UNMARRIED AT THIRTY
EP 14
Titilayo couldn’t wait further, she dressed up hurriedly and taxied away to Toluwani’s House but met her parents instead. She was disappointed, when she told Toluwani’s mother about their friendship during their school days. She gave her Toluwani’s phone number and she called her immediately. “I’m coming back tomorrow afternoon” Tolu told her over the phone.
It was few minutes past the hour of 5pm, the evening sun was friendly to the body and gentle breeze whispered through forages of leafs. Yinka had recently applied for a loan of five hundred thousand naira from his bank few months ago without a any positive feedback, he had forgotten about the application because he wasn’t confident of the outcome from the onset as he had no tangible collateral though the terms and conditions only demanded for two sureties residing within the state. He had provided those with the help of a friend.
That evening, he was at the Justrite supermarket to get few items when his phone beeped, the email was a congratulatory message from his bank on the approval of his loan application. “Yesssss!!!” Yinka screamed out of excitement and everyone at the supermarket were turned at him surprisingly. People wondered what great news he had received that made him so excited. Yinka walked to the section where bread was, there he met Rosemary, his ex girlfriend. Yinka and rosemary were termed inseparable during their University days. Their relationship gradually without formal announcement metamorphosed into a breakup after Yinka dropped out of the university. Their communication gradually fade out like the light of a candle dying down in an abandoned cave.
“Oh my gawd, Yinka is that you!?” Rosemary said jubilantly as she jumped on his shoulder. Yinka was surprised at who was it but he smiled brightly when he realised it was rosemary. “Hey rose, it has been ages. How have you been?”. Yinka asked as they walked out of the supermarket.
Toluwani and George were done for the day, it was already past 6pm. Their purpose of traveling was achieved with much gains attached. The investors were much satisfied at the Toluwani’s eloquency, and comprehensive delivery of his speech. It was just delightful for a woman to be such insightful, prudent and at the same time confident of herself. The investors showed their appreciate by adding digits to the amount they had agreed to invest.
George have tried to established a discussion outside work and office unsuccessfully several times since morning. He was a little timid, afraid about what the outcome would be but he cheered himself up like a lizard who has got only itself to applaud itself. “Toluwani, this is just 7pm, why don’t we explore Abuja a little more after all we are leaving here tomorrow morning” George asked. Toluwani thought it was not a bad idea too, it was her first time visiting the federal Capital therefore it wouldn’t be bad idea if she spent one or two exploring the beauty of the city.
She changed into a Jean trouser and white Polo top, the taxi took them to a beautiful resort not too far from their guesthouse.
“Welcome to HAPPY DELIGHT RESORTS” the workers greeted as they took their seats. The place was beautifully lit, the thatched huts were nicely decorated and the cool RnB music that played at the background made the place almost a heaven. After eating their foods, George paid the bills though Toluwani wanted them to go Dutch with the bills but George adamantly insisted on paying. “Unless you want everyone to gather us here if not please let me pay” George told her as he handed the bill to the waitress. They walked around the resort watching the beautiful artworks displayed on the walls. “Wooow!! This place is truly beautiful, the calm serene atmosphere and their food taste just as great” Toluwani complemented.
“Toluwani, i have something very important to discuss with you, can you please give me few minutes” George asked as they took a seat at the edge of the resort where few people were scattered around.
Toluwani already had the inclination of what he was likely to say, from the the conversation she overhead the other day, she hoped he didn’t say anything but from the look of things, he was going to say something.
“I’m all ears”.
“Toluwani, for a very long time now before i was posted to your branch, i have adm—-” George was abruptly interrupted by the ringing of Toluwani’s phone.
“Hello Yinka, how are you?” Toluwani asked with visible smile beaming upon her face. The facial expressions of her face the moment she answered the call was suspicious and this irked George to a state of gloominess and emulous.
George’s disposition changed to that of man with nothing but wretchedness. How can her mood lighten up just from answering her gate man’s call in the night. George couldn’t stopped himself from the flood of assumptions causing wreckage to his heart. Was Yinka really a competitor, he thought to himself but that sounded absurd, absolutely insane to his ears. How could he be a competitor with someone who won’t even have the guts to ask Toluwani out.
“Your mother said, she had tried calling you severally without response from you, we were worried about you, that’s why i called” Yinka said. His voice was like a fine wine to the ears of Toluwani. Even though, Yinka said nothing inciting emotional connection between them, Toluwani couldn’t stopped blushing and this made George ireful. “Ma, also i have something very important to tell you when you returned” Yinka told her.
Her heart thumbed faster than usual. Does he likes me, is he going to ask me to be his woman!, Toluwani’s mind ran wild from her own self delusion.
“Sorry about the interruption, I’m listening” Toluwani said but George had lost every excitement and zeal at the moment. He was just like an overused rag that has only trashcan as its home. “Let’s talk about this next time Toluwani, i suddenly feel unwell” George l
