LIFE IMPRISONMENT 24
WRITTEN BY: GRACE OLAYEMI
Abraham sat confidently in the cabin as he awaited the arrival of Danger. He had studied his case file and had known enough about him already. He knew as Danger’s lawyer, he could not escape meeting with him and having discussions with him. Initially he was terrified and his heart palpitated at the thought of sitting in close proximity with Danger. But, ever since he had prayed, untold boldness had taken over him.
Danger was ushered into the room and the officer asked Abraham if it was okay to lose his handcuffs and Abraham nodded in the affirmative. Danger sat noisily on the chair and rested his hand against his chin while giving Abraham a cursory look.
“Are you the award-winning barrister that would defend me or his P.A?” He asked with disgust laden in his voice and evident on his face.
The question sent cold water down Abraham’s spine and he just stared in disbelief. Should he be surprised that a man that can ruthlessly kill people also had a sword in his mouth? He removed his spectacles and stared back at Danger.
“I’m Abraham and I would be representing you legally as you proceed to court to receive the judgement for all you have done,” Abraham said with a stern, coarse voice and even extended his hand for a handshake.
Danger scoffed and ignored the gesture.
“Can I meet you?” Abraham asked and he looked at Danger with expectation of receiving a response.
“You said you are going to represent me in the court and also make me receive the judgement for all I’ve done. Are you truly a lawyer? Or is that what lawyers are for? Aren’t you supposed to be here telling me of how you would make sure that no hair on my head fall.”
“Lawyers are to uphold justice and see to it that no sinner goes unpunished.”
“You are definitely incompetent. I can’t trust you at all.”
Silence rented the air after that and it took a while before Abraham spoke again.
“I want you to please co-operate with me. I would be asking you some questions and I want you to answer me with the truth and nothing but the truth.” He waited for Danger’s reply but when it was not forthcoming, he continued.
“The record here states that your legal name is Oluwarantimi Adel, is that true?”
Danger remained mute and didn’t mind Abraham’s slight tapping on the table. Abraham was fed up with the case already as he had not foreseen Danger’s arrogance.
“Are you guilty of all the crimes leveled against you here?”
After reading the case file, he had seen that there were a lot of things about him that was still hidden. There were no concrete evidence against him and his confession to his crimes was greatly needed to prosecute him.
He had always operated with a mask on and there was no time that his face was caught. All the guys that were supposed to stand in the court as witnesses had been reported dead.
In fact, his being caught was a mystery that he could not unravel and that was how he got to know that acquitting Danger would be so easy. But that would lead to an uproar in the city as everyone knew about the case; and were well informed that Danger was behind most of the atrocities committed in the city and even in the country.
He continued to ask Danger various questions but Danger kept quiet and maintained a straight face. He continued with that until Abraham got tired and took his leave. Danger laughed to himself as he was being led back to his cell.
Abraham immediately reported the situation of things to his boss, who gave him the case. He stated that he would drop the case if Danger continued to prove difficult. His boss pacified him and promised that he would look into it and make sure Danger cooperates.
Abraham knew without doubt that there were influential people in the society supporting Danger and they were also the ones that had contacted his boss to see to it that Danger escapes the consequence of his actions. He wanted Danger to confess so that the hand of the law would catch up with them.
