Ex-boyfriend Episode Five
Chima did not know how to react when Kele walked into the room and saw him on Linda’s bed. He was so embarrassed and he felt as if the earth should open up and swallow him and the bed. He felt so uncomfortable and he wanted to stand up and run, Linda tapped him gently to calm down. She wanted to be the one to speak after seeing how agitated Chima was.
“Welcome! Are you back from work?” Linda asked Kele who came out from the bedroom and sank in one of the sofas in the living room. Linda followed him as he did not respond.
“Why are you not talking to me?” Linda asked. She had left Chima in the bedroom as she wanted to handle the situation alone. Kele was visibly angry but he was trying to suppress his anger so as not to appear insensitive to Linda’s sickness. Besides, he does not know who Chima was and he did not want to wrongly accuse Linda of cheating.
“Why are you keeping mute? I’m greeting you and you are not responding. Why?” Linda asked Kele.
“I’m sorry, I’m just tired. Work was very hectic today. That’s why I’m just trying to rest.” Kele said. He was just controlling himself not to say what was in his mind. He was just applying a lot of self control because his mind skipped immediately he saw Chima in Linda’s bed.
“Be sincere! Are you angry? Say the truth! This one you are behaving like this, is it because you saw another man in my bed?” Linda asked with a sarcastic smile on her face. She knew Kele was not happy over what he saw.
“I’m not angry, but I just want to know who the man is. Is he your boyfriend? Who is he and what is he doing in your bed? I have to ask because you told me I’m the only man in your life. I have never had any reason to suspect that you are cheating on me. But these days, you seem to forget that we are about to get married. Also, you are seemed disinterested in the wedding plans. It is as if another thing has taken over your mind. What is going on and who is that man in your bed?” Kele asked. He was no longer able to control his anger.
“He is my friend at work. We have been friends for a long time. I can call him my bestie. He did not see me at work, and that’s why he came around to check on me. He was just about leaving when you entered. We are not lovers, I swear it.” Linda said. She knew she just delivered another set of lies. In her heart, she wondered how long she would keep on lying to Kele.
“Your bestie? What is your bestie doing in your bed? There are chairs here in the living room, but it is in your bed that he prefers to stay. He was even wearing only singlet and boxers. I sincerely don’t believe you. If you catch another woman in my room and I tell you the lady is my bestie, would you believe me? Will you feel good about it? Find a better lie and tell me.” Kele said.
“I just told you he is my bestie. Why are you not believing me? Are you saying I’m cheating on you? Are you suspecting me of cheating? You know you are the only man I love. I can never cheat on you.” Linda said.
“Well, I have no evidence to prove that you are cheating on me. I’m just saying it is not good that you have another man in your bed when it is just a few days to our wedding. I just want us to go back to the way we were. I don’t know what it is but it seems like something has changed in you.” Kele said.
“Rest assured that I’m not cheating on you. Our marriage will still hold. I’m not leaving you for any other man. I have your ring on my finger and I’m not about to remove it. I love you and I will marry you.” Linda said. Kele stood and hugged her and then left the room.
“How are you able to profess love to me and also profess to Kele? Don’t you think you are playing double standards? How long are you going to be doing this?” Chima asked Linda when she came back into the bedroom.
“As long as possible. I told you I don’t love him. You are the one I love. I don’t want to marry him.” Linda said.
“Then why not let him know? Tell him you don’t love him and that you wish to call off the wedding. He will not kill you. Instead of telling him endless lies and making things to be more complicated. I’m not comfortable with this at all.” Chima said.
“Let me ask you, if I leave him, will you marry me immediately? I will only leave him on the condition that you will marry me. I can’t lose him when you have not even made up your mind to put a ring on my finger. So, are you ready to marry me now? Just say yes and I will go to his house in the morning and call off the wedding.” Linda’s voice was very clear and her intention well-spoken.
“I can’t marry you until I find a job.” Chima replied.
“Then I can’t leave him until you find a job and pay my bride price. I will continue to tell lies and buy time until you are ready to take me to the altar. If in the end you fail me, I will marry him. I don’t want to put all my eggs in one basket.” Linda said.
