AN OVERSEAS HUSBAND
CHAPTER 12.
“Aunt’s Stella, uncle Williams is on the line. Please open the door.”
“Who’s uncle Williams abi is it Will? The other day she also came here speaking with him on a. .”
“Are you there, aunt Stella?” Bird’s voice came through cutting Chika’s statement.
“He’s her mother’s brother who’s looking for a Nigerian bride.” I whisper to Chika.
“Come in, Bird.” I respond as the door crackles and Bird runs straight to Stella handing the phone over to her.
“Urmm. . . Hi.” I losty tongue as I stare at the handsome white man on the screen.
“Hello, Stella.” He says.
My eyes nearly bulged in surprise but I was quick to hide it. How did he know my name?
“You’re surprised I know your name, right?”
“Yes. . . Yes, I am although I shouldn’t be. Bird can be mischievous at times.” I replied trying not to act nervous.
He gives out a soft laugh displaying his properly arranged 32. Such thick black hairs. I hadn’t noticed the last time; I didn’t really talk with him on the last call.
“I must confess, you’re really pretty and I admire you alot. I love your voice and I love you.”
Chika who has been eavesdropping had to hold her mouth with her hands to prevent it from bursting out in laughter.
“I like your hair. You’re looking good.” I had to compliment him too not knowing what to reply to his words.
“I look forward to getting to know you better. I will like to get your WhatsApp number so that we can talk-and-get to know ourselves-better.”
“Uncle Williams, I’ll be attending my first Nigerian traditional wedding in few dsys.” Bird says peering at the screen interrupting, coming to my rescue because I didn’t know what to say at the time.
“And who’s getting married.” Uncle Williams asks no one in particular.
I thought he was asking Bird so I didn’t respond. Bird thought he was asking me so she kept mute. Only few minutes later did we realise and I replied..
“My cousin. My cousin is getting married.”
“I really love Nigerian weddings. I look forward to having one.”
Bird turns the phone to her face and tells uncle Williams;
“Of course you’ll be having one with aunt Stella. I don’t think Nigerian is bad after all.” Bird looks at me and then at Chika and at me again before she lowers the pitch of her voice but I could make out what she was saying.
“When will you be coming, Uncle Will? I think someone is planning to take aunt Stella away from you.”
“I can’t just come over, darling. Don’t worry. I’ll talk to aunt Stella and everything will be fine.”
“Alright uncle Will. I’ll send you her contact right away. I love you.”
“I love you too my darling.”
Bied turns to me and asks me to punch in my phone number which I did. She quickly ran out of the room.
“Who was that white man?” Chika asks again. “And what are you plotting with Bird?”
“I have told you, it’s her uncle who’s looking for a Nigerian wife.” I replied avoiding eye contact with her.
“Stella, you know I have told Collins about you and he’s now interested in getting to know you.”
“Chika, I’m sorry but I can’t bring myself to get married to who you were supposed to marry.”
“But I’m not angry. I’m not against it. Ok. . .” Chika draws closer to the edge of the bed where I’m seated and draws my eara closer to her mouth. “How about you chat with the both of them, they’ll be sending you dollars and you can finally marry anyone you like.”
I turned sharply and couldn’t believe my ears.
“You want me to play the kind of game you played with Chibuzor and Collins abi?” Chika tries to cover my mouth with her palms because we heard someone at the door.
To be continued. . .
