AN OVERSEAS HUSBAND
CHAPTER 7
“Who was that guy?”
I finally asked Chika when I could no longer run.
“He’s my boyfriend or rather, was.”
“Why did you leave him?”
“Can’t you see my wedding is in one week?” Chika retorted.
“So you knew but you still kept him.”
“Hmm. You’ll not understand.” Chika heaves and continues. “I was scared this abroad guy will disappoint me na. So I didn’t break up with Chibuzor.”
“So Chibuzor was just like 2-factor authentication na.” I said sarcastically.
“You’ll not understand, Stella.”
“What is there to understand? You were playing with someone’s emotion for your selfish interest. That was bad o.” I replied sounding like the older one as Chika stared at me from head to toe.
“See who’s talking. Don’t worry, you’ll understand in the future.”
We laughed at her words as I reminded her that big mummy was calling her. Big mummy told us that we’ll be going to the market the next day for the final shopping on her wears and that of some of the girls.
We were about leaving for the market the next day when Bird ran after me and asked me to pose for the camera as she took a picture of me.
Her mum, Joanie, also requested to be in the picture with me.
“Green, come let’s take some pictures.” Uncle Emeka’s white wife calls out to her son who vehemently refused.
“I’m play-ing ban-ga with cuz Jerry.” He replies as he runs off with Jerry falling down in the process but standing up quickly and continuing his race after Jeremiah.
You can tell that Green indeed has the blood of his father, uncle Emeka. He had the strong Nigerian blood in him.
Big mummy was laughing at the funny poses I taught aunt Joanie as she said we should hasten up and join her as we left for the market.
Traditional wedding accessories were quite expensive at the market. Probably because of the festive season but the money was there. Chika’s fiancé had sent enough money to cover for the expenses.
On returning from the market, we met some people in our house speaking with big daddy, my daddy and grandma.
Immediately I sighted Chibuzor among the people, my eyes and that of Chika met as Chika quickly ran inside.
There was a knock on the door.
“Aunty Chika, big daddy is calling you.” That was Jeremiah’s voice.
We quickly opened the door and dragged him inside.
“Do you know what they’re talking about?” I asked Jeremiah since I spotted him seating on my mother’s lap among the visitors.
“That uncle said that aunty Chika is pregnant for him.” Jeremiah replied as he runs off.
“What??? Chika? Tell me it’s not true?” I asked staring with unbelieve at my cousin sister who is about to be wedded in a week time to an overseas Husband.
Chika was still silent when big mummy entered and gave her a slap as she dragged her out from the room with her, heading for the big parlour.
