30 Days in The Brothel Episode Ten

Ndu stood in the cell with his eyes fixed on Kate who sat on the floor as if he was mourning a dead relative. Her face drenched by tears. The air was heavy with tension, and the silence between them was deafening. Ndu had asked Kate some questions but she has failed to answer. He decided to repeat the questions just in case she didn’t hear him the first time. He was impatient and eager to know why his own wife would turn against him.

“Why, Kate? Why did you do it? Did you leave the house on your own, or were you kidnapped? I need to know the truth,” Ndu demanded, his voice was clearly heavy under the weight of his emotions. He was losing his mind.

Kate looked up at him with her eyes filled with guilt and regret. She knew it was her last chance to explain herself. “Ndu, I… I left on my own,” she admitted. Her voice was so low and weak that Ndu could barely hear her.

Ndu’s heart was shattered into tiny shards like a broken bottle. He had held onto a sliver of hope that maybe, just maybe, she had been forced into this situation. But her confession shattered that hope. “Why? Why would you do this to us? To me?” he asked. His voice was filled with anguish.

Kate delayed for a moment before speaking again with her voice trembling. “I wanted to cheat on you, Ndu. Just like you cheated on me.” Ndu was shocked when he heard his wife talk about cheating.
“What are you talking about? I never cheated on you!” Ndu said.

Kate’s tears flowed freely as she continued. “Yes, you did! I came back from work one day and saw you in our matrimonial bed with another woman. I was devastated, Ndu. I felt betrayed and humiliated. That was why I went to the brothel. I wanted to hurt you the way you hurt me. I wanted men to sleep with me so you would feel the pain I felt.” Kate said tearfully.

Ndu’s heart was beating with speed as he tried to process her words. “Kate, I have no idea what you’re talking about. I have never cheated on you. Never!” He said, but Kate shook her head, refusing to believe him.

“I saw you, Ndu! I saw you with my own ‘koro koro’ eyes!” Kate said. Ndu’s checked his head to know if he may have cheated and forgot but he found no such thing in his brain. But he soon remembered what his wife was referring to as cheating.

“Kate, the woman you saw… that was my mother. She had come to visit us, and she was feeling unwell. I let her rest in our bed while I helped to massage her kneel. You must have come in at that moment.” Ndu said. Kate was shocked to hear that. Her face turned pale. “Your… your mother?” she stammered, her voice barely audible.

Ndu nodded, his heart breaking for her. “Yes, Kate. It was my mother. I would never cheat on you. I love you.”

Kate’s world came crashing down around her. The realization that she had destroyed her marriage over a misunderstanding was too much to bear. She collapsed to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably. “I’m so sorry, Ndu. I’m so sorry,” she cried.
Ndu knelt beside her, his own tears streaming down his face. “Kate, why didn’t you talk to me? Why didn’t you ask me about it?”

Kate shook her head, unable to find the words to explain her actions. “I was hurt and angry. I wasn’t thinking clearly. I just wanted to hurt you the way I thought you had hurt me.” She said.

Ndu sighed deeply. His heart was heavy with sorrow. “Kate, you’ve destroyed everything we had. I don’t know if I can ever forgive you for this.” Ndu lamented. Kate looked up at him, her eyes filled with hot tears.

“Please, Ndu, give me another chance. I’ll do anything to make it right. I love you.” She pleaded but it was clear to her that it was too late. Ndu stood up. Looking at his face, one would see an angry man who had been betrayed by a wife he loves. He was done with the marriage. There was nothing anyone would do to rescue it.

“I loved you too, Kate. But you betrayed me in the worst way possible. I can’t just forget that.” Ndu said again.
As Ndu turned to leave, Kate’s sobs grew louder. “Ndu, please! Don’t leave me!”
But Ndu didn’t look back. He walked out of the cell, his heart shattered into a million pieces. As he stepped out of the police station, he felt a sense of finality. His marriage was over, and there was no going back.
Meanwhile, Kate was left alone in the cell. Her mind was filled with regret and despair. She had lost everything. She lost her husband, her freedom, and her future. She had played a dangerous game, and now she was paying the price. She fell terrible sick.
