BEHIND THE FINE FACE

FINALÉ
.
“Baby, God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have tried to help Bobby and Rachel, but you have to understand that helping these people to your own detriment is not wise…
.
The rest of that day was spent in each other’s arms. Despite Grace’s assurances that she had pardoned me and my absolute certainty that she had, I couldn’t help but feel terrible.

I saw a spark and a smile that I nearly extinguished every time I looked at a beaming Grace.

Every time Grace performs her customary act of compassion for me, I get this fleeting feeling. It always serves as a reminder of how unappreciative I was, to a point.
.
Every time an act brought on these feelings in me, Grace would simply smile, approach, kiss me, and then leave me with a nice reminder: “I am glad you feel this way, baby. It is what gives me the reassurance that you won’t ever again let the devil take advantage of you in that way. You are a wonderful man, Godwin. A brief misstep in morality cannot be what you are defined by. The key will be in how you go on from this.”
.
That Sunday in church, as though the pastor had set out to throw jabs at me, he went on to preach about things I could have sworn were directly addressing me.

The preacher went on to discuss false prophets and the erroneous prophecies that these prophets provide; prophecies that go on to shatter a lifelong marriage; the union of peace and harmony.

“In your deranged minds, putting your business out there and attracting attention from others who ordinarily shouldn’t be interfering with your affairs is being trendy. When the devil marks you as a result, you start running from pillar to post looking for a miracle.”
.
In my sleep, in a trance, or anywhere else, I never again saw Uncle T.
.
I was unable to independently confirm the claims made by Prophet U.C. Kenneth regarding Aunty Esther, my mysterious birth, or my connection to Rachel’s apparent contagion. Nevertheless, if Aunty Esther is mentioned in a conversation, I now tread carefully.

It will require the grace of God to get me to look past the disturbing picture Prophet U.C. Kenneth built in my mind about Aunty Esther and what she might have done to me out of resentment for my mother, her sister.
.
Regarding my relationship with Rachel and Bobby, it took me some time before I understood that, yes, it is one thing to love and want to improve a man’s living circumstances, but quite another for the forces influencing those circumstances to be willing to allow this transformation to occur.
.
“You might go in for the rescue in some circumstances only to find yourself in more need of this rescue.” Pastor Isaac said. “Never undervalue the power of prayer; ask for heavenly protection from the unknown whenever you want to assist anyone you feel merits it, even if your intentions are modest.”
.
All I can do at this point is pray for Bobby from a distance and wish him the very best of luck in life because I am quite certain that God, in his great mercy, has the power to change Bobby’s circumstances if he so chooses.

Uncle T and Grace’s suggestion appears to be the most sensible course of action because there doesn’t seem to be a prophecy that is reliable enough to cast light on Bobby’s dark path. And because Prophet U.C. Kenneth, a guy we’d considered to be our last hope, has apparently been compromised.

Bobby and Rachel are so much in love that being apart (as I was) is not even a possibility that can be discussed.
.
Two weeks ago, when I was returning from one of my shops, I ran into Bobby. We hadn’t seen each other before now for a long time. It was exhilarating to reconnect with an old friend after a lengthy absence.

Hearing that Bobby and Rachel are doing well and that things are starting to get better made me really happy. “The church has been extremely beneficial.” Bobby said.

Bobby informed me that they now attend Prophet U.C. Kenneth’s church exclusively for worship. He now serves as an usher, and Rachel works at the church’s administrative office.
.
Although Bobby was doing fine, he could definitely be doing better.
.
It’s unclear to me if Rachel has been fully delivered, and I currently believe that it’s none of my business.

The end.
