Philomena’s parents were finally laid to rest. She and her younger siblings were taken to their maternal grandmother who took care of them in the village.
Two years later, Philomena was ready to write her senior certificate examinations but her grandmother was unable to raise the complete amount for the registration. Philomena had to give up her secondary school certificate so her younger ones can continue schooling instead. She started working on people’s farm lands to keep her younger ones in school. Sometimes she does laundry for them.
One day she went to do laundry for a madam Flora. A middle aged woman who drove the latest car and lived in a well furnished mansion in the village. She was a clear definition of a woman with class.
When Madam Flora met with Philomena, she wondered why a young girl of her age was at home doing laundry and cleaning work while her mates were in school. She didn’t say a word to her on the first day. She just paid her off.
One fateful day while Madam Flora was driving, she came across Philomena who was returning home from clearing someone’s farmland. Madam Flora stopped her car and whined down the glass of her car window.
She offered to drive Philomena back home. But Philomena insisted that she was fine with trekking back home. After much persuasion, she agreed to hop into madam Flora’s car.
When they finally got to Philomena’s house, her grandmother who saw madam Flora dropping her grandchild off, insisted that madam Flora joined them for launch. From that day, Madam Flora became a family friend. She dropped by from time to time to check up on them and sometimes supported them in her own little way. She paid for Philomena’s secondary school certificate examinations which she wrote and came out with flying colors.
Few months later, Madam Flora decided to go back to the city where she works. Philomena then pleaded with her. Telling her how much she would love to secure any good paying job that is suitable for someone with secondary school certificate. So she would be able to raise money to sponsor her sisters through school. Madam Flora was reluctant at first but after much pleas, she agreed to take Philomena with her to the city.
When Philomena got to the city, she was shocked to realize that madam Flora was into prostitution and human trafficking business.
