The moment Jumoke realized that Kola had left the house without giving her a second glance, she stopped crying. After washing and drying her face, she returned to the kitchen and dished a generous amount of food for herself. Her reason for crying was to evoke pity from Kola and stop him from going out. She wanted attention. But since her antics did not work, she decided to eat and and wait for Kola’s return. As her people would say, the stool will always wait at home for the buttocks to come and sit on it( Ile lapoti njoko de idi).

She finished eating the first portion of food and wanted more. Lately, She’d been having an unusual urge to eat and eat and continue eating. She couldn’t place the reason why her appetite had increased more than before. Maybe the weather. She also gets tired at little exertions. Anyways, she saw no harm in eating to her satisfaction. She only wished that the food would make her add more weight.

Jumoke’s mind went back to her husband. She had wanted him to turn back and come to her when he heard her crying. He must have heard her cry. But instead of turning, he just decided to leave to wherever he was going. If only he had given her the chance, she would have apologized. But Kola didn’t give her the chance to speak. . He only acted like someone she didn’t know. She wondered at where he went. It couldn’t be his office. Kola detested weekend works. He always stayed at home on weekends.

Jumoke had just taken three forkful from the second portion when she began to have a bad feeling; a heaviness in her spirit, as if something bad was about to happen. It was sudden and intense. She quickly chewed the spaghetti in her mouth and stood up. The heaviness in her heart was so much that it made her feel like she was choking. Her husband’s name dropped in her mind. Remembering that they didn’t settle before he left the house, she began to panic. She wondered if something bad was happening to him at that moment and prayed that the enemy wouldn’t use their carelessness to get at them. Jesus please have mercy, she said with her palms jammed together and raised to heaven.

Grabbing her phone, Jumoke hastily dialed Kola’s number. She exhaled loudly on hearing his voice.
” Sweetheart where are you?” She asked in a shaky voice. ” There’s this heaviness that came upon me. I’m worried about your safety. Where are you? What are you doing?”

” I’m fine. I’m fine. I will be with you very soon.”

” Sweetheart. I’m sorry. I love you,” Jumoke said fiercely. ” I’m very sorry. I want you to return home so that we can settle our differences. Please come home. I’m sorry for the wrong accusation. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Kola, I love you…”

” It’s okay. I love you too. We will talk when I return.”

Jumoke heard someone speaking underneath. ” Is that your wife?” The person asked. “Let me speak with her.”

Jumoke’s jaw dropped . She recognized the voice. Kola is with deaconess.

” Mrs. Johnson good morning,” deaconess greeted jovially. ” How are you doing? Thanks for releasing your husband this morning as always. He’s been of tremendous help. I wonder at how I would have gone about this without his help.”

Jumoke ended the call without giving any response. Turning, Deaconess pointed the phone at Kola. ” I couldn’t hear her response. It must be the network.”

” Yes.” Kola nodded. Our network over there is very bad.”

” I see. Please extend my greetings to her.”

Jumoke starred at her phone and felt like smashing it into pieces. So, Deaconess was the engagement that made Kola rush out of the house, abandoning her. He didn’t even wait to have his breakfast. He left his wife because his mistress needed his attention. Jumoke felt like rushing to Deaconess’ house and confronting her. Wouldn’t that be better than dying in silence on daily basis? Instead of that, She would ensure she report them to the pastor when they go to church tomorrow. Enough is enough.

But, she needed to talk to someone. She called Tosin.

” Whatever you plan to do, pray for your husband.” Tosin advised. “Prayer should be your first tool whenever you have a challenge like this. Why not pray for him now? You said you had a bad feeling about him a while ago.”

” Se was gbo?” Jumoke responded. ” I’m so pissed off now. I can’t pray for someone that is not helping prayer.”

” With all our findings,” Kola said and pointed to a section in a document before him. ” It is safe to say that the MD has a hand in the massive fraud at Collins & Sons.”

” Hmmm.” Beatrice sighed.

Kola pointed at some figures. ” Look at this ma.”

Deaconess left where she sat opposite him and moved to sit beside him. She studied what he showed her and remained in that position as they worked. Their hands brushed against each other. Their legs collided in both accidental and intentional moves. Their faces were within hair’s breath of each other. Deaconess’ began to get aroused. The feelings that had earlier subsided returned in a rush. She remembered the dream.

She wanted to move a way. Why not call it a day before her feelings would betray her. But no, she didn’t move. She didn’t even want Kola to leave because she was enjoying the feeling.

If Kola felt anything, he didn’t show it. Though, his face looked flushed. Maybe he could master his feelings as he claimed. But, he had begun to sweat under his shirt, even with the AC on.

Deaconess stood to get something. Kola watched as her backside swung on their own accord. Something stirred within him. His body reacted.

She returned with a glass of juice and handed it to him. Their fingers touched. Their eyes locked. His body reacted more. Kola heard his wife’s voice urging him to ๐‘๐„๐“๐”๐‘๐ ๐‡๐Ž๐Œ๐„. He also heard a silent but clear instruction – ๐…๐‹๐„๐„!

But what excuse would he give deaconess for leaving now when they were almost through with the work? Would he tell her that his body is reacting to her? How would she feel?

There was palpable tension in the air. Both of them knew it, but they pretended as if nothing was amiss. The tension was so tangible that one could almost touch and hold it. They managed to finish what they were doing. Thank God, Kola whispered under his breath. Immediately, he stood up and begged to take his leave. Deaconess smiled and asked him to stay for a while. She had something to discuss with him.

Moving back to the space she had earlier occupied at the start of the work, opposite him, she asked.

” How would you feel if I offer you a job in Collins& Sons.”

” A job? Already, I have a job…you know it ma.”

” Yes I know.” Deaconess crossed her legs. ” What if I offer you the post of the managing director of the company.”

” What?” Kola’s jaw dropped. ” That’s big. Collins and Sons is a large enterprise. To be the managing director is something urge.”

Deaconess was happy that Kola liked the idea. ” Actually, I have made up my mind that you will be our new MD.”

” Jesus.”

” With you as the head of the company, I won’t need to bother myself worrying about how the company is being run. I don’t know but I have so much confidence in you as a person and in your capabilities.” She made the last statement in an emotion laden voice. Kola noticed it.

” As soon as I return and those people are dealt with, you will take your rightful position in my company. You will begin to get the full benefits attached to the position. Infact, I will backdate the salary to the day you started the auditing job.”

” Haa!” Kola exclaimed with his palm across his mouth. ” I don’t know what to say.” At the next instance, he went flat in full prostrate before deaconess.

” Noooo. You don’t need that,” deaconess said. She tried to raise him up. They stood facing each other. Eyes to eyes. Nose to nose. Mouth to mouth. Deaconess’ palms stayed on his shoulder. She looked directly into his eyes. ” Promise you won’t disappoint me.”

” I won’t.” Something was clogging Kola’s throat. He couldn’t speak coherently. His eyes were fixed on Deaconess’ eyes. He saw fire coming out of them. And him, there was fire in his loin. He had never felt like this; not even with his wife. He desperately wanted to be with someone. He felt like he would burst. He should have fled.

They were close; too close. Deaconess pressed herself against him and whispered. ” I can’t control myself. Please help me.”

” This is wrong,” Kola said in a voice that seem not to be his. ” I want to go to…” He could free himself. He could flee, but …he seemed not to want to go. Something was telling him to enjoy the moment but,

He remembered Joseph at the face of temptation. What gave him the strength to escape? The fear of God in his heart. His reverence for God.

Kola seemed not to have any strength now. His claim over the strength of his body had failed. His body had betrayed him.

Deaconess’ fleshy arms were wrapped around Kola. Her head rested on his chest. She had battled and lost. She was ready to give in. Deaconess was at that point where she’d rather choose her bodily pleasure and face whatever lay in store for anyone that choose to break the law of God.

Kola felt trapped like a fly in a spider’s web. He wished to move away but at same time, he wanted to move into deaconess until they become one. His hands that stood limply by his side soon garnered strength and groped her behind.

She moaned in pleasure. Now she’s happy. They are about to reach a point of no return and she’s happy. They are commiting a sin and she’s happy. ” Just this once,” she whispered as they fell to the sofa. ” God will forgive us.”

The moment would soon pass. The cloud of lust would soon lift. Reality would dawn upon them. After the act, the feeling that would come upon deaconess would be a feeling of utter shame. She would grab a wrapper and cover her nakedness. She would equally bury her head under several throw pillows. That would be medicine after death of course, it’s too late to cry when the head is off.

Lust is like a veil that covers the face of the person under it’s influence.

And the bible says…Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.(James 1:15)

I used to term the meaning of death in that passage as just physical death. But no, it carries more meaning. The more you give yourself to immoral acts, the more you die spiritually. Immoral acts give rise to several kind of sins. Sin of course separates man from God.
