VALENTINE’S CITY
CHAPTER FOUR
Indeed, I slept like a baby that night. I didn’t let what Mike told me to bother me. I got up in the morning did my laundry and made breakfast and eat. Mike had already gone to school. I arranged my things and prepared to go out later in the afternoon.
I had only two things that day to do, create myself a Bank account and then get myself registered in school. I decided I Will relax a little before my time reached. I watched movies to pass out time. At about 11: am, Mike returned back home. He advised that I should go early because most banks close as early as 4:pm and most at times there are queue.
I hurriedly prepared my things and took off. He gave me the directions and told me what to say. French was the spoken language in the town though it wasn’t difficult to meet people from English speaking origins.
I hopped out of our room and fastened my footsteps in the corridor. I wasn’t ready to meet Keren yet. I didn’t judge her by the way, but I just didn’t have the time to chitchat.
When I approached the stairs to start descending, I jumped faster skipping two stairs at a time. When I was on the Second floor, I saw a lady in red and heels rushing towards the gate. From the way her two feets raced, one could deduced that she was late. No matter how fast she was I eventually caught up with her and even bypass her.
I crossed the road and waited for a taxi to come. While waiting, I managed to get a better view of the lady in question and discover that she was the same lady I met when I came there for the first time. She equally walked and Crossed the road and stood by.
“HI” She said
“ Hi” I responded.
“You is the new guy, n’est- ce pas? She asked struggling to Speak as if she was mumbling
“Yes. Yes, I am the new guy.”
“ You speak maybe French?”
“ Nahhhh. It’s actually my first time here.”
“ Okay, but you learn french noh?” She looked at me with her dreamy and beautiful eyes.
“ I teach you French and you teach me English hah?” She asked, and gave out a warm smile.
“ Yeah, sure. Why not?” I responded, returning the smile.
“ Oh!! Quel est votre nom ?” looking at me. “ ton nom noh, You’re name?
“ Oh! Oh! I William. I am sorry I didn’t understand. I am called Williams, but my friends call me Welly”
“ Okay, Moi c’est Samira.”
“ Nice to meet you Samira”
“ Same here Welly.”
We had just finished talking when a yango taxi she had ordered, dropped In front of us. She offered to help me which of Couse I accepted. I wasn’t ready to stand there for hours struggling to pronounce places that no one was understanding.
While in the car she informed the driver that after dropping her at the hotel she was going to he should drop me at the WCB bank. When she dropped I thanked her.
From the windscreen of the car, I could see so many beautiful glass buildings. Unlike My quarter where Valentine’s city is located, everywhere was filled with big buildings and Beautiful shops, malls. It was populated and crowded with people and cars. The traffic was terrible to the extent I took about two hours before reaching the bank.
Mike was right all along, the population in the Bank was discouraging. It was month end and people were now rushing in and out. When I had arrived, they were on a break and so I waited in line just like others. At about 3: 30pm I was done. I took a taxi back home because I knew by the time I reached school there be no administration to register me.
Government people never joke with Their time. Once it was closing time, no matter what you do, they’re done for that day. You come back the next day.
I arrived home and went straight to bath in order to relief myself off the heat I felt.
When I was done, I joined my Brother, who was playing a game. 30, minutes later, we heard a girl shouting from downstairs.
“ You want to kill me, kill me today Larry.”
We heard a lot of feet stamping on our roof as if someone was struggling.
“ Some people are fighting, Mike.”
“ And so?, What do you want to do about it.”
I looked at my brother in dismay
“Ehe, What do you want to do about it?”
“ Why’s that Bro, Women are not to be beaten, but spoken to”
We continued talking as the fight persisted.
“ Have you ever heard that saying that a problem between man and woman, no put your mouth?”
“ Try it and see what happens to you the next
day.”
