Episode 24
After two days of anxious waiting, i got a very wonderful news from Joe who came into my apartment with excitement written all over his face.
โI saw your woman today and believe me, sheโs very okay. She reported to work like you were expecting and i had to wait and follow her after the school closed for the day. I now know her hideoutโ he poured out with excitement, while i quickly got up and shook his hand.
โyou are the man. So tell me, where is she hiding?โ i asked curiously,
โsomewhere in Ekenwan, sheโs probably staying with a friendโ he answered.
โgood, letโs go there, letโs go right awayโ i shouted, grabbed my car keys and hurried out of my apartment with him.
I couldnโt control my excitement as i drove towards Ekenwan that fateful evening. I was so happy and overly excited.
We soon got to her hideout, a very cool building complex with lots of apartments.
Joe nodded and alighted, i quickly followed him and together we headed into the building, my heart beating furiously. We slowly made our way to the first floor, Joe leading the way and stopping at a door..
โhere is the apartment i saw her enter this afternoonโ he said with a slight nod. I drew forward and knocked on the door without wasting time. I knocked and knocked until a middle aged lady opened up and stared at us with fear.
โwhere is Jenifer?โ i barked,
โi donโt know any Jeniferโ she answered and tried to shut the door, but i was faster than her. I pushed forward, forcing my way into the sitting room and pushing aside the shocked lady in the process.
โget out nowโ she screamed, but i paid no attention to her because i already had caught glimpse of a lady escaping to one of the rooms as i bolted into the apartment.
I went after the lady, barging into the room without civility and freezing as my eyes feel on the fleeing woman. She was no other person than my Jenifer.
โJeniferโ i breathed.
โget outโ she screamed boldly like a terrified Animal.
โJeniferโ i called out her name again, happiness filling my heart and swelling my soulโฆ.

โJenifer you are going home with me this moment. We are going homeโ i said seriously, watching her keenly.
โiโm not going anywhere with you just leaveโ she cried.
โbaby, the past we canโt change, but our future we can shape. Cโmon letโs go homeโ i begged softly, drew close and held her hand.
โno you donโt understand anything. We canโt be happy together. Do you really think you can segregate yourself from your people because of me?. Cโmon your feelings will change in no time. Just leaveโ she cried.
Her friend and Joe barged into the room that same moment, interrupting us.
โyou better leave sirโ her friend said angrily.
โiโm not leaving without herโ i answered defiantly.
โlet me beโ Jenifer begged.
โitโs either you leave with me or i stay here with youโ i replied seriously with a drawn face.
โfine letโs go but this is kidnappingโ she finally murmured with resignation.
โyou canโt be doing thisโ her friend protested while she shrugged.
โdonโt worry dear, thanks for everythingโ she replied, forcing out a smile.
Ten minutes later, we were in my car, speeding back to my house. Joe drove the car, while Jenifer and I sat at the back seat.
โyou were very rude to my friend. Your behaviour was uncalled forโ she complained quietly. I smiled and caressed her palm.
โi had no choice my dear. I was very desperate. Your absence nearly made me madโ i confessed.
โyou donโt understand. Iโm a woman. I have only one life to live. I donโt want to make a mistake of choosing a wrong life partner. I donโt want to spend the rest of my life regretting marrying a wrong person. We are in Africa for Christ sake. Marriage isnโt just only between two people here, but equally between your family and mine. Yours wonโt accept me and the stigma of Tonyโs issue will forever be there to spoil things. Please understandโ she pleaded desperately.
โyou canโt convince me to leave you dear. Yes iโm the bad guy, but i have you to live for. I have only youโ I said seriously, kissing her hand. My phone soon rang, interrupting our discussion.
The caller turned out to be no other person than the same kinsman who paid me a visit somedays back. The same man whose words sent Jenifer fleeing for dear life.
โwe are having a meeting to deliberate on your problems with Tony tomorrow. All the town union members will be there. My house is the venue. Time is 4pmโ he announced, chilling my heart with the information.
I truly wasnโt a strong member of the union but it was something like a family gathering which i had no choice than to respect. I knew they all had ganged up against me to side with Tony whose stand i couldnโt really figure out. He appeared to be playing the victim game with one hand, striking with the other hand and covering everything up like a saint.
โyou see what iโm talking aboutโ Jenifer slowly said as if she listened to my phone conversation or knew what was in my mindโฆ
