“THE BOY WHO CHEATED DEATH”

Episode 5

It was upon this scene that Daniella walked in accompanied by a police officer.

“Daniella,” they both cried out and embraced her.

“We found her wondering on the street, she missed her way while trying to get to the hospital. A good Samaritan found her yesternight and took her to a nearby station.”

While the police officer was talking to her parents Danniela saw her twin brother on the bed and walked toward him. The hospital staff were still trying to check the equipment.

“Daniel, I know you can hear me, you can’t die and leave me behind. You have to come back to me.” After saying this she broke down and started crying. The parents held her and the three of them cried together it was an emotional moment, some of the hospital staff couldn’t help sharing tears.

Mrs Etuk approached the doctors, “I want you to put him back on the life support machine.”

“Mrs Etuk, I told you it’s pointless.”

“Do it, or I will sue this hospital for negligence.”

The doctor and nurses exchanged glances and decided to oblige her. They re-connected him to a new life support device. There was no signal at but as the doctor was about stepping out of the room he heard a peep, Daniel was breathing, albeit faintly, but he was breathing; the medical team were shocked.

“This is unbelievable”, the doctor said after checking him and discovering that his heart was beating normally.

They carried out some on-the-spot checks and found he wasn’t responding to stimuli but was breathing.

“I’m not sure what to make of this; his heart is beating steadily, but his body isn’t responding.”

“It makes no difference; our son will not die but live.”

“I just don’t want you getting your hope up only for you to be disappointed. I will be in my office if you need me, excuse me,” the doctor said as he walked away with his team.

“Glory to God, hallelujah! This sign is what we’ve been looking for, Uduak.” Mr Etuk said

Mrs Etuk beams with happiness as she says, “Yes.”

The three of them approached their Daniel’s bed, grateful that he was breathing again. They immediately began praising God.

When Daniel was still in a coma a week later, the Etuks requested for another CT scan. The doctors confirmed what they had already suspected when the result came in.

“The MRI scan came back today, and we discovered that part of Daniel’s brain is functioning again, not completely, but something is happening; we will conduct another test in a few days.”

“What could this possibly mean?” Mr Etuk asked.

“I can’t explain what is happening but I will say this, whatever you guys are doing, keep doing it; it appears to be working. I’ll catch up with you both later.”

“Thank you, doctor” He nodded and left.

Several days later, it was late at night, and Mrs Etuk was sleeping on the couch, Daniella has returned to her aunt’s place. Mr Etuk stood by the window, restless and unable to sleep, the room was in darkness except for the glow from the bedside lamp. He was walking back into the room when he heard a sound and turned around to check on his wife, only to collide with Daniel’s eyes.

“Daniel, Daniel, you are awake!” He dashed to his side, touching him and thanking God. “Wake up, honey; Daniel is awake.” When Mrs Etuk saw Ben with Daniel, she rushed over to join them. “Oh my God, my baby is awake.” Ben made space for her so she could be closer to him. Daniel removed the mask and the three of them hugged, crying and praising God. “Oh God, thank you, thank you, Lord Jesus, you are truly a God of possibilities; nothing is too difficult for you. Thank you for honouring our faith and reuniting us with Daniel; we will continue to serve you.”

It was an emotional time for them as they saw their faith produce results. Mr Etuk moved out of the embrace and rang for the nurse. “Great is your faithfulness, oh God, great is your love. Thank you, Lord Jesus; you are amazing, gracious and kind.” Mrs Etuk continued to praise God dancing around the room. The nurse was shocked to see Daniel sitting up “I will get the doctor,” she said as she left and returned almost immediately with the doctor.

The doctors examined Daniel, who appeared to be in good health.

“How are you, Daniel?” he inquired.

“I am fine,” he replied, his voice croaked from lack of use.

“Do you have any headaches?”

“No sir,” he replied.

“Any dizziness?”

“No sir.”

The doctor examined him further and requested another MRI scan to ensure his brain was functioning correctly.

While waiting for the MRI, word of Daniel’s miraculous healing spread throughout the hospital, and people from the hospital, both staff and other patients, were flocking to see him. Dubbed “the boy who cheated death,” it was a first for them to see someone who had been declared brain dead come back to life. When the brethren heard the news, they rejoiced and thanked God profusely; there was resounding praise to God everywhere.

It wasn’t until later in the day that Daniel could go for the scan, and when the results came in, he was fine. The doctor and consultant approached the Etuks.

“What unwavering faith you have in God’s power to heal your son. I’ve never seen anything like it in all my years as a surgeon.” The consultant said.

“Yes, what happened to your son was medically impossible. I now understand what Mrs Etuk meant when she said it was not impossible for her God. Congratulations to you both. Perhaps, Mr Etuk, you wouldn’t mind telling me about Jesus sometimes.”

“I would love to,” Mr Etuk replied.

“Congratulations then, there’s no reason to keep you guys here any longer; we’ll go and prepare his release paper,” said the consultant.

“Thank you, doctors,” Mr Etuk said, joining his wife and son in a group hug and praising God.

The end!
