    CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

    The Faculty Mobility for Partnership Building Program (FMPBP) provides opportunities for Canadian faculty to do short-term research and teach in Latin America and the Caribbean. The program is offered by Global Affairs Canada to support Canada’s education relations and engagement in the region by advancing institutional partnerships in the areas of research, student mobility, joint programming, and capacity building.

    The primary objective of the program is to increase, diversify and strengthen institutional collaborations between Canadian post-secondary institutions and their counterparts eligible under the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP).

    Canadian institutions interested in participating should promote the grant to their faculty and to eligible partner institutions. Canadian faculty interested in participating should review the eligibility criteria and contact their international office for application details.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible,

    • ✔ a candidate must be a full-time professor at a Canadian post-secondary institution
    • ✔ a Canadian post-secondary institution must be a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
    • ✔ a host institution must be located in one of the following eligible countries:
      • Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos
      • Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama
      • North America: Mexico
      • South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela
    Scholarship value and duration
    Value Duration Activities
    $7,000 maximum 3 to 8 weeks Teach and/or conduct research in eligible countries.

    How funding works

    Canadian institutions will receive funding from Global Affairs Canada, through its legal name, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) in the form of a non-negotiable grant agreement and will be responsible for providing the funds to successful candidates. Should a selected candidate not take up the grant, Canadian institutions must return those funds to DFATD.

    Please note that the terms and conditions outlined in the grant agreement are non-negotiable.

    Eligible expenses

    Canadian institutions will provide funds to the recipient to cover the following eligible costs:

    • ✔ visa or study/work permit fees
    • ✔ transportation via the most direct and economical route
    • ✔ health insurance cost
    • ✔ living expenses, such as accommodation, utilities and food (based on the rates and allowances listed by the National Joint Council  and the Public Services and Procurement Canada )

    The purchase of equipment (computer, tablet, phone, printer, etc.) is not an eligible expenditure.

    Application process

    Canadian post-secondary institutions must apply on behalf of eligible candidates before the deadline.

    Application instructions for Canadian institutions

    1. Assign a program coordinator to complete applications.
    2. Select “Login or Register” to create a My EduCanada account for your institution. Ensure to select Institution for your account type.
    3. Once you have logged into your account, select the Faculty Mobility for Partnership Building Program and click Apply.
    4. Enter data in the required fields and follow the instructions on the application form.
    5. Click Validate and save as you progress through the application form.
    6. Upload all required supporting documents. Each document must be smaller than 5 MB and in .jpg, .gif, .png, .pdf, .doc, .docx, .txt or .xlsx format.
    7. Review all components of your application for accuracy and completeness.
    8. Read and accept the conditions of the “Declaration and permission” statement. Click Submit. You will receive a confirmation message and a reference number for submitted applications.
    9. Print or download the form for your records using the “Print|Download” function.

    Supporting documents

    Scholarship selection criteria

    We evaluate applications based on:

    • Potential for the activities to create and/or advance institutional partnerships between the home and host institutions (50% of score)
      • institutional scope of the proposed collaborative activities
      • alignment of the proposed activities with the Canadian institution’s internationalization efforts and priorities
      • the Canadian institution’s preparedness for establishing a partnership
    • Evidence that the planned partnership-building activities will be carried out successfully (25% of score)
      • the candidate’s relevant experience, leadership, and language abilities
      • feasibility and accuracy of timeline and budget
    • Overall quality of proposed activities (25% of score)
      • clear articulation of activities and expected outcomes
      • foreseeable impact both in Canada and in the host country
    We give priority to first-time candidates, institutions developing new partnerships, and institutions with limited previous experience in international collaborations.

    Key dates

    Application deadline

    The deadline for Canadian institutions to submit online applications on behalf of eligible candidates is 11:59 p.m. EST, November 19, 2024.

    Canadian institutions should establish an earlier deadline with the eligible candidates and the host institutions to ensure timely receipt of supporting documents.

    Notification of results

    The scholarship administrator will communicate successful results to Canadian institutions in February 2025.

    The administrator will not provide feedback on unsuccessful applications.

    Canadian institutions are responsible for notifying candidates of successful results.

    Candidates should contact their Canadian institution regarding the status of their application.

    Arrival in host country

    Recipients can travel no earlier than April 1, 2025. All funds provided by DFATD related to the project must be expensed by March 31, 2026, however the actual project end date may extend beyond March 31, 2026.

    Successful candidates who have incurred eligible expenses prior to the release of competition results will receive funding retroactive to the beginning of the fiscal year (April 1, 2025).

    Grant conditions

    Within 30 days of the termination of the project, grant recipients must produce a narrative report of maximum 5 pages, including:

    • the summary of undertaken activities, their results and number of beneficiaries
    • the impact of the project on creation or advancement of a partnership between the host and home institutions
    • plans to formalize the collaboration through an institutional agreement (if applicable)
    • plans to publicize the completed activities (if applicable) and/or to acknowledge Global Affairs Canada’s support

    Additional information

    • Only applications submitted directly by Canadian post-secondary institutions will be considered.
    • Grants cannot be deferred and are not renewable.
    • Grants are subject to availability of funding from the Government of Canada.
    • Grants are not taxable for either the Canadian institution or the scholarship recipient.
