I nodded.
“Nice to meet you, Pete”
I was about turning to my front when he quickly asked;
“You major in philosophy, I guess?”
I smiled forcefully and nodded.
“I’m from English Department…”
“Nice” I muttered.
“Huh… Actually, I wanna talk to you. If you don’t mind,, after class,, can we-
“Axel? You are late” I heard Prof. Elliot say.
I quickly turned to see Axel, walking up to the seats. He had a dull look on his face. His face looked pale, his lips were dry, and white. He looked really sick and he seemed to have emaciated.
“What happened to him?” I thought.
Axel didn’t give anyone a glance,, even me. I watched him pass me and sit at the extreme back.
End of Class**
Students started leaving in groups after Prof. Elliot walked out. Lily stood up and tapped me. She noticed I was in thoughts.
“What’s wrong with you?” She asked, when my eyes met with hers.
I forced a smile.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“You seem lost. Anyways, class is over. Let’s grab lunch”
“Uh… Go without me. I wanna check something out first”
“Huh? Okay then… See you later” Lily waved and walked out.
I sighed and turned to see Axel head on the table. He seemed to be sleeping.
“What’s his problem?” I thought, and stood up. I walked to him, checked everywhere and touched his neck by his collar side. He was f*cking sweaty.
“Sh!t,, He’s really running temperature” I almost yelled.
“Axel? Axel?… Wake up” I called.
He slapped my hand off him before looking at me.
“What are you doing?” He asked, coldly.
I stared at his sick, but harsh looking eyes. He wiped his sweat with his hanky and stood up. I couldn’t stop staring at him.
“What has come over you?” I asked.
“Why do you care?” He asked back, before leaving.
I suddenly felt sad, and pitiful. I was hurt… Why?
I looked down, then someone held my hand. I blinked my eyes, and my expression seemed to be changing. I took my eyes up to see… Pete?
“Huh? Pete?” I asked, and took my hand off.
“Here,, I noticed you didn’t go out for lunch” He said, giving me a sandwich and a drink.
“No,, I’m- I paused, when I saw Axel walked in. He seemed to have forgotten his book. I saw it on the table.
He stopped when he saw us. He looked at me, and I gave him a sharp quick glance.
“Thank you, I appreciate” I smiled, at Pete, and took the things from him.
Axel decided to take his leave, not caring if he had his book or not.
“By the way, Pete. What was that you said, you wanted to talk about,, after class?” I asked, quickly.
I saw Axel wait again. This time, he was backing us. I smirked,, cause I expected him to wait.
Pete smiled.
“So, you remembered?”
“Why won’t I?” I chuckled, awkwardly.
“Actually, I was thinking if you could go on a date with me,, this weekend… are you free?” He asked.
I looked at him briefly, and slowly took my eyes to Axel who was still standing.
“Okay then,, I’m gonna go with you,, next week end,, right?”
“Sure! Thank you so much. I’m gonna be expecting you. MB eatery, you know there, right?”
“Yeah, I do”
“I’m gonna wait for you there. Let’s make it 1pm?” He couldn’t stop smiling.
“Sure” I forced a smile.
I looked and later saw Axel leaving.
Week End**
“Where are you off to?” Julie asked.
“A date” I replied, straightforwardly.
“What! Really! With?”
“Pete”
“Pete? Axel’s course mate with the cute smile, and low cut hair. He’s great though,, from what I heard”
“Whatever. I think this is the last date I’m gonna go with him”
“Hey,, what are you talking about?… You haven’t even started..” Julie said.
“Do you think he has a girlfriend?” I asked, taking my black bag to my shoulder.
I wore a dark pink dress, with a lady’s belt around my waist. My shoes were slight edged. I had my long dark hair tied into a pony tail.
“Don’t know. Pete wouldn’t have asked you out if he’s dating” Julie said.
I chuckled and shook my head.
“Why did you chuckle?” She asked.
“You don’t know guys, obviously” I said, and waved her goodbye,, before leaving.
MB Eatery**
I walked in, and looked around.
“Rose, here!” I heard Pete’s voice.
I turned to the direction and saw him, waving with a smile on his face. I chuckled and walked up to him.
“I’m not late, am I?” I asked, and sat down.
“Not really” He chuckled.
“I’m gonna order now. What would you like to take?” He asked.
“Anything… Light meals and non alcoholic drink to be precise” I replied.
“Okay” He winked and signalled to the waiter, who rushed to attend to us.
24 Minutes Later**
As we were eating, discussing and laughing. I felt Pete was the real deal. He was a total vibe. Everything about him was cool and sweet. I even began to contemplate if I should go on a next date with him.
“Is this where you were?” I heard a feminine voice asked, out of the blue.
We both turned around. I saw a girl who wore a red short fitted dress with long heels. She had the most expensive and genuine jewelries worn. Her hair was blonde.
“Who’s she?” I asked, in a mutter,, looking at Pete who stared at her, shockingly.
Pete quickly stood up.
“Vivian,, I can ex-
Vivian slapped him hard.
“You told me you were gonna be with your friends, for a study group,, you liar! It’s over between us” She snapped and walked out.
“F*ck,, No! Vivian! I can explain” He said, and quickly pursued her.
I just sat there, motionless and speechless.
Finally, I scoffed, and dropped the fork down.
“I guess all guys are the same after all”
I wiped my lips with the serviette and stood up. I wore my bag and took a step. Immediately, I did,, my edge on my shoe, did it worst by slipping.
I felt my whole body reacting by going to the ground but fortunately, someone quickly held me by the waist. I looked up, at the person and saw… Axel?
“Happy Val,, Rose” He winked.
