Troubled Marriage
Episode 2

Frank couldn’t stop thinking about Emily after the night of the party. Her carefree attitude, and the way she seemed to light up the room had left an indelible impression on him. He knew he had to see her again. A few days later, with his heart racing, he mustered the courage to send her a text.

“Hey, it’s Frank. From the party. Would you like to hang out sometimes?”

To his relief, Emily responded almost immediately. “Hey, Frank! I’d love to. How about this Saturday?”

Their first date turned into another, and then another. Each time they met, Frank found himself more captivated by her. Emily was everything he had been longing for. As weeks turned into months, their relationship grew into something deeper. Frank had never felt so sure about anything in his life.

One afternoon, as they walked hand-in-hand through a park, Frank felt a sudden surge of emotion. “Emily, I’ve never met anyone like you. I know it might seem fast, but I’m serious about us. I want to build a life together.”

Emily looked up at him, her eyes softening.

Frank nodded, but in his heart, he knew what he wanted. He wanted to marry Emily, to start the family he had always dreamed of. A few weeks later, he decided it was time to tell his mother about his intentions. He called her one evening, after dinner, feeling both excited and nervous.

“Mom, there’s something I need to tell you,” Frank began, his voice steady despite the nerves. “I’ve been seeing someone. Her name is Emily, and she’s incredible. I’m thinking about marrying her.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line before his mother spoke. “Frank, that’s wonderful that you’ve found someone you care about. But don’t you think it’s a little too soon? You’re still young, and you have so much ahead of you. What’s the rush?”

Frank sighed, expecting this reaction. “Mom, I know it seems fast, but I’ve never been more sure of anything. Emily is the one. I want to build a future with her.”

“Frank, I just don’t want you to make a decision you might regret later,” his mother said, her tone filled with concern. “Marriage is a lifelong commitment. You’ve only been together a year. You should take more time to really get to know each other.”

“I’ve never been more certain of anything,” Frank replied firmly. “I love her, and I know she loves me. I’m not going to wait just because it’s what’s expected. I’m ready for this.”

“Frank,” his mother said softly, “I’m only saying this because I care about you. But if you’re sure, then I’ll support you. Just promise me that you’ll think carefully about this.”

“I have, Mom. I really have,” Frank assured her. “I appreciate your concern, but this is what I want.”

Just a year after they started dating, Frank proposed to Emily, and she said yes without hesitation.

Their wedding was a small, intimate affair, with only close friends and family in attendance.

Frank and Emily’s newlywed life began like a dream. The first few months were ok—dinners together, late-night conversations, and the simple joy of sharing their lives. Emily seemed to embrace her new role as his wife, always with a smile and a kind word. Frank felt like he was on top of the world, he taught he had made the right choice in marrying her.

But as the months passed, things began to change. When Emily found out she was pregnant, Frank was overjoyed. He had always wanted children, and the news filled him with a deep sense of purpose and excitement. However, as Emily’s pregnancy progressed, her character began to shift. At first, Frank chalked it up to the hormonal changes that came with pregnancy, but soon it became clear that something was different.

“Frank, can you please stop staying around me?” Emily snapped one evening as he tried to help her into bed. “I’m not an invalid. I can do things on my own.”

Frank stepped back, surprised by the sharpness in her tone. “I’m just trying to help, Emily. I know this isn’t easy for you.”

“Well, you’re not helping. You’re just making things worse,” she retorted, turning away from him.

Frank tried to brush off her sudden irritability, telling himself it was just the stress of the pregnancy. But as the days went on, Emily’s outbursts became more frequent and more venomous. She began criticizing him over small things—how he cleaned, how he cooked, even how he spoke to her. The loving woman he had married seemed to be slipping away, replaced by someone he barely recognized.

“Emily, what’s going on with you?” Frank asked one night after yet another argument. “You’ve been so different lately. Is it the pregnancy? Are you feeling okay?”

Emily glared at him, her eyes cold.

Frank felt a knot form in his stomach. He wanted to be there for her, to support her, but nothing he did seemed to be right anymore. He noticed that Emily had started taking phone calls in private, often whispering in another room or stepping outside when she thought he wasn’t paying attention. Whenever he asked who she was talking to, she brushed him off with a vague answer, her irritation growing each time.

As the months passed, Frank’s concern deepened. He felt like he was living with a stranger, a far cry from the loving wife he had married. But he kept telling himself that things would get better once the baby arrived—that they were just going through a rough patch and that it was all part of the challenges of starting a family.

When Emily finally gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Frank was overwhelmed with joy. After childbirth, Emily then revealed her true colour.

She would go out and not come back for days and by the time she came back, she’ll appear to be so much drunk.
