Episode 10
THE UNDERCOVER
As you all know, I am a police officer. Stella worked with a travel agency as a secretary, Madam Mary, worked as the housekeeper, Celina and all the other children were students at, tertiary, high school and elementary schools. And my wife, Judith, doesn’t work. None of the family members worked in healthcare, construction, or any other field requiring protective gear. So that evening when I discovered a pair of black nose masks among the heaps of clothes the children were gathering, I was puzzled.
My curiosity grew. I remember the word of the widow the previous night and that of the missing bank staff.
“ The spy is a woman who is always in a nose mask”.
Here are a pair of nose masks. But then, which among the women owns them? I wondered as I watched the kids gently folding the clothes into a plastic bowl.
“Who owns that?”. I finally voiced my mind.
The two children first stared at each other in confusion and back at me.
…I mean those nose masks. Who owns them?”. I repeated.
“*You mean this?”. The younger one said, lifting a pair of black brassiere from the clothes. This story belongs to Joy Ifunanya.
“Not that. I mean the nose masks”. I had to move close enough to them to touch the pair before they understood what I was saying.
…This. Who owns them?”. I asked, lifting one up.
“I don’t know oh!!”. The older one said.
“Who washed them?”. I asked.
“Our grandma”. They replied in unison.
Of course I knew the answers already . Madam Mary was the cook and the nanny as well as the launderer…she washed for everyone in that house.
Before I could say one more word, Judith appeared from within. She smiled when she saw me.
“Hey, honey, you’re back. What are you doing out here?”. She asked, moving closer to me.
I quickly dropped the mask.
When she got closer,. she hugged and kissed me from jaw down to my shoulder.
“I missed you”. She whispered into my ears. Then she went ahead to licking my ears.
“Judith, please, stop this. We are outside”. I muttered, gently pushing her away.
She let go of me immediately.
“Let’s go inside then”. She said. She collected my phone from me, held my hand and led me up inside.
I sheepishly followed her as we silently climbed the stairs.
Immediately we got into the room, she dropped the phone on the bed and began to k¡ss me. After a few minutes of passionate k¡ss, I broke free from her.
“Judith, does anyone use nose masks in this house?”. I asked.
She wiped her mouth with her palm.
“Nose masks?. No one works in the laboratory in this house. Why would anyone have a nose mask?”. She chuckled.
“I saw a pair of nose masks among the clothes downstairs”. I said, looking into her eyes.
“Nose masks? Downstairs. Hmmm. I don’t know, ohh . She said.
She held me on the waist, and pulled me closer to her once again.
…. Does it matter who owns them?. It is none of our business. What matters right now is the two of us”. She said, biting my nose gently.
I tried to pull away from her. I knew I had to speak with the children. I needed to find out who amongst the three women owns the nose masks. But Judith was out to ruin my plan. She held my hands tightly, placed them on her bosom and began to move them over her breãsts.
“Did you know that it has been a long time since you made l0ve to me?”. She asked, smiling mischievously at me.
“Please, Judith, I am not in the mood for this right now”. I said, still trying to pull away..
“Then allow me to put you in the mood”. She said.
Before I could say anymore, she pushed me down on the bed, tore my clothes apart and ….. That was that.
By the time we came out, it was already late. The children and the other women had long gone to bed. She dished the meal, we both ate silently and went back inside .
As soon as we got to bed, she dozed off, and I stayed awake until 12am. I then quietly left the room, but not for the usual midnight meeting. I needed someone to discuss my concerns with, specifically about the masked woman. My stepbrother was the only one I felt I could trust.
But surprisingly, he wasn’t in the living room yet. I sat on the couch to wait for him and that was where I woke up in the morning.
For two days, I was seeking to speak with him, but I never wanted anyone to suspect us. It was on the third day that I finally got the opportunity I was looking for.
That evening, I came back from work to Judith hanging out with her friends, Celina locked herself up in the room, Stella visiting a friend while madam Mary and the kids were outside, playing. Samuel was sitting alone in the living room, watching cartoons. I called into the room, and made him sit on the bed with me.
“Divine, do you want to continue staying with me?”. I began.
“First of all, my name is Samuel, not Divine. And of course, I want to continue living here”. He replied.
“Good. Now, I want you to do something for me”.
He was listening with rapt attention.
“Someone is spyïng on your brother”. I said.
“Hmmm?”. He looked confused.
“Yes. Someone is monitoring me. Whenever I leave for work at night, someone follows me around. Someone from this house seems to have been hired to stalk me. I went on and on to narrate what I have witnessed in the last weeks. As I spoke, I noticed he was still confused. I paused. This story belongs to Joy Ifunanya.
.. Are you even understanding what I’m saying?”. I asked.
“I don’t understand. Why would anyone do that?”. He asked, concerned.
“I think they are just being jealous of my wealth”. I said.
“So what do you want me to do now?”. He asked, after a few minutes of silence.
“Good question. I want you to act as my own spy. I want you to monitor all these people. Very importantly, I want you to look out for who owns a nose mask in this house”. I said.
Up
“Is that all?”. He asked.
“Yes”. I said, nodding
“That is very simple”. He said..
I shook hands with him.
“That’s my boy. But I paused when I remembered something.
…Now, one more thing”. I said.
“ Do not ask questions. Just observe. And if anyone asks you anything, don’t reply”. I said.
“Okay, sir”. He said, nodding to every word I say.
“You can leave now before anyone suspects us”. I said, pointing at the door. But surprisingly he refused to move.
..Divine. Sorry. I mean Samuel, you can leave now” I repeated.
“Just like that?”. He asked.
I was a bit confused about his response.
“What do you mean just like that?”. I asked.
“Are you not forgetting something, sir?”. He asked.
“What’s that ?”. I queried.
He stretched out his palm in front of me.
“You need to find me small something”. He said with a mischievous smile playing across his face..
What!!
This was the least I expected from a 12 year old boy. What has the world turned into?”.
I’m suspecting your wife Judith to be the undercover
Same here too
“JUDITH”
