Episode 8
Doctor Gideon’s Wife 💔
As we both sat, staring at each other, there was a tap at the door and one of the student nurses entered.
” I have delivered it, sir.. She said.
…may I have your card ma’am?”. She requested from Tricia.
She collected the card from her, signed on it and gave it back before leaving the office.
How I wished she could stay back and save me from this.
“Back to business”. Tricia said.
“Tricia, you know that what you’re doing is very wrong. This is an office, for crying out loud”. I said, raising my voice a bit.
“That’s no way to talk to your patient, doc. I’m just like every other patients, be nice to me”
“Please, why did you come here?”. I asked, trying hard to conceal my fear.
“Good. I just want us to talk, doc…tell me, when are you coming to see my people?”.
“Tricia, you know this is not as easy as you think, I still have to talk with my mother and our kinsmen in the village. I…”
“And when are you planning to do that?”. She interrupted.
“That is the problem, that is exactly what I have been trying to let you know, I don’t know when I will get that chance. I…”
She hit her fist hard on the table and before I could say ‘jack’ she stood up, and moved to my side of the table. She held the collar of my shirt with one hand while with the other, she pulled the laptop on the table before me, causing many things on the table to fall noisily to the ground.
“Do you think I’m here to listen to your jokes..abi you wan make I break this laptop for your head?”. She shouted, placing the system above my head.
“Tricia, calm down, please, calm down”. I was breathing so fast.
Just then, the door opened and two nurses ran in.
“What is going on here?”. One of them asked.
“Ask your use!ess doctor”. Tricia replied, not making an attempt to move away from me.
“Please, calm down, ma”. The nurses pleaded with her.
After some times, she moved away and dropped the laptop back on the table. She adjusted her blouse before she pointed two fingers at me
“You see you?, I will be back”. She picked her bag, threw the card at me and started going to the door. She even had to push one of the nurses out of the way before banging the door hard.
The two nurses stared at me suspiciously for a little while before they started picking up the stuff she had scattered.
I knew I had to act fast.
“Which amongst the two of you, gave that lunatic consultation card?”.
They looked at each other in confusion.
“None of us did, she got it from the usual place..the reception” one of them answered
“But you both saw her entering my office without doing anything, what if she had injured me?”. I feigned annoyance.
“But, sir,….”The second nurse wanted to speak but I interrupted her.
“This shouldn’t repeat itself again, just get out”.
I watched them walked out and then, I breathe a sigh of relief.
” That was close”. I muttered
I quickly picked up my phone and called David. It’s been long we spoke, marriage really took so much from me.
“The baddest doctor, ever!”. He hailed over the phone.
“Please, David, this is not the right time for that. Where are you?, we need to talk”.
We met later in the evening at our usual place and after I narrated my ordeals to him, he took pity on me. And that was why I chose him, of all my friends, Kingsley would have started blaming me and at the end, he wouldn’t come up with any solution.
“You really have been passing through a lot, my guy”. He shook his head.
“What do I do now?”. I asked.
“First of all, we need to confirm if that girl is really pregnant, because I know her very well. She is too desperate” He suggested.
“How am I going to do that?, you don’t expect me to drag her to the lab and request for a test. That will arose suspicions and you know, that is exactly what I have been trying to avoid”
“You know what, just leave this matter for me to handle, trust me, she will come around”. He promised
…. but you have to be careful oo, make those girls no kill my guy before his time”…He joked and we laughed over it.
… but seriously that your wife is calm. Do you know that, Shegu’s neighbor that just got married two months ago is now in the hospital and the wife, in cell?. Ask me why”.
“Why?”. I asked, curious.
“His wife caught him cheating and kept quiet. When he came back the next morning, she poured hot oil on him. he said.
I covered my mouth in disbelief.
“Women are ev!l”. I exclaimed.
Before we slept that night, I engaged Sandra in a brief discussion.
” You’re aware that mother will be coming in two days time, right?, I want to warn you beforehand. You know you talk too much, whenever you see anyone, you open your mouth waaaaaa… Sandra, don’t ever say anything about me to my mother, you’re free to say whatever you want, but please, don’t say anything about me. If there’s anything I want her to know, I will tell her myself, I don’t need your help… did I make myself clear?”.
She nodded in affirmation.
I dismissed her with a wave of the hand.
On my way back from work on Tuesday, I drove into a boutique and got her some clothes.
“Put away every old clothes you have, I don’t want to see them anymore”
My mother finally called on Wednesday afternoon that she had arrived.
“I’m in the park now”. She said.
I left office to go pick her up and drove her back at home.
My plan was to drop her at home and go back to the hospital, but I didn’t understand why Sandra was busy sticking around her like glue and giggling up and down. I don’t trust that girl, so I had to stay back home that evening to monitor her.
I knew Desmond will always stand in for me.
Later that night, mother and I were talking in the living room while Sandra was tucking the kid to sleep.
“Obinna, I hope everything is okay between you and your wife?”. She asked.
“Yes, we are fine, why did you ask?”. I demanded to know.
“Because, she looked so withdrawn. She looked like someone in distressed, are you sure you’re not doing anything bad to her?”. She asked again, looking at me, suspiciously.
“Mum, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Sandra and I are doing absolutely fine”.
“You know I will still find out what the problem is?, you know me now”. She threatened.
I was scared but refused to show it.
Once we were alone in the room much later, I rang it into her ear one last time.
“Don’t tell mother anything about me or how we have been living”.
Gogoo has been calling me all week but I didn’t have time for her. So after work on Friday, I decided to make it up to her.
I picked her up from the house and as we were heading towards the direction of the hotel, she held the steering, indicating me to stop.
I pulled over.
“What did you do that for?”. I asked, surprised.
“Where exactly are we going to?, hotel again?”. She asked.
“Yes, of course. Where else?”.
“Take me to your house”. She said
My heart beat increased….
