in reality. I looked out and realized is already dark as I told her I would be going.
“let me inform my sister also so that we can walk together. she said as she ran inside and came out some minutes later beckoning to let go.
immediately we got to the back of my house I held unto her hand as I told her I would do anything to make sure she becomes my wife in future and also take her along with me to obodo oyinbo (Abroad). she was just smiling and happy as she hugged me telling me to please take care of myself and never to allow my grandma beat me again.
I told her she doesn’t likes to beat me like that as she cherished me very well. I held unto her waist lost in thought of love while looking at her when I suddenly saw a reflection of light shining towards us.
immediately Ada looked over there she shouted that it’s my grandma as I throwed my face away to the other side hoping that she won’t see me as we hurried away back into the dark.
“I hope you are not done for tonight like this Obinna? Ada said frightening as she held unto me crying.
I told her not to worry that I am a strong boy and moreover she might not see me.
