I remember the first time I came to Lagos.
I had planned with my friend that I’ll spend some days in her house before coming back to Abia. I had a project I was sent to do in Lagos.
We have been communicating before I entered bus that day. Immediately our bus left by 6am at Milverton, I called her to tell her and throughout our journey, I was updating her as we left both through calls and via WhatsApp.
I arrived in Lagos by 9:25pm.
My phone was at 8% and I started calling her to come pick me up as planned but she wasn’t picking up.
I called thrice but no response.
I was getting scared.
Some weird looking guys with red eyes were already staring at me where I stood.
I kept flooding her WhatsApp with messages of my arrival. I tried calling on WhatsApp yet no response.
This was not funny anymore.
I saw some guys walking towards me when a man just held my hand and whispered to me to follow him and laugh.
He didn’t sound threatening so I obliged and he laughed too.
When we got to a distance where we saw so many people he now stopped.
“Don’t you know this is Mile 2 and you don’t stand alone in such places where there are few people. You could have been robbed.” He said to me as he stands waiting for a bus.
“I’m sorry really. This is my first time in Lagos and someone was meant to pick me there but her number is not going through and my phone will go off soon.” I explained to him with fear evidently seated in my eyes and voice.
“What do you plan to do if she doesn’t show up?” He asks.
“I really don’t know. She should have picked or something. She’s not responding on WhatsApp too and I saw her update her status awhile ago.”
“Hmm. How close are you two ”
“We’re quite close. We have been friends from secondary school. I really don’t know what to think right now.” I said really scared of what my fate would be.
“I will not suggest you going home with me because I live alone and I know you’ll be scared to but I have a sister although she’s married but I can plead on your behalf for a night.”
“Thank you so much, sir but you don’t even know me or my name.”
“We just have to be help whenever we can because we can need help tomorrow too. By the way, what’s your name?”
To be continued. . .
