The Divorce Episode Nineteen

Diana had been devastated after she mistakenly signed the documents that led to the sell of the company. She has been indoors for many days. After two weeks of staying indoors, she got a call from Joan from London.

“We have received a report of what happened. I trusted you and instructed you to handle the company with care. When I was leaving Nigeria, I instructed you to allow Tekena to handle the company since he has the technical knowledge. I was shocked when we were told you sacked him. It was not supposed to be so. You were supposed to make him the chief operating officer of the company while he reports to you. But you hastily sacked him out of pride and your appetite for revenge. This has destroyed the company.” Joan said as she paused to be sure Diana was listening.

Diana was listening to Joan intently. In fact, she was weeping as she listened to Joan who sounded very angry and distressed with the way she was talking.

“You have destroyed the company and there’s nothing we can do about it. We will have no options than to sell our remaining assets in Nigeria and exit the country. As for your baby, she remains our child. You will receive a monthly allowance of N2 million to care for her. However, the company which was placed under your care is lost forever and there’s nothing we can do to rescue it. We will be in touch but for now, that is all my father and Jones asked me to relay to you.” Joan said as she hung up the phone.

Diana’s unhappiness increased when she heard all that Joan said. She wept all day. In the evening, she decided to pay Tekena a visit. She wanted to give him a piece of her mind. When she got to Tekena’s shop, he was busy attending to his customers but he left the shop to listen to her.

“I have failed you as a wife. I destroyed our marriage. I destroyed my home with my own hands. I gave another man my sweet apple and got pregnant while still under your roof. I gave birth to a child that doesn’t belong to you under your roof. You were there to help me out in many ways even though I knew you were not happy about the whole thing. I was wrong. I destroyed everything we built and the love we shared even though we did not have much money. We had love and we cared for each other, but I destroyed it. It was my fault. I accept the blame.” Diana said as Tekena listened intently without saying a word.

“However, I want to say that whatever I did I did for us. We were poor and constantly lacking money, so I had to look for a way to make sure you got a good job. After you applied for that job, I went to the company and offered my sweet potato to Jones, who was the manager at that time. I told him my husband must be the one to get the job. He ate the sweet pear and satisfy himself. That was why when you went for the interview, it was so easy for you because I had gone to soften the grounds. All other applicants were sent away and you were the one who got the job. Did you know I was the one who paid the price? I paid a heavy price for you to get that job. I sacrificed for you.” Diana said.

“I thought Jones would let me be, but after tasting my sweet apple, he wanted more. He kept coming back to take another bite. I resisted him but he threatened to sack you if I don’t give apple anytime he wants. That was how he tricked me and I started visiting his house and it did not take long before I fell in love with him. I could not control the whole thing again. It was against my wish but there was very little I could do. He kept threatening to sack you and I did not want you to lose your job. That was why I stayed with him as his girlfriend even though I was still your wife. That was how he got me pregnant.” Diana continued talking. She had started crying and Tekena was just looking at him without saying anything.

“When I got pregnant, I knew immediately that the baby did not belong to you because it had been long you ate my sweet apple. Jones was the only at the time. I did not know what to do. I did not know if I should leave your house or to stay. I stayed but unfortunately for me, Jones left Nigeria and I was left alone to deal with my problems. Luck smiled at me and the family offered me the company to manage, but now, even the company is gone, because I sold it without knowing.” Diana said. Her tears had increased.

“I came here to tell you all these so that you would know the sacrifices I made for you and for our family. Everything you own today came from the sacrifice I made for you to get a job. I know we can never be together again, but I ask for your forgiveness. You are a good man and I know you would never have married another woman if I had not gone astray.” Diana said as she started leaving the scene. Tekena called her back.

“I’m sorry too. I should have made more efforts to know what was going on, but even when I found out, I didn’t do anything about your cheating. I knew you were giving your apple to Jones, but I didn’t know you did it at first to get me a job. I appreciate all the sacrifices you made for me. As a result of those things you did, my life got better financially. But I was acting based on the information available to me. If you had opened up to me earlier, we would have stopped all these before it happened. But I’m just finding out that it was because of you that I got the job. You didn’t need to do that for me. Don’t you believe in me? It was wrong to give your sweet apple to a man to get your husband a job. While I appreciate all you did for me, I’m sorry to say that our marriage has been destroyed. We can never be together again. We are officially divorced. I have already filed the divorce papers in court. I hope you and your baby will find peace. We all have to move on. I have moved on, and I want you to move on too. You are a good person despite the mistakes you made.” Tekena said. Both of them hugged each other in tears.
