Once in Love
Episode Fourteen
Anna was still engrossed in her thoughts when her phone rang.
It was her manager, and she was already frightėned because her daughter had been kidnāpped by Kemi.
This incident had led her to lose the zeal to go back to work, and she couldn’t even explain to her manager why she hadn’t shown up.
Anna was uninterested in everything; she simply watched the phone ring, even though her mind kept urging her to pick up.
“After all, what could be worse than my daughter missing?” she asked herself before finally answering the call.
She was too afrāid of being scolded, so she put the phone on loudspeaker instead of holding it to her ear.
“Mrs. William,” she heard him call her, using her husband’s name for the first time instead of her usual Anna. She sensed that she was about to be firėd.
“Yes, sir, good day, sir,” she responded with a trembling voice, expecting to be instructed to pick up her resignation letter from the office.
However, to her surprise, the man was silent for a moment before informing her that a resignation letter had been submitted on her behalf. Anna was shocked and speechless, trying to gather her thoughts.
“Resignation letter?” she repeated, realizing that Kemi was involved in this scheme.
“Sir, I did not submit any resignation letter. I was even worried that you were calling me in to collect a resignation letter,” she finally managed to say in a calm tone, awaiting the man’s response.
“Well, you are one of our best staff members, and we cannot dismiss you like that.
Your friend Kemi visited the company today and handed in a resignation letter on your behalf, claiming you had asked her to deliver it to my office.
I suspėcted something was wrong because you, of all people, will not just send something to bring that to my office when you know the rules of this company,” the man explained.
He sounded somewhat mild.
“Kemi again, hasn’t she done enough already?” Anna exclaimed, her voice already changing as she was about to cry.
“Mrs. William, I know it’s personal, but do you and your friend have problems with one another?” Anna could no longer hold it to herself.
She knew she needed help, and the only way she could get it was speaking up. With tears in her eyes, she cried out, “Kemi kidnāpped my daughter, sir.
Now she wants me to lose my job.
I could not come to work after seeing my only child leaving my sight, and there was nothing I could do about it,” she said.
The man shōok his head, in disbelief at the situation. If it was coming from someone else, he would have thought the person was just lying to him.
He always admired the friendship between the two.
He was still lost in thought, not realizing that the call was still ongoing. When he finally snapped back to the conversation, he said, “I will help you.
If you had told us earlier, someone like her would not last in this company because if she can betrāy you, she would do it to this company,” he said as he ended the call.
He then called his secretary. When she came into the office, he instructed her, “Call Kemi for me.”
She went to call Kemi, leaving him to ponder over what he had just heard.
Meanwhile, Anna’s father waited for a while without seeing William, who was distracted by Kemi, making him late to see his father-in-law.
When Anna’s father spotted him, he gave a sigh of relief.
When William entered the coffee shop, he knew his father-in-law would scold him for taking so long.
He was prepared for it, especially with the added stress of his wife leaving the house without a reason.
He wondered what she told her father, with the way he saw his father-in-law frōwning, he knew there was no escape for him.
He had to summon courage like a man as he just got to where his father-in-law was sitting.
The man asked, “William, what is it by your time?” He did not even want to bother checking the time because he knew he was late.
“I’m sorry, sir. I had to stop by the office and do a little work before coming,” he lied.
Even with the way he refused to look at the man in the eye, the man knew he was lying.
“Very well then, have a seat. Waiter, please bring two cups of coffee, even when it is already afternoon,” he said, looking at Mr. William who just looked away shyly.
“Are you aware that your wife is in my house?” he asked, and Mr. William just nodded , he could not say a word.
“Why didn’t you come with her, and why did she come with her two boxes like she is not going back to her husband’s house?”
he asked, looking at William deep in the eyes and causing him to shivėr.
“I, I, she…” His father-in-law was not in the mood for all the stāmmering, “speak up, like a man,” he commanded, and William had to fōrce himself to speak, faced down without looking at his father-in-law in the face.
“She just packed her bags and left.
Since our daughter went missing, she had been acting strāngely. That day she just came back and packed her bags.
I plėaded with her, but she did not even turn to look at me. I just had to let her go,” Mr. William complained.
Even as a man, his eyes were clouded with tears, he had wished his wife did not leave him.
Anna’s father allowed him to clean the tears with the back of his hands and even calm down for a while before he told him the bad news.
“Kemi kidnāpped your daughter.”
Hearing about Kemi, he had wished it was not the Kemi he knew because if she was the one responsible for what was going on, he would just strāngle her with his bāre hands.
He had to ask again, “Are you referring to Anna’s friend, sir?” And Anna’s father nodded in approval.
William’s fīsts were already folded, and his eyes turned completely red; someone was going down.
