“Shedrack.”
“Yes ma.” I answered facing the ground with guilt written all over my face.
“Look at me.” She said and quickly signaled mum to come close.
“The holy spirit ministered to me while I was praying that your son had a hand in your daughter’s case.” There’s something he did that we don’t know about….” She uttered.
“Shedrack!” Mum shouted my name while the other lady signaled some person’s to come close. Dad and the others were earnestly crying and trying to wake Esther up.
I remained silent.
I was going to turn to my left when I felt a strong slap on my left cheek. Mrs Jane held mum as she was about planting another one.
“So you kîlled your sister isn’t it?” One of them questioned me from the crowd.
“Please beàting him like a child will not solve this. I’m also a mother and children always do things that gets us upset but it’s the way we handle them that matters. Take it easy on him..” Mrs Jane confronted her.
After so much pressure from mum and the others, I revealed everything, from how I received the leaf from the woman to how I successfully mixed the water in her tea, On hearing everything, mum fainted.
Some were trying to wake Mum. Others were simply crying in front of my sister’s body, Dad’s eyes were welled up with tears.
Some men broke into the woman’s house but they couldn’t find her. They searched everywhere but couldn’t find her.
“This is all my fault.”
“I thought I could fix this. This is my fault..” I kept blaming myself with both hands on my head.
The other men charged down and started beating me with wood and sticks. They beat me until my entire body was covered in wounds. I managed to flee the compound like a mád man.
While I was grasping and running out, I spotted the woman sprinting down to the compound. She was only putting on her tights and her whole body was filled with pods. With the way she was behaving, it appeared that she was màd.
She halted at a spot rolled on the sand for several times before running inside the compound. Some of the men in the compound beat her and chased her until she fled.
After a brief interval, an ambulance arrived, and my sister’s body was loaded inside. Since I knew how badly I would be beaten if I got close, I respected myself by keeping a respectful distance and watching them. Mum and dad also followed them to the hospital.
One of my friend (Lizzy) came out from the compound. She sighted me from a distance, came and sat close to me.
“Shedrack it’s okay..”
“Shedrack stop crying naa please. She’s gone and there’s nothing we can do to bring back the deád. It’s not your fault.” She said sympathetically, wiping off my tears.
“Lizzy this is my fault. I caused everything had it been I listened to my mum things wouldn’t have shattered.” I replied her in tears.
“God has punished her. She did this, She manipulated you. As you can see she’s already màd..”
“But my sister is dèàd!”
“I kîlled her. Lizzy I kîled my sister..” I cried out.
“I know how you feel please. It’s okay. Please just take it easy. Right now your parents are very màd at you. I don’t think they’ll ever allow you to stay in that compound again.”
“I know..”
“So what are you going to do now. Because right now you’re going to cater for yourself. You know my mum won’t allow you either”
“Lizzy don’t worry about me. I’m still a young boy. By next year I should be 23. I’ll look after myself okay..”
“Please take care.” She cried out.
“Okay..” I hugged her and she left.
I searched far, sighted an uncompleted building and rested. Throughout that night I couldn’t sleep, my body itched me throughout. I was awake, crying till the next morning.
When I was ready to leave the building, some security guards ran to meet me, handcuffed me, and carried me to the compound where I received another round of beating.
“Take this idiot away!” Mum and dad thundered as the security men bundled me in their Hilux.
It turned out they had been looking for the entire time. They used that opportunity to grip hold of me and that same day, my neighbor(the wîtch) was found dèad.
They drove me off to the station and threw me in one of their cell.
I was charged with murder after following all procedures. The lawyer altered my sentence from dèàth to life imprisonment when my mother pleaded on my behalf. My mum felt pity on me as they took me away.
I’m still begging my sister to forgive me while I’m still in jail because her ghost is still haunting me.
