Episode 16
“he died accidentally from me” my mother bursted into tears, I was really dumbfounded and Inquisitive so I asked her to tell me how it happened “When I had saw your car, outside, I had thought your father’s family had brought police men from city to arrest me, After you had left the house, I woke up to see Frank, trying to apply some traditional ointment to his elbow with a deep cut, I asked what happened to him and he said after I slept, you came to the room with a knife trying to stab me, then he woke up,struggled the knife with him and you stabbed him at the elbow, I couldn’t doubt it because I know how much you hated me, Frank and I started living peacefully.
At least no one to hinder us, then after few months he changed towards me completely, he started from drinking to stupor, coming home late and bringing in different ladies to the house, this was Frank I have waited all my life to be with.He even sold your father’s land that we inherited. I got crazy because all these were looking like dreams, He has turned me to a punching bag and will hit me at the slightest thing. There is no one to talk to, people will mock me, Then I remembered how loving your father was, when Frank Sold the land behind me and I asked for at least little money to start up a business, he cursed me and even beat me up saying it is his brother’s property and I have no right, I remembered how your father had established me and most of my business money have always been spent on Frank, that is why I have no profit in any business and got ruined. I was losing my mind because this is not the Frank that promised me heaven on earth before your father’s death and even after your father’s death. Frank became my worst nightmare.He would sometimes locked me in the room for a day without eating, tied me down and whipped me mercilessly, accusing me of killing his cousin.
This went on over and over again, he doesn’t show empathy on me. I started regretting I threw my family away on the platter of gold. Your father will never treat me this way. He is the reason I had hated my family and will still put all the blames on me. Frank would starve me and must not see me work or even go anywhere. He will leave this words down anytime going out “Ajoke, I want you to know that you can’t kill me the way you had killed your husband” I will cry over this words because in one way or the other, my husband died because of what he saw, but we did it together, If he feels I killed him then we both did.
Then one day, he had come home, sat me down and began “Ajoke, since you had decided to be a barren and not give me a child, I have found solution to my childlessness, i have gotten this blessed woman pregnant and I will be bringing her home tomorrow.Pack all your belongings to another room because my new wife and I will occupy the main room, don’t think you can kill my wife and I the way you killed your husband or chase my wife away as you have chased your daughter away”
This got me furious and I started cursing him, he stood up to hit me but I accidentally pushed him to the wall.He hit his head on the wall and fell, blood gushing from his nose and one part of his head, I shook him and he was not moving,I don’t know what to do I screamed and i went to call my neighbors, they all rushed to our house, checked him and confirmed him dead, I don’t know what to do and before I know it, family members has gathered and carried his corpse
After few days, all the housewives in the family members came to our compound all wearing the other side of the cloth called “Aso Odi”, it is a strange thing in Yoruba as it expressed anger, mourning with sticks in their hands, they all beat me to the family house, beating and calling me a bad omen which two husbands has died on and killed their sons, when I got to the family house, they told me that it is their family tradition that since Two men from the same family had married me and they both died before old age while still their wife I will undergo some Family Tradition “Oro idile”, immediately, the threw this cloth on me to me to wear, and then the eldest wife in the family shaved all my hair and leave me bald, that was not enough, they made me sleep with Frank’s dead body for 21 days and then fed me with his corpse water for that 21 days, it was hell for me and it got scarier everyday in the room with his corpse, I just got back from the family house three days ago, I have been sick since the day I was with the corpse, the youngest man in the family had promised to come with police to arrest me,that was why when I saw your car I thought it was the police”
My mother completed and I felt pity for all that had happened to her, but she deserves it,
