Life imprisonment Episode 32

LIFE IMPRISONMENT 32

WRITTEN BY: GRACE OLAYEMI

Mr Emmanuel was informed about Danger’s confession and he immediately began investigation on it. He had been praying ever since Danger was caught and had refused to co-operate with their investigation. His wife also did not relent in her prayers and they were both believing God that Danger would co-operate with them so they could have tangible evidence to present to the court.

The number of senators, commissioners, senior secretaries and top politicians that were cut in the web were unbelievable. Mr Emmanuel could not fathom why such respected citizens would be involved with a lot of shady things.

“They hold public offices and should be responsible for the public but they were the real cause of the trauma the people were facing.”

“They used Danger and his gang to terrorize the incumbent government so they could discredit them and use it as a campaign strategy.”

“This country needs a complete revolution.”

Mr Emmanuel handled the case personally and he continued to connect the dots between all the people Danger had mentioned.

Danger gave him the location of all the evidence he had to support his claim. Everything was ready to nail those criminals and everyone anticipated the day for the court appearance.

“No wonder Danger had always escaped prosecution. Even the ambitious SP that apprehended him some years back was transferred before he could breathe.”

“I can’t believe this is happening,” Chief Morris said as the party members all took their seats for the emergency party meeting that was called, immediately one of their boys monitoring Danger in the police custody informed them that Danger had started mentioning their names and he even went as far as to intimate them that he had concrete evidence to support his claims.

“I told you that boy was up to no good. We should have just silenced him immediately he was caught.”

“I thought he would be useful for us once he got out.”

“Can you see where that thought has landed us?”

“That guy knows too much about us and his living is a threat to us. Keeping him alive was a great mistake.”

“There is no point beating a dead horse. Let’s arrange his elimination immediately.”

The party leader brought out his phone and dialed his police informant’s number.

“Get rid of Danger tonight. Find whatever evidence he has and destroy it immediately,” he said and ended the call.

“But, that lawyer is working for us. We should have no problem with whatever Danger confessed.”

“The lawyer is working for us but the SP is not, the prosecution is not and even that lawyer is not totally with us.”

“This is his first job for us and see how everything is turning into a mess.”

“We are paying him a huge sum to acquit that bastard so he would listen to us.”

“Call him here immediately.”

Abraham’s boss was summoned by the members of the Exquisite Party and he went in the company of Abraham.

Abraham was asked to divulge everything Danger told him but the latter refused claiming that he had no right to give his client’s information to a third party.

“Are you mad? We gave you the job. We are your client so you will do whatever we say,” Chief Morris screamed.

“You are not the one that gave me the job. I got the job from my boss and as a legal practitioner himself he knows the implication of telling a third party confidential information about my client.”

Silence rented the air after this and Abraham sighed. He somehow knew such a day would come when he would sit face to face with those corrupt politicians that Danger had mentioned and they would demand to control and use him like they had been using his boss. He had prayed for the grace to be bold and confront them and he could feel that boldness oozing out of him.

“Why did you bring a novice into this? Talk to him immediately.”

“Calling me aside would be of no use,” Abraham said immediately his boss signaled to him to come for a private discussion.

“I am a man of principle and integrity. I don’t involve myself with anything shady or illegal. You might have thought that I agreed to this case because of the 3 million Naira but that is far from correct. I took up this case because God wanted me to and the more I know, the more I realize why he wanted me to handle it.”

“3 million? We gave you 5 million!”

“Really? Maybe my boss took his share,” he gave his boss a funny look and continued. “I’ve kept your money for you because I knew a day might come when I have to return it.”

“Yes, Danger has said a lot of things and no one would escape the wrath of the law. No one is above the law. I stand on my integrity and I’ll make sure that no one involved with Danger escapes due punishment. “He took his bag and walked out of the room leaving everyone mouth agape.

“Make sure you get everything he has about Danger.” Abraham’s boss was dismissed and their meeting continued.

“Asking him to get all the information from that lawyer is a foolish idea. That will make him aware of all we have done.”

“He is part of us. He is the party’s lawyer and not a stranger. He had been the one doing all our legal works. I’m sure he knows many things about us already.”

“We have him at the back of our palm and he will only do whatever we say.”

“Who should we worry about now, the lawyer or Danger?”

“Or that overzealous SP?”

“I think our major worry would be that lawyer. See the way he was threatening us. Let’s finish him.”

“Youth Leader, handle that.”

They discussed other things before they drew the meeting to a close.
