CHAPTER FOURTEEN
“Mum! Mum!” Margaret screamed, as her mum began to twist and turn on the bed , her lungs were pumping less air , she was struggling to hold on to life , the veins on her body became more visible.
Her nose expanded as she struggled to breath,the heart monitor bang to beep at a very fast rate .
“peep peep peep Peep!” it rang , Margaret clutched her baby to her chest as she ran to the nurse station .
“Nurse please I need a doctor I don’t understand my mother !” She said amidst crying .
“Madam calm your mother is going to be okay , meanwhile let me call the a doctor .” The nurse ran towards the emergency centre, many accident victims were being attended to there , by most of the doctors in the hospital.
“Doctor Shade, there’s a problem with the patient at VIP room twelve .” Doctor Shade got up from the patient she was attending to a leg bruise .
“Ephraim take over , there’s an emergency.” She said as she began to run after the nurse .
“put back the oxygen mask! she’s having a cardiac arrest .” Two more doctors joined doctor Shade .
“Doctor Chima her blood pressure is dropping drastically, and her heartbeat is irregular.” Mrs Grace was stretching on the bed , her skin had gone white , she was fighting to stay alive, but her chest contracted , the Cats were in the room pressing her chest . she was fighting to throw them off .
Their terrifying faces boring down at hers , made her heart labour too hard .
“Her heart beat is dropping too fast doctor Festus please pass over electric shock chest compressor . Somebody please move Mrs Margaret away from here .” A nurse followed the instructions and led Margaret away .
“I want to be with my mother !” Margaret said crying .
“No Maggie it’s not best for you and the baby , just stay here , you’re not helping us standing there , be here praying unto God for your mother .” she turned back and ran towards the VIP section.
“God my mother shouldn’t die! please I’m sorry for being a disobedient child , I promise I’ll never disobey her again, I put her in this situation!” Maggie cried . “God be merciful I beg you .”
The heart monitor had gone low , reading zero . with a scissors Grace’s hospital robe was cut from chest down .
“Stand clear !” Doctor Shade called ,as the electric shock compressor was connected to the light .she put the machine on Grace’s chest , she exhaled deeply , raised up her chest and lay back on the bed. she made a raspy sound from her throat .
“I’ll repeat , stand clear!” She said to the other doctors as she put the device on her chest again , her body stretched and her chest rose up and she lay back .
Doctor Shade shook her head in disappointment.
“Time of death Nine thirty A.M , patient had a cardiac arrest, at about nine A.M .” Doctor Shade covered Grace’s corpse , as tears rolled down her eyes , she remembered the time they shared together , though it was short it was deep, she felt like a failure .
Jacob had come into the hospital, with food he had prepared for his wife and her mother . When he met Margaret crying he collected the baby from her and consoled her , she relaxed on his massive chest , Jacob was a very huge man .
Just seeing Doctor Shade coming , they both knew the news she was bringing.
“No-no-No doctor don’t tell me my mother is dead !” Margaret quivered , her legs became weak under her she began to shake . doctor Shade walked up to she and Jacob , the words were too heavy for her to say .
“I am sorry .” Was all she could say as hot streams of tears flowed from her eyes .
“No mummy ! no now mummy ! am sorry mummy !” Margaret cried as she ran towards her mothers room . she embraced her mother’s corpse and refused to get up .
“Mummy please come back , I need you here “she cried ” You cannot leave me now my best friend mummy please!” Margaret cried mucus membranes flowed freely from her nose like river Niger .
At the house of Afolabi the coven members from Lagos watched the last minutes of Grace as she suffered in the hospital on a big flat screen TV, while Titi and Nike were personally there in the hospital, to cause her pain and terror that resulted in her death .
“Yes we’ve gotten the obstacle out of our way , now we can clear that s t u p i d daughter and son, she was disturbing us with her prayers , Afolabi get us more bottles of champagne I’ll replace them ,two times !” Afonja said.
Grace was walking a a long white road , she got to a big city , she could hear the sound of singing and rejoicing from afar off .
she saw the most handsome men she had ever seen , wearing a white long robe .
“Hey where am I ? and where is that beautiful singing coming from ?” She asked the one the men .
“Oh you’re at the pearly gates of heaven, You died .” He said to Grace in a calm voice .
“Oh it’s a relief to leave that defile world and it’s trouble , I want to join those who are singing .” Grace begged , but the angel smiled .
“No, you cannot come in your work is not her done on earth !” He said with a smile.
“I don’t want to go back to the earth ,please let me go to rest .” She begged with tears in her eyes , the city she saw was not one , anyone would want to go away from for any reason .
she saw angels flying with wings so wide , the gate was shining so bright like gold burning in the fire , she didn’t want to leave .
“See for yourself .” the angel said as Grace saw her daughter crying on her body , Jacob was trying to console her but she wouldn’t let him , the nurse aides came to roll her body to the mortuary but Maggie won’t let them .
“Mummy who will console me ? mum who would love me ? mummy who wouldn’t judge me when I take the wrong step? oh mummy I need you , please don’t leave me now ! mummy please come back to me !” Tears fell from her eyes .
“See here .” The angel played another video . She watched as Afonja and his cohorts rejoiced over her death .
“Afolabi do you know the prayer of that woman had been what was protecting that Maggie girl , I had her pinned to the ground I don’t know what sharp pain hit my chest I had to run for my life now , that she’s gone , that baby is going to be taken to the coven , I can see our Lord Shaukura face to face again and take my place at his right hand .” Afonja drank , Nike and Titi appeared .
“Oh my dear wife you have done well come let us rejoice together.” Afonja said . “Tomorrow child and mother shall join their grandmother.” they all broke into a menacing and sardonic laughter , rancorously screaming at the top of their Voices for joy of conquest.
