MY SURGER DADDY AND I
CHAPTER TEN
In my family, no one knew we were dating, but his family knew about us. I sometimes come and help his nice whenever she came around. At a certain point I was scared she was going to judge me for dating her uncle but her mum and others didnât judge me at all. They all accepted me and acted so kind and considerate whenever I came and met them at Mr Atabongâs house.
After that incident with my father I decided to grow up and move on with my life. I left the hate and all the bitterness behind. I told my brother I wasnât going to work for him anymore and that I was going to get something to do with my life. I also told him that I will be moving out of the house to start a life on my own. At first he didnât want to accept but with little encouragement from his wife he allowed me. Joseph had long travelled abroad with my father and so I was the only sibling in the house which made me Their prey.
Ever since I turned Henry down my brother became suspicious of me and he started questioning my movement.
My brother would often call Mary and ask her about my relationship and if she had any idea if I was dating any man.
I was Left with just three months in the house. I was also working now. Since I had dropped out of the university I decided to take interest in Fashion Designing.
I was designing bags earrings hair scarfs hills and sometimes design dresses with Ankara fabric. The business had become a lucrative Business and I was making a lot of money out of it.
Hillary had become obsessed with finding out about whom I was dating and he wasnât giving up anytime soon.Sometimes I will catch him trying to open my phone. Other times he will send his little daughter to come take my phone to take pictures just so he would have access to the information on my phone. I noticed that and I decided to add more security to my WhatsApp and other apps that he could access my information. One day he asked
âWhat exactly are you hiding in that phone Bright?”
âWhat do you mean?â
âAre you planning on being single for the rest of your life?”
âDo you even have plans of settling down ever??â
âYes I will. But only when am ready. I donât want to get married and remained a burdenâ
âThat reminds me. Henry told me you had cut him off because you had someone already. Why havenât you introduce this someone to us?â
â Ohh! He said that??â
â Mmm⊠yes I told him so. I will definitely introduce him to you not worryâ
I donât know what had happened to my brother because he just couldnât have grown so obsessed with finding out about whom I was dating, without getting info from outside about my relationship with the Prof. I decided to fine out who might have been feeding him with so much information and I couldnât get anyone. But I quickly remembered that Mary was the only one who knew about my relationship with the Prof and so she definitely has something to do with it.
I decided to visit her one fateful evening and pretended as if my brother had caught me. I told her my brother said it was her who informed him about my relationship with Prof I was shocked by her confession. As I reached her door I feigned sadness while knocking on her door
âWhoâs there?â she asked.
âBrightâ I answered
She walked to the door and opened the door
âHey Brightâ she said looking so tired
âHiâ
âWhat happened to youâ
âwow Mary now you pretend like you donât know?â
âWhat are you talking about. Know what?â
âWow sheâs still acting up. So this is how you choose to betray Maryâ
I could already read guilt all over her face as she continued to pretend.
âWell my brother already knowsâ I said as feigned tears rolled down my chicks
âEhh! â she exclaimed
âHow?? . Who told him? When?â
â Well thatâs the question I have been asking myself. Youâre the only one who knows about my activities with the Prof. You are the only one who knows I recently accepted his proposal and now your asking me who told himâ
She break down crying
âI am sorry Bright. Youâre my Best friend and I canât just watch you destroy your life this way.â
â Your brother knows everything except that you had accepted Mr Atabongâs marriage Proposalâ
â He came here once and begged me to tell him who you were dating and I told him about you and Mr Atabong. I only told him to try talking you out of it and to help you find someone reasonable.â
âThat was why he decided to pair you and Henry at his wedding. I am sorryâ
âBright!!!â
I was speechless and couldnât believe my own friend had betray me for that long.
I went home and acted as if nothing had happened. I decided to play his game till I move out. I had also informed them that I will be moving out early enough.
I cut down my three months to one month.
One fateful evening I had come back from work, had taken a shower I was resting on my bed when I heard someone shouting outside.
â Whereâs that Bright? Is this how she wants to disgrace me?It is over my death body that you will get married to that old manâ he cursed
âWhere the hell is she?. Why has this girl decided to kill me before my time?â he said turning to his wife who had probably never seen him this angry
âCalm down sweetheart. Canât we just seat down and talk to her like an adult â
âTalk to who?. Bright? I am tired of talking to her alreadyâ
âWhere is she?. Bright !! He shouted.
âSheâs in her room.â
I knew I was probably in a very big problem now and no one will probably save me from this one. I didnât want to run from him because I was no longer a child anymore but I soon regretted not running as he came and dragged me to the parlor.
He called all our elderly uncleâs and aunt who came. Everyone gave me Their own side of advice telling me all sorts of things.
âI am tired of your trouble Bright why canât you reason?â my brother continued.
âTake that phone now and call him and call of the engagementâ one of my Uncles said
I was already crying. Not because I was scared of my family, but because they were the ones blocking my happiness.
In as much as I would have loved to obey my fathers and mothers, I wasnât Ready to cut ties with Mr Atabong.
They spoke and spoke and finally gave up. They concluded that since I wasnât going to listen to them they would not partake in the activities and will sever all ties with me that very day.
I never spoke back I just simply stayed quiet. I wasnât going to allow my family control my life. I was the one spending the rest of my life with the old man for God sake. Besides in the past girls were being married off to old men by Thier parents. And Thier relationships ended great. It was my life and I couldnât let them influence my decision especially when It concerned marriage.
