A LIFE APART
EPISODE 3
WRITTEN BY RUKEVWE MERRY

Mirabel breathed heavily, trying to calm down. She had run away from the police without thinking. Now, hiding in a quiet alley, she thought about what just happened.

“Someone looks exactly like me?” Mirabel wondered.

The police officer’s words stuck in her mind: “You’re my sister.”

Mirabel’s eyes narrowed, feeling suspicious and curious.

“Why didn’t my parents tell me about a twin or sister?” she thought.

Many questions filled Mirabel’s mind:

Who is this woman?
Why do we look alike?
Why did she call me her sister?

Mirabel decided to get answers.

“I need to ask my parents,” she thought.

Mirabel rushed home, changed her dress, and jumped into her car. She was still reeling from the encounter with her identical stranger.

Unknown to Mirabel, Dennis and his father were on their way to visit Christabel’s parents. Their mission was to ask for Christabel’s hand in marriage.

As fate would have it, Mirabel’s reckless driving intersected with Dennis’s journey. Losing control, Mirabel’s car crashed into Dennis’s vehicle.

Dennis’s face turned beet red with anger. He leapt out of the car, furious.

“Who does this?!” Dennis bellowed, striding towards Mirabel’s car. “You just damaged our car and now you’re going to…”.

Mirabel rolled down her window, revealing a haughty expression.

“Take this,” Mirabel said, tossing a wad of cash onto the ground. “Fix your precious car.”

Dennis’s anger boiled over.

“Who do you think you are?!” Dennis shouted, his voice echoing through the streets. “You think money solves everything?!”.

Mirabel smirked, unfazed.

“Watch where you’re going next time,” Mirabel said, before putting her car in reverse.

Dennis’s face darkened.

“M@nnerless girl!” Dennis yelled, as Mirabel sped away, leaving him fuming.

Mirabel sped away after hitting Dennis’s car.
Dennis’s father climbed out, shouting, “Hey! Stop!”
But Mirabel’s car vanished into the distance.
Dennis’s father returned to their car, shaking his head.

“Didn’t get a good look at her face,” he muttered to Dennis.

“I saw her clearly,” Dennis said, frustration etched on his face.

His father patted his shoulder.

“Let’s focus on getting the car fixed.”

“Let it go, son. We’ll fix the car.”

Dennis and his father went to the mechanic, while Mirabel arrived at her abducted parents’, the Smiths’, house, her stylish entrance contrasting with the tension within her.

“What brings you here?” Mr. Smith snapped.

“We didn’t expect you,” Mrs. Smith added, her tone cold.

Mirabel stood firm.

“I want answers. Am I a twin? Are you my real parents?”

The Smiths exchanged uneasy glances.

“Leave!” Mr. Smith barked.

Mirabel’s anger flared. She pulled out her gùñ.

“Tell me!” she demanded.

Mrs. Smith screamed.

“Mirabel, what’s the meaning of this?”

The Smiths were terrified, backing away from Mirabel.

Mirabel’s eyes blazed.

“Because of your inhuman behavior, I got involved with this gûñ.”

Mr. Smith cowered.

“Okay, okay! You have a sister. We abducted you alone.”

Mirabel’s eyes widened.

“So, I’m not your real child?”
Mr. Smith cowered.
“We abducted you… Your real parents came looking for you years ago.”
Mirabel’s voice trembled.
“You made me sûffer all these years? Where are my real parents?”
Mrs. Smith hesitated.
“We only know the orphanage… We’ll give you the address.
Mirabel’s anger boiled over.

“Give me the address.”

The Smiths surrendered the information, relieved.

Mirabel smiled, triumphant.

“I’m glad you’re not my real family. No one would wish for parents like you two.”

Mirabel lowered her gûñ.

“If I weren’t concerned about avoiding bl**dshed, you’d be sorry you ever abducted me.”

The Smiths trembled.

Mirabel turned to leave.

“I’ll find my real parents. You’ll never see me again.”

Mirabel headed to her car and sped away, leaving the Smiths shaken.

Dennis and his father arrived at Christabel’s parents’ grand mansion, warmly welcomed by the friendly couple.

Christabel’s father beamed.

“Old friend! It’s been ages!”

Dennis’s father chuckled.

“Too long! I’ve missed you.”

The two men caught up on old times, reminiscing about their past adventures.

After a while, Dennis’s father cleared his throat.

“Let me introduce my son, Dennis. He’s a successful lawyer, just returned from canada.”

Christabel’s parents smiled.

“Welcome, Dennis.”

Dennis’s father continued.

“I’ve come to inquire about a potential union between our families. I think Christabel and Dennis would make a great couple.”

Christabel’s parents exchanged delighted glances.

“We’d be honored.

Christabel’s mother called out.

“Christabel, dear, come downstairs. Our guests have arrived.”

As Christabel descended the stairs, Dennis’s eyes widened in shock.

“This… this is the m@nnerless girl who hit us with her car!” Dennis exclaimed.

Christabel’s eyes widened.

“Hit you with my car? I can’t even drive!”

Dennis pointed accusingly.

“Don’t l!e! You’re the same girl!”

Christabel’s face reddened.

“I’m telling the truth! I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The argument escalated until Christabel’s father intervened.

“Stop! Christabel hasn’t left the house today. She can’t drive. Why accuse our daughter?”

Dennis’s father frowned.

“I agree. Christabel is very respectful. She worked in my chambers since she returned back to the country. That’s why I recommended her to my son.”

Dennis looked confused.

“But… but I saw her!”

Christabel’s mother stood up.

“Dennis, you must be mistaken.”

Dennis’s father patted his son’s shoulder.

“Son, let’s focus on the union. We can discuss this later.”

But Dennis’s mind whirled with questions.

Was it really Christabel?
