My wife my Nemesis episode 9

MY WIFE, MY NEMESIS
CHAPTER 9

“I’m sorry. I’m deeply sorry. I was wrong. I was totally wrong. I admit that and here I am feeling remorseful, please forgive me.” I recited the speech I’ve practiced as I drove back to the hospital, to my wife. I’d summoned her to a secluded area outside the hospital immediately I got there.

I knew that was what she was definitely after. I knew women always expected apologies when they were wronged. She wanted an apology and I’ve decided to just give it to her even though it bruised my ego. I just needed her to cooperate with me so I could sort out the issue of my mother’s po.i.s.oning.

“You are sorry?” She asked me in utter disbelief. She definitely couldn’t believe that the mighty Darlington would apologize to her. Her doubtful eyes told me so.

“Of course, I am. I’m very sorry. What I did was terrible so I should be sorry. I tried to k.i.l.l you and my mother took the fall. I shouldn’t have done that.” I replied her begrudgingly. She heaved a deep sigh.

“Why did you do something you’d later be sorry for? Did you really detest me that much? To the extent of buying po.i.s.on and adding it to my wine?” She asked gently and peered at me. I didn’t know what else to appease her with apart from the apology I’d practiced. I wasn’t prepared for any sweet explanation so I snapped at her.

“If you were me, wouldn’t you be annoyed by the whole deal? I mean, I was only enjoying my life the way I deemed fit, and you came out of nowhere, claiming you’re an avenger. Yeah, I know I’m guilty of playing with and breaking women’s hearts, assaulting and giving them permanent scars…but all that, were simply for fun. And as for those women who got their wombs damaged because I asked them to abort after impregnating them, I shouldn’t be blamed for it. It wasn’t wholly my fault. They should be blamed too. They did it because they wanted to do so. I gave them lots of money because I knew that was what they truly wanted. We all catched fun and got what we wanted. So, what did I do wrong? I didn’t say they should come to me…” I realized I was getting angrier as I spoke so I paused. I knew I had to comport myself and not lose the patience I’d been holding onto, in order for me to achieve my aim.

“I was giving you money too when you and I were going out, wasn’t I? I clearly told you that you were a fling. I told you I don’t do relationships, I wasn’t even ready for marriage but you infected me with HIV, tied me down, and claimed you’re my karma. Was I the one who defi.led and infected you with the disease when you were a teen? You’ve been damaged before you approached me. I don’t think I deserve that.”

I finished my explanation, exasperatedly. I didn’t know her problem. I was just being a man, a rich handsome man who was enjoying all the attention, women were giving him. I didn’t think anything was wrong with that.

“Yeah, I’ve been damaged before I approached you, but how about those women you actually damaged? Who will marry them? I wasn’t catching fun when you’d chain me up and beat me to stupor all in the name of enjoyment. Do you know that I have permanent scars all over my back now, thanks to you and your way of catching fun? You’ve damaged me more. Yet, I don’t deserve marriage from you? Yet you’re so annoyed that I become your wife! Why are you so despicable? Why are you men so cr.u.e.l?” Her eyes welled with tears as she screamed at me. I rolled my eyes frustratedly at her dramatic display.

“Please, stop being dramatic. Things like that happen all the time and the world hasn’t ended because of that. There are many men like me out there and they aren’t being crucified like this. I do not deserve to be going through this h.e.l.l just because I exhibited my youthful exuberance.” I informed her firmly. She shook her head vigorously and blinked severally, in a bid to shake off the tears that were threatening to fall from her eyes.

“I can see you’re going to be cocky till the end. I thought you’d be feeling remorseful by now after all you’ve been through, but no, you’re forever the cocky Darlington I know.” I noticed she was starting to raise her voice and since I knew that’d lead us to nowhere meaningful, I breathed in and out deeply to calm myself down.

“See, let’s address the issue on ground. I promise I won’t ever try to harm you again. I promise. I sincerely mean it. I will accept the heartbreaking fact that we’re legally married and there’s nothing I can do about it, so please just let go of the issue. I made a mistake by po.i.s.oning the wine and i’ve learnt my lesson the hard way. I promise to abide by the rules you set for us.” I pleaded to her as calmly as my ego could allow. She huffed.

“So, what do you want? I know you’ve a reason for bringing yourself down to beg me, let’s hear it out.” She pointed out and I jubilated inwardly. A small smirk crept on my face.

“Now, we’re conversing! We’re going to cover up this incident brilliantly and nobody apart from the two of us will know the truth. You and I will explain to my father that the fault was from our newly employed housemaid. She was negligent of cooking hygiene. She confessed that because she wanted to impress my mother whom she was meeting for the first time, she went ahead to take out the expensive plates, spoon and cup I’ve stored away for many years, and used them to serve her without washing them at all. So, that was how my mother became a victim of food p.o.i.s.o.ning. Very simple!” I analysed the plan to her.

“Oh, wow! Look at how you brilliantly plan to implicate someone else. An innocent person at that! Those housemaids are only trying to work and feed themselves, I can’t knowingly make them lose their jobs for your deed.” She announced. I hissed in annoyance.

“They are not going to lose their jobs. My father hasn’t seen any of them before. We will simply tell him that I’ve sacked her and whenever my mother is around, your duty is to make sure that the particular housemaid who attended to her that fateful day, never showed up in her sight, till she leaves our house. She can’t be coming to my house everytime, you know.” I explained and that seemed to put her mind at ease.

“Hun! Let me think about the whole thing. I will get back to you.” She informed me and wanted to start going. I stopped her.

“You know there’s no time for that. My father will be here soon. Just do this for me and I promise to never try to harm you again. I’m ready to start trying to live with you peacefully…” I announced to her and pulled her closer to my body by her waist. She wanted to free herself from my grip but I held her down as I caressed her neck with my other hand.

“You should know I’m a man of my words. I’m willing to start trying to live with you peacefully even though it will be very hard.” I told her again. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. My guts told me she was considering my request. I smirked.
