The Divorce Episode Fourteen
Diana and Joan got to the hospital the next day without knowing the game which Ada had played with the lab technician. Joan picked up the DNA test result and opened it right in the hospital.
Diana was very excited as she was fully convinced that it was Jones who got her pregnant. Joan too was convinced that the child looked exactly like her brother Jones. So there was no doubt in their minds that everything would go as planned. In fact, they considered the DNA test a mere formality, but they were about to be shocked.
When Joan opened the test result, she didn’t expect what she saw. She called Diana’s attention and she too was thrown off balance by the result of the test. They both called the attention of the lab technician, asking him to help them with further interpretation. They thought they were not seeing well, or may have misread what was written in the document.
“Please, what does this test mean? Is it really what we are seeing? Does it mean the baby does not belong to Jones?” Joan asked worriedly.
“Yes! That’s right! The baby may belong to someone else. I suggest you bring any other man you have intimate relationship with for testing as well. But according to the test I conducted, the baby has no blood relationship with Jones or Joan.” The lab technician said. Diana and Joan left the hospital more confused than when they came for the test.
“This is confusing. What is going on? I’m pretty sure this baby looks like Jones. Look at the child’s face, look at her nose, even her eyes colour looks exactly like my brother. I’m suspecting a mistake somewhere or there may have been a sabotage of the process.” Joan said with conviction. She was sure the child belongs to her brother.
“It’s true that I was also with my husband when I was seeing Jones, but I gave Jones more time than I gave to my husband. I often spent more time in his house and bed that I spent with my husband. There’s no doubt in my heart that Jones was the one who got me pregnant. I’m confused right now.” Diana said tearfully. Joan encouraged her to stop crying.
Joan was restless when they got home, and she wanted to have answers to give to her father that day. Her father had asked her to give him a reply about the baby as soon as possible so that they would take a decision about her future and status in the family.
Joan left the house alone, driving to the hospital with a single mindset of finding out what had gone wrong in the test result. She was sure someone must have sabotaged it. When she got to the hospital, she went straight to the laboratory department and confronted the lab technician.
“How much were you paid to falsify the DNA test result? You and I know that what you gave us as the result is false. How much were you paid? Tell me the truth and I will double the amount you were bribed with.” Joan said. Her facial expression was very serious and her audacious confrontation threw the lab technician off balance.
“I don’t know what you are talking about. I did my job professionally and I did not give any false reports. The baby doesn’t belong to your brother biologically and that’s what the test result said. What else do you want to hear from me? I told the truth.” The technician said.
“You lied. That baby belongs to my brother. I can see it and I can even feel it that she is my relative. How come your test is saying something different? Tell me who bribed you and how much you were paid and I will double the amount. Go ahead and tell me.” Joan said again with unwavering confidence. She brought out 2000 Pounds and dropped it on the lab technician’s desk. The man saw it when he lifted up his face from what he was writing. His face lightened when he saw the foreign currency. He smiled gently.
“How much is here?” The technician asked.
“2000 Pounce.” Joan said.
The technician opened one of his files and brought out another envelope containing the authentic test result. He handed it over to Joan as he took the money and pocketed it happily. Joan opened the result and saw that Diana’s baby belongs to her brother Jones. She looked at the technician angrily, but decided to leave without saying a word. She was not interested in any fight, she just wanted the truth.
But she went back to the office to find out who initially paid the lab technician to write a false report.
“Who paid you to do a bad job initially?” Joan asked the technician.
“Ada, Diana’s co-wife. I think she is threatened by the fact that Diana would have more stake in your father’s company if the baby turns out to belong to your family. She is trying to protect her husband, Tekena. She told me all these.” The lab technician said. He is the type of man who can sell anyone out for far as you give him money.
“Thanks.” Joan said and left the hospital satisfied.
“Here is the real result. The baby really belongs to my brother. The lab technician falsified the result, but I was able to get the right one. He said Ada paid him to do a bad job. But everything is fine now. Congratulations to us. Now, your baby has a full right in the family and also as a British citizen. I will go ahead and announce this to my father.” Joan said happily.
“Oh my God! I’m so excited that I don’t even know what to say. Thanks very much Joan. And for that witch called Ada and her husband Tekena, I will show them pepper. I will come back for revenge. All the evil they did against me and my baby, I will do them back. Tekena should be ready for me because I’m coming.” Diana said as she hugs Joan.
