It’s been a month after the encounter I had with Ade. He came to my work place one time; he is friends with Ayo, a fellow apprentice, I discovered. Then it dawned on me how he got to know about me. He visits often with the excuse of seeing Ayo but ends up staying long just to chat with me. He started patronizing our brand, to Mr Hassan pleasure, as Ade would pay without haggling price. I know all this was to impress me.
At some point I fell for him, he would bring some goodies for me when coming, with sweet notes attached to it. I felt different from the way he treats me.
At some point, he started walking me home but I insisted he stops few blocks away from our house to avoid mother finding out😩.
We became close and I got carried away by his sweet words and compliment. No wonder my classmates smile discussing about their lovers. This feeling is undescribable🙈🤎.
I always looked forward to seeing him, and sometimes when he doesn’t show up my day becomes gloomy. I was getting attached to this guy; why won’t I? He speaks to me calmly and sweetly🥰.
After I told him what I have been through, he swore to love and cherish me – I believed. I didn’t hesitate when he asked I become his girlfriend, I gladly accepted.
Mother noticed the glow on my face each time I go out for work, I never knew it was obvious till one day I mistakenly burnt her dress one morning, I didn’t know the pressing iron developed faults.
” You witch! They have sent you abi?😠😠 You burnt my expensive London suit. I see how you are giggling each morning to work. Ha! You know visit men that you can’t wait to be in arms that you had to burn my dress. I will teach you a lesson”
” I didn’t know, the iron is malfunctioning ma”
” Will you keep shut, you slut?”
She beat the living day light of me.
” Do you know how much this is worth? You worthless animal. You have no use in this house foolish girl. Harlot”
As usual the verbal attack kept pouring, but I was surprised I didn’t cry and she too was. I have developed a tough skin to her insults. Feeling pained by my I difference, she started hurling insults on the day she conceived me, calling me unprintable names yet I didn’t cry. I stood watching her and by the time she was done; I was ready to cry but I held back.
One time she came home with a stranger, a handsome dark man. She told me to fix jollof rice chicken, which I did. While I was serving them, he asked who I was and to my bewilderment mother claim I am her niece whose parents are no more. I stood there for almost five minutes, my brain still processing what she said.
” Ruth, your meal tastes nice “. he said smiling.☺️
” Thanks”
Mother’s relationship is really waxing strong, Reuben has made her really happy. I truly don’t know where their relationship is headed for, but I was happy for her and wished to be loved like that. She no longer has time to vent her anger nor what my father did to her on me. At least I now have some peace of mind, the heaviness on my heart is clearing off.
Ade has not been coming for some time to come see me, the last time we spoke was almost two weeks. He is been on my neck for me to come know his place. Not that I don’t want to but time is not really at my disposal to go visit him. I can’t afford to go see him after work hours because mother would suspect and invariably stop me from learning. He loves me, makes me feel special; the least I could do is to reciprocate, so I made up my mind to go see him. I asked Ayo, his friend for directions, Ayo smiled when he learned I was planning on visiting Ade.
One Friday, we had less work to do, we closed a bit early. I decided to go see Ade. I got to the place I was directed to by Ade. It was four streets away, behind our work place. I got to the rusty black gate as described and knocked.
” Who be that” someone yelled from inside
” It’s Ruth, Ade’s friend. I’m here to see him” I replied
The gateman I presumed open the gate, scanned me
” Him dey expect you ni”🙄😏
” Hmm. No I just..”
” Paul, let her in” Ade shouted from the balcony of their flat.
He moved away from the gate, I walked passed him, smiling at a surprised Ade. He was starring at him as though he was trying to confirm if it truly me. He came downstairs, ran towards me, hugged and pecked me. I felt odd though but I smiled through it.
” Ruth! You are truly here”
” Yes”
” I am so elated to have you. I prayed you did come, and final here you are. You didn’t want me to come visit you and you refused visiting me as well. So, I thought to let you be hoping you would come”
” Really! So, you purposely avoided come seeing me” I said while feigning to be angry
” Yes. It worked”
He held my hands and lead me upstairs to the second floor. We got into the lavished furnished apartment. The living room reeks money, from the expensive white and black center rug, to the black leather sofas.
” Wow! Your place is beautiful”
” Thanks. But not as beautiful as you, Ruth”
He held my hands, as he said those words, I felt butterfly in my stomach. Ade has a sweet tongue, I blush with the way he speaks and looking at him is almost impossible, his charming eyes does wonders to me. Fate has brought this handsome chap my way. I was grateful and felt on top of the world. I was lost in thoughts, I no longer hear Ade speak, my thoughts were louder
” Ruth!! Are you ok?” He said while looking at me inquisitively
” I was taken aback by the beauty of your house”
” LoL. Thanks. Actually, it’s my uncle’s. He travelled to the UK for his Masters a year ago, so I stay alone. He comes back once in while though.”
” That’s nice”
” I can take you round if you don’t mind”
” Sure”
He took me around, it was a three bedroom flat. Offered me yoghurt and chin chin when we got to the kitchen; then we got back to living room.
” You can have the remote. You women have your own channels, Zee world”
“LoL. What’s yours?”
” Lol. I don’t watch those stuff, so annoying”
I laughed, picked up the remote; I browse through the channels and finally settled for a African Magic
” You see. This is the kind of channels you watch
” You watch football and what?”
” Latest trending movies too. Action thrilled movies”
” Good for you”
” I am truly happy to have you around, Ruth”.
He drew close to me, held my hands lightly and started caressed my hands. I shifted a little, picked some chin chin up and pour into my mouth. He smiled at my action but I cared less.
” Ruth, you know I love you😩”.
” I do”
” Then show me”
“How else?”
” Give me your body”
“What? ” I asked with a frown. I thought he loves me🥺.
” I won’t disappoint you, Ruth”
I was speechless to say the least, I didn’t know what to make of the situation
” Ade, I should be on my way now. It’s getting late”
” But you just arrived not quite long ehn.”
” I know, I just came to see you ”
” And you are about leaving”
I should be biko, before something happens. I stated I want to leave.
” Ruth think about this. Proof to me, you love me”
I left to my place before mother returns. I don’t want any suspicion. On my way home, Ade’s words kept lingering. I think that’s what my classmates discussed about that makes them giggled each time they share their escapede with their boyfriend.
