THE EVIL BRIDESMAID
CHAPTER SEVEN
“There’s a spirit,” he pointed at one of the cowries, “who is very angry and has vowed to destroy your sister, and not even death could save her.”
“How…” Before Willy could cut in, he continued, “I see friends, I see love, and I see betrayal. It’s all a mystery which I can’t explain… but until the truth comes to light, unless there’s a cleansing and appeasing of the spirit, no one is safe. She’s ready to devour your souls, right down to your future generations. The spirit’s anger has reached its apex.”
“But I don’t have any idea who wronged my sister.”
“Ask her friends.”
“What friends?”
“Three are gone already. Two more left, and your generation is next. Any relative of yours will meet the same fate. So be…”
“Please tell me…”
“I am only an interpreter, a dream interpreter, not a native doctor. Be warned.”
We left there confused because we had no idea where to start. While in the car, I asked Willy if his sister had any friends.
He said when he was in secondary school, he had always seen his sister, Lisa, with some girls whom he wasn’t acquainted with and never bothered to find out. I asked if he maybe remembered even one of them, and he refused.
Willy’s friend asked about Miranda, and then everything came back to me. I forgot Miranda was, in fact, a friend to both Lisa and Ella, who had died on their wedding days. Miranda also mentioned to me that there was another friend who had died before Ella and Lisa, making it three deaths. This tied exactly with the interpretation of the dream interpreter.
Gosh! Why didn’t I think of her? She’s probably the only person we could get this information from. No wonder Mr. Leo, the drunk, sang a very horrifying song about the Evil Bridesmaid being angry with Miranda and coming to take her.
Immediately, I asked Willy’s friend to take us to Mr. Bichong’s compound.
When we got there, the sun and daylight had retired. There was no one at Mr. Bichong’s compound. I proposed that we all go and eat something at my place while waiting for them to return.
After waiting for an hour, no one came. I decided I was going to ask Linda. I asked the guys to excuse me and then went out. I knocked on the door, and Linda’s 12-year-old boy came and opened the door.
“Derrick! Wow! Someone is back from school.”
“Hello, Aunty Trisha!” he rushed and hugged me.
“How was school, my boy?”
“It’s been okay, Auntie. How have you been?” he asked, smiling.
“Been great, my child. Look at you! You’ve become so skinny. Is this what boarding school does to children nowadays?”
“It’s food shortage, Mum, and the little we have, our seniors seize from us.”
“Oh, that’s so bad. I hope your mum spoke to your school authorities about it. When you’re resuming, I will personally stock your trunk with enough food, okay?”
“Okay, Auntie Trish, you’re just the best.”
“Where is your mom?” Before I could finish asking, his mum answered,
“Here I am. I thought I was not invited to your conversation,” she said while we burst out laughing.
“Derrick is something else,” she said.
“He went to boarding school with everything and came back with nothing,” she continued.
“It’s well, my sister. Intelligent children like him are the reason that keeps us going.”
“Anyway, I came back since 6:30, haven’t seen Miranda nor Mr. Bichong.”
“Miranda, you say!” She exclaimed in a terrific manner.
“What happened? I haven’t…”
“She had a miscarriage and was rushed to the hospital.”
“Jesus!” I exclaimed. “How? What happened?”
“Heard she was running from someone and then she fell.”
I went home and told Willy and his friend. Since it was already late, they decided they would spend the night at my place.
