Life imprisonment Episode 19

LIFE IMPRISONMENT 19

WRITTEN BY: GRACE OLAYEMI

That night was the longest for Danger and he rolled from one corner to the other until bright light invaded the dark cell they were kept in. He was told that he had a call and was led to the counter where the phone was.

“Listen, it’s me Chief Morris. We have tried all we could to get you bail but the CSP has refused saying that the matter was beyond him and that the federal government are interested in your case. We even asked if we could pay a price to get you out of the mess and allow another person play the role of Danger but he said no. Stating that he was a child of God and would not pervert justice. I didn’t know when he became a fanatic, he was not even a church-going christian before.”

“Back to what I was saying, the chances of getting you out anytime soon has become slimmer. The only option we are looking at now is to get you the best lawyer in the country that would plead your case. The public have been involved and the Federal Government also. Please, Danger, these are the most powerful people in Nigeria and you know the elections are coming soon please, don’t mention our names or your involvement with the party.”

“We will pay you one billion Naira,” he said and Danger sighed. He was about to oppose but when he heard that money he mellowed down and took the offer. There was nothing bad in spending a few days in the cell as long as he would have that money once he got released. He knew he could not trust anyone, especially Nigerian politicians and t,hat was why he had kept many evidences to prove that he was working for most of them.

Interrogations began in earnest and Mr Emmanuel with his assistant and other detectives spearheaded the sections. They compared statements and asked many questions that would make them have concrete evidence for the prosecuting counsel.

The guys were not cooperating at all. They disclosed personal information about themselves but they could not mention the names of other people involved with them, where their hideout was and many other details that had to do with the gang.

They were tortured and threatened but they remained hardened. Until they were brought face to face with Piercing Jack. They were eager to confess all their crimes but whenever they opened their mouths, they coughed to death. It continued like that until the last guy died. Danger had fun mocking them all through the process.

Mr Emmanuel was on the field confirming the personal information given by Danger’s guys that were arrested such as their legal name, family ties, and others. He was able to confirm the authenticity of their claims and even visited their family houses to inform whoever he found there that their children had been arrested as Danger’s boys and most of the family members refused to believe stating that their brother or son or uncle or cousin was away abroad studying or doing business.

He came back to the station to discover the latest development and he was sad at the loss. He informed the CSP immediately and told him that it seemed that the guys had a covenant of secrecy and that was why they died whenever they made an attempt to sell Danger out.

He remembered that he was told something like that in the dream he had about Danger and regretted his lack of patience to remember the dream. He was so eager to catch Danger that he didn’t pay attention to the other things he forgot.

Danger on the other hand had refused to say a word. He even refused to tell them his name and though Mr Emmanuel knew his name, he didn’t confirm or refute it. He had faced the Piercing Jack twice and was jagging for breath the second time before he was released and allowed to recuperate.

“The man is stubborn like the Devil himself,” Mr Emmanuel commented.
