MY DESTINY HELPER

“It’s already midnight and I’m feeling sleepy,” I muttered to him, my eyes already feeling heavy and eager for some rest. “I’m really sorry about everything. I overheard everything. If you need anything at all, just let me know. I’ll try my best to buy you a phone before the week is over,” he said, gripping my left hand tightly.
“Okay, sir. Thank you. Please help me express my gratitude to your parents for everything they’ve done for me. I’m at a loss for words. I don’t know how to properly thank them,” I said sadly, kneeling before him. “Please get up. It’s okay. You’re already part of us. I’ll be going. We’ll talk tomorrow okay?” I said, laid me on my bed, covered me with my mattress and left.
Pastor advised me to join the choir team and I gladly agreed. Mrs. Rebecca was always looking out for me just like she does for hervown daughter. She offered me a position in her boutique. The boutique was filled with an array of clothing and I had the opportunity to observe how she carefully sewn and delivered some garments, sleeves and gowns to her customers.
When I turned 23, Rebecca and pastor generously provided my own fashion shop. The location was a bit close to their house. I began sewing clothes for customers and saving some money. Meanwhile, Collins had been a supportive presence in my life. During the previous Christmas and valentine, he surprised me with numerous gifts. It was the first time a man had ever given me such thoughtful presents. It was through him I got the android phone I was using.
I had memorized my parents’ phone numbers by heart, but each time I can, they weren’t going through.
Most of the nights I’d just relax in my bed thinking about my life and appreciating God for bringing me that far.
“Father I thank you for everything you have done to me. Mummy, Daddy I know you’re still alive and I promise to return back very soon.”
“Who knows what might have happened to Khedia and Co, I know the kind of pains all those girls are passing through.”
“That useless madam. I just wish I could strange her aaaaarrrrrhhgggghh…” I shouted, my voice choked with tears as I clenched my left hand in anger. “That heartless man who dares to call himself a chief. Remembering all those horrible moments… Oh Jesus. Look at how far I have gotten. I feel sorry for my friends, I truly do. If only I could turn back time and save them.”
“No matter the amount of preaching from pastor, I will never forgive those people. Only God will judge them!”
Despite staying there for over two years, I still couldn’t understand the “Togolese Ewe” and “French” they were the two main languages that everyone were speaking there.
We were all in the dining room eating one particular evening although I was finding it difficult to eat. As I was scrolling through my phone, I came across a recent tweet shared by some security operatives. It showed a group of men and young guys sitting shirtless on the empty ground, lined up in a row. My heart raced when I noticed that one of the faces resembled the chief who had captured me. Without hesitation, I handed the phone over to Rebecca, feeling a sense of urgency.
“Yes, what is it?” Rebecca exclaimed, her gaze fixed on me as she finished reading. “According to this, it seems they’re kidnappers and will be going through trials and be brought to court,” she stated, her voice filled with concern.” She stated.
“No, no, no, Mummy, T-that, T-that man,” I stammered, struggling to form coherent words as I pointed at one of the men in the photo. “You… you all still don’t understand,” I managed to utter, my voice trembling with fear and desperation.
“M..Miriam, what is it?” my dad and Collins inquired simultaneously, as they set down their spoons and their faces were etched with worry.
