Episode 7 final
Jailed at 39 ๐ข
My sister was happy to have me around. She had been alone since after the death of her husband two years back and her children were all in school.
But from the first night I spent in that house, to the last, I never had peace. It had been horrible. Anytime I tried to close my eyes to sleep, the last scene before the death of those children kept flashing in my memory. And this keeps me awake all night.
On the second week of my arrival, 17 of August, precisely, my sister threw a surprise party to celebrate my 39th birthday.
It has been long since I last celebrated my birthday. In my quest for vengeance, I had forgotten my birth date entirely. infact, it was the sticker attached to the cake that made me realize that I’m already 39.
“So I will be forty next year?. I muttered to myself, smiling bitterly.
The only guests at the party were three of her colleagues and one young man she didn’t get the chance to introduce to me.
The celebration was interupted by a bang at the entrance door. My heart skipped.
“Who could be banging on my door like that?”. My sister quarried while going to answer it.
From where I sat I could see two men on police uniform standing by the door as it was opened.
My heart beat increased.
Have they found out? how did they do that?. I was asking myself.
“We’re from Uyo… Police command, we’re looking for one miss Funmi”. I heard one of them announced.
“That’s my younger sister, what did she do?”. I heard my sister asked
“May we come in?”. They demanded.
But my sister was not ready to leave the door.
“You haven’t told me why you seek my sister”. She maintained.
At this point, I walked up and stood behind her.
“I’m Funmi, any problems?”. I asked, trying my best to appear calm.
“You’re under arrest for the murder of mr Gregory Wilson’s 3 children”.
“Murder ke?, my sister?, no, officers, my sister is not a murderer, she is my younger sister, she cannot even hurt a fly…”. That was my sister.
” I don’t understand what you people are talking about, who is mr Gregory?”.I asked, looking so innocent.
“When we get to the station you will know, handcuff her”. The officer commanded and the other two struggled a while with my sister before they were able to get to me. I was handcuffed and led away. I looked back as the van was driving away and saw my sister wailing helplessly sorounded by our guests who were muttering somethings to her.
Immediately we got to the station, I looked back and saw my sister’s car drove in behind us. She had come to defend her only sister.
We were led to the hall where a tape was played on a desktop before us. It was a footage of me in the kitchen, adding that substance to the bowl of custard behind Ruth.
That moment was captured so clearly. I never knew there was a CCTV camera in Greg’s house. And they had tracked my location using my mobile number.
Oh! I messed up.
My sister stared at me, a disappointed look on her face.
“They say she be the man ex oo”. One of the officers was telling the others.
“And so?, na only you dey be person ex?”. One of them asked me.
I just bent my head with tears running freely down my cheeks.
My sister tried to talk to them but no one was ready to hear anything from her.
I was later transferred back to Port hacourt headquarters. Greg, Dami and Lola were already waiting before our arrival.
Dami ran out and gave me two heavy slaps as soon as I stepped down from the black Maria.
“So it was you?, after everything I did for you, this is how you have decided to pay me back?. She cried.
“I am sorry”. I managed to say before I was pushed away by the female officers.
“You will rot in jail!”. I heard Dami’s voice, cursing from behind.
I was led towards Greg and Lola. Greg didn’t utter a word to me. We just stared at each other until I passed. It was Lola that tried to come closer but was blocked by the officers.
“Wicked soul!”. I heard her mutter.
That was how I found myself here. I have been locked up for 3 years now without trials. No lawyer agreed to take up my case after hearing my side of the story. They all believe I deserve to rot in jail. No members of my family are allowed to come see me and to add to my injury, the spirit of those kids have been tormenting my life.I hardly sleep at night.
I can’t close my eyes for five minutes without seeing them standing beside me with blood oozing out from their mouth and nose.
I would had ended it all before now, but the warders here are extra vigilant and there’s nothing sharp around my cell. Only God knows how much longer I still have to stay here.
Oh! how I regret my actions๐ญ๐ญ
