AN OVERSEAS HUSBAND. .
CHAPTER 18
“It’s fine by me. I’ll take my leave now.” He walks towards the door and stops. “Just know that I truly love you and I am not playing games with you.” He leaves and shut the door quietly behind him.
It’s been 2 days and I’m yet to give Collins a reply. I have been praying as my pastor said. The few times we spoke on the phone, he did not raise the topic and I was grateful that he understood that I needed time to process the whole thing. I made sure I avoided to discuss the topic with Chika. Williams on his own part, has not replied my last message.
I have decided to go to the market alone today. Since I returned to the village, I’ve never gone to the market alone. It has always been Chika and I. I got to the woman’s store we normally buy stockfish from but unfortunately, it was her daughter who was there today and her friend, one short looking girl who had a wide open teeth which she must have gotten from a fight.
They were discussing about something and didn’t care that I was there but continued whatever they were talking about.
“I heard that Collins now went for the girl’s sister.”
“Me if I’m the girl, I will not accept oo. It’s somehow now.” The short girl said making gestures with her hands and face.
“I actually see nothing wrong there really. Not as if they had anything like intimate. If I’m the girl, I don’t think this is a reason for me to reject his proposal. I don’t know what’s that girl is doing o.
If I was the one, I will grab this opportunity with both hands. This one na sure ticket to obodo oyibo wey that Chika of a girl miss.” The woman’s daughter finally realizes that a customer has been standing there all along.
I quickly bought the stockfish and left to get fresh fish from another woman when one of the women recognized me. I remember her face. I have seen her twice in church, in my grandma’s Church.
She should be one of the prophetess who had told my grandma that one of her daughters was going to marry someone abroad. This was before we came to the village. Chika had told me about the prophecy the night pregnancy test was confirmed to be positive. Could I be that daughter?
“My daughter. How are you?” She asked.
“I’m fine, ma.”
“You want to buy Fish?” I nod.” How much own?”
“How do you sell them, ma?”
“This one is 600 naira and this one is 900 naira.”
I requested for the one of 900 as she sets out to pack my fish. I was surprised by what she said next.
“When you go over there, don’t forget us oo.”
I tried to act as do I don’t understand what she said by keeping silent but with a smile plastered on my face.
“I knew it. I told your grandmother that one of her daughters we go to obodo oyibo. God is faithful. My dear, I don’t know what you are thinking about this but I feel that this guy has good intentions. Deep down you know it too. He didn’t even ask for a refund after was your cousin did and I know his father and his mother very well. He was properly raised. In fact when I went to their house and saw him, I was surprised that he hasn’t changed. If not that you don’t come back to the village often, you will know Ifeanyi.”
If I haven’t told her that I was the one to cook, she would have went on and on.
“But my daughter, I’m not telling you all this to confuse you. Don’t feel pressured and make the wrong choice. I’ll be praying for you, my daughter.” She ended her sermon. “Greet your parents and grandmother for me.”
I gladly walked home as my pastor’s call enters my phone. “I had a dream last night concerning what you told me. Have you prayed about it?”
“Yes, sir and I had a dream.”
“Share with me.”
“In that dream, sir. . .” I started. “I saw myself struggling to pull out something that looks like a long rope stuck to the ground when he came and joined me and we pulled it out in no time.”
“Hmm. Is that all?” My pastor asked.
“No, sir. I had a second dream and I saw a woman handing a purse to me. I was actually wearing just one shoe in that dream and this same woman gave me the other pair.”
“That’s a confirmation. I had the same dream. Collins was never made for your sister. I pray the Lord lead you.”
“Amen, sir.”
The call ended as I was approaching our house. I saw Jeremiah jumping round, looking happy. Since Green and Bird left the country, he has been moody bit seeing him all happy, someone else was around.
Collins.
“Urmm. . . Hi.” I stammer because I didn’t expect to see him so soon.
“Hello. I learnt you’ll be leaving for Lagos this weekend so I decided to come spend sometime with my little man.” Collins was saying when Jeremiah ran and held Collins legs.
“I have caught you, uncle Collins. My money.”
“No, it’s cheating. Your sister distracted me.” Collins said giving me eye signals to support him.
“Erm. . . Yes. Do it again this last time.” I supported.
“Ok. This is the last last time. No cheating again.” Jeremiah says as he covers his eyes with his palm to allow Collins go hide.
“So, you have been cheating my little brother right?” I asked as he begins to laugh and runs off to hide.
I hurried inside to drop the stuffs I got at the market when mother cornered me.
“When are you giving him an answer?”
I smiled stylishly and told her. . .” Today. .”
