#LILY πΈ
Some days after my mom’s death, I was taken to the orphanage home, since none of our relatives came to claim me. I never got any of my moms property not even her slipper, the only thing I got was a picture of her and my so called dad during their NYSC days.
Life at the orphanage was strange to me at first, I didn’t like the people in there, while the kids were playing, i would isolate myself and stay away from them, For a number of times I’ve tried every possible means to escape but each time I was caught.
The staffs in the orphanage had started to hate me because I was being a burden to them, they each wanted to get rid of me but I was saved by one of the staffs, her name was Halima.
She was an old Muslim woman but not that old probably 40 to 50 years of age, she was kind to me and treated me as if I was her own child, anytime I cried about mom, she would take her time and console me, in no time we soon got bonded to one another.
Halima was loved by all the kids and staffs of the orphanage because of the kindness and care she showed to them , whenever something was wrong with one of the kids, Halima was called and she would soon take care of the problem.
It was because of her, I began to play with the other kids, and it was fun, I was energetic and played lot, sometimes I dominated the boys when it comes to their own sport, such as running, wrestling, any play that boys used to do.
Though we at the orphanage didn’t go to school, Halima was our teacher, she would tell us moral stories, teach us puzzles and tell us riddles to solve and she would advice us not to become bad people of the society, She would then ask us what we would want to become in the future, each of the kids had an idea of what they would want to be but not me, I would always say, I don’t know.
Life at the orphanage wasn’t bad at all, with time I soon got used to it, and during that time, I had spent 5 years in that orphanage, and most of the kids we used to play with where being taken by some people who had no kids of their own.
By the end of it all I was soon alone, more new kids came into the orphanage but they were little and feeble, Sometimes I would help Halima take care of the kids, by bathing them or washing their clothes, Life soon became a bore .
One Saturday afternoon after work, I sat in my room wondering about how my life would turn out, Everyone I knew was gone, especially mom cause it has been long since she died, I took out her picture and looked at it, so I wouldn’t forget her face, it was the only picture I have of her tears soon welled up in my eyes and began to cry.
Halima heard my cries and came into my room to see what was wrong.
.
Halima β‘ Subhanallah, Lily what is wrong?
.
Lily β‘ (crying) I just want to see my mom…
.
Halima β‘ My child, stop crying, I hate to say this but your mother is not going to come back, God has sent her to a better place.
.
Lily β‘ But she promised to stay with me forever. She promised.
.
Halima β‘ Nothing lasts forever my child but she will always be with you in your heart.. So stop crying, I’m sure she never meant to leave you! Those men that killed her, God will punish them, okay?
Come let’s go let me buy you some fura da nono.
.
Lily β‘ Thanks but I’m not hungry.
.
Halima β‘ (clapping hands) heh, heh, lily, is you today that don’t want fura? Its your favorite o.
.
Halima was right, it is my favorite, that drink is the best thing I’ve ever taste, its better than this yoghurt, Ever since Halima gave me that drink when I first came here, I became crazy about it, I couldn’t do without it.
Halima playfully dragged me out of the room and went to buy me the Fura.
Minutes later after I had consumed it to my satisfaction, I went to Halima’s room to plait my hair, she loved to plait my hair and she took care in brushing it and applying some sweet smelling lotion on it, my hair soon became long and silky, Halima never plaited my hair the way other girls used it, she would just plait my hair the pony tail style and it was beautiful.
That evening, a couple of people came into the orphanage, it would seem they wanted to pick a child for themselves, all the kids including me was assembled in front of them, The couple went around looking and touching the kids, and from the looks of their faces, they weren’t satisfied, as the man was about to get discouraged, his wife spotted me and they converged on me, the wife started touching my face and my hair, it would seem she was pleased with what she saw, the man too was staring at me as if he had seen money on the ground.
After that we all dispersed, I went to Halima’s room and told her what happened.
.
Halima β‘ Ahh, Lily those people are interested in you.
.
Lily β‘ But that would mean, I’ll be leaving this place and I would never see you again…. I won’t leave you.
.
Halima β‘ Listen to me my child, a bright future awaits you, you can’t stay here for ever, besides I too won’t be here for long.
.
Lily β‘ (crying) so you want me to go? Don’t you want me?
.
Halima β‘ No, no, its not like that my child, I do want you! But these people will take good care of you more than us.
.
Lily β‘ Its a lie, you don’t want me, you never did, you’re just tired of me so you’re letting me go easily…… I HATE YOU! (running away)
.
Halima β‘ Lily come back, Lily, Lily….
.
Minutes later, the couple took me took to their house, Halima watched as I was taken away, I saw tears in her eyes but I never looked back to tell her good bye, from what I knew, this was a terrible parting, after spending all those years together, Today was the day we took separate ways, and this may also be the last time, I’ll ever see Halima ever again.
As I entered the car, I regretted why I never said good bye, I was hurt and angry to tell that nice old lady how appreciative I was, when she took care of me but I didn’t, I know she would miss me dearly and so would I, as the car took off, I began to cry, I looked back at the orphanage. Gradually it began to slowly disappeared out of sight as the car went on and on.
The couple who noticed how sad I was began to console me, they ensure me everything was going to be all right but I didn’t believe them, Why would everything be okay? Where was okay when I was taken away from Halima? Where was okay when my mom was murdered in cold blood? My mom believed everything was going to be okay but it was not, it never was, and nothing will be.
Finally we reached the house of the couple, it wasn’t much but it was okay, as soon as the car entered the house, I began to wonder how my life would be in this place.
The couple opened the car for me urging me to come down, it took a while before I got out of the car , After that, they led me into the house and it was quite lovely, there was a big TV with cable and a new CD player and large speakers π, there was a nice rug carpet and a lovely center table, as we went in, the couple sat me on the couch and introduced themselves.
.
Mr. Tayo β‘ Lily, my name is Tayo and this is my wife, Asimi.
.
Asimi β‘ Hello lily. What a lovely name you have.
.
Lily β‘…. Thank… You… ma.
.
Asimi β‘ Such a lovely child.
.
Tayo β‘ I agree,… Look here Lily.. We are now going to be your parents. I’m going to be your father and Asimi is going to be your mother.
.
Lily β‘ But I already have a mother.
.
Tayo β‘ Sorry lily but your mother has… er.. gone to a better place, but now we will be taking care of you.
.
Asimi β‘ Lily?
.
Lily β‘ Yes ma..
.
Asimi β‘ Can you tell us what happened to your mother?
.
This b*tch was stepping off her limits, besides what kind of person would ask a 10 year old about their mother’s demise? I didn’t want to tell her at first but seeing that she asked nicely, I decided to tell her what happened.
Minutes later, I told them everything I saw that night my mom was killed, Tayo and his wife had pity and sympathy in their eyes, they apologized for what happened and prayed that the men be caught and punished but in my mind I hoped they’re still out there cause when I see them, I will avenge my mom, no matter what it takes.
Later in the evening, they showed me my room, it was way better than my room at the orphanage, the bed was soft and comfortable and the place was clean, before I went to bed, I took a hot bath and it felt good, maybe being their adopted daughter won’t be such a bad idea after all.
After the bath, i wore my pajamas and went to sleep.
…………………
As the days passed, Tayo enrolled me in school, I was tested and seeing that I was quite intelligent I was placed in primary four!
I didn’t get used to school life cause I had spent most of my life in an orphanage, the kids were different, they weren’t like the kids back in the orphanage, I didn’t socialize with any of them, I stayed off them and minded my business, I didn’t talk much in class but I was performing in exam pretty well, The students and teachers began to notice me, while I was avoiding the students, the students were trying to get to know me especially the boys.
Boys! Whatever age they grow up into, they’ll still be immature, the boys in my class were annoyed that a mere girl was beating them in class, instead of performing better or staying out of my way, these brats wanted trouble.
.
Boy 1 β‘ Hey, I dey talk to you. Small girl.
.
Boy 2 β‘ Nigga, this girl fair o, see as she dey white.
.
Boy 3 β‘ See her hair, see as e long like this Oyibo people.
.
Boy 4 β‘ Wetin be her name self? Lily or wetin?
.
Boy 1 β‘ Lily, fine girl, come now.
.
Boy 2 β‘ Stop wasting your time, this stupid girl no dey talk!
.
Boy 1 β‘ She be dumb person?
.
Boy 3 β‘ No mind am, she just dey too dumb.
.
Lily β‘ You boys are stupid!
.
Boy 2 β‘ What? You hear wetin she call us?
.
Boy 1 β‘ Na her mother be stupid, bastard girl (laughing)
.
At first I tolerated their antics but calling my mom stupid, Hell no! this little dicks had gone too far, I rushed at them and threw punches at them, I caught one of them and gave him a good beating, I bashed his head on the wall breaking his nose!
As soon as the others saw what I did, they ran and went to report to our teacher, she came and saw the blood on the boys nose and how it stained his shirt, I was punished of course but so did the other Boys, one of the boys told the teacher what resulted into the fight.
Since then the boys stayed off my business.
Back at home, I helped Asimi with household stuff and other stuff she wasn’t such a bad woman either, she treated me with care and love as if I was her daughter.
I realized that Tayo and Asimi were married for quite some time and still no kids, the doctors said they were fine but still no children came, so they decided to come up with the idea of Adopting one instead.
During my spare times, I would go out and play with the neighbors children, they were very interesting unlike the ones in school, we had so much fun playing and doing other silly stuffs.
One Sunday evening, we were playing football in the neighborhood when we accidentally hit the ball into a strange house, as soon as the ball went in there, the kids ran away!
I wondered why the kids ran away, besides I don’t see any thing bad going in there and getting the ball, so I went to the house and knocked at the door!
In that moment, A tall huge black man came out with a scowl on his face, his face was mean and so cold, he looked down on me as If I was a bug, I looked back at him without any fear, asking him nicely to give me the ball.
.
Lily β‘ Sir, can we please have our ball?
.
He looked at me surprised by my boldness, He looked at me for a while examining me from head to toe, after that he went in and returned with the ball.
.
Man β‘ Next time, be careful okay?
.
I collected the ball and went back to the other kids, as soon as they saw me they were all surprised how I got the ball and I told them, They told me that I was lucky to escape because the man was not liked in the neighborhood, and that’s when I learnt the story of Silas.
Silas was the name of the man who gave me the ball, and according to what I heard they said the man was evil and wicked, people thought he was a cult member cause the man always wore black clothes, he wasn’t friendly with anyone in the neighborhood, and he never talked with anyone, he was a loner and prefers to be that way.
Though after what I heard about him, I found that hard to believe , So I decided to know about more about the man.
One day as I came back from school and realized there was nobody at home, and none of my friends were at home, so I went to Silas’s house, I was warned not to go there but I went on instead, I knocked at the door and seconds later he opened the door and saw me, looking surprised.
.
Silas β‘ Little girl, what are you doing here?
.
Lily β‘ Can I stay in your house? My parents are not around.
.
Silas β‘ No! Leave and don’t ever come back here.
.
He shut the door in my face, and went back inside, he was expecting me to leave but I stayed, but the reason why I stayed was because I smelled a delicious aroma of food in his house and I was really hungry.
Silas checked his window to see if I was gone, he was shocked when he saw me sitting on his front door, a while later he opened the door and allowed me to enter.
His room was neat and there wasn’t a lot of stuff inside, he had no TV just a radio and a pair of sofas and a messy rug carpet, on his wall were guns… Lots of guns..
I sat down on his sofa looking at the place with curiosity… Silas went back to his table and began to eat his food.
Watching him eat and swallow the food made me even more hungrier and my stomach started making funny noises… Silas looked at me for a while munching the food inside his mouth.. He gestured me to come over to the table and he served me some of his food on another plate.. I didn’t wait to be asked to eat, I devoured the food and it was so delicious, he looked at me and smiled at little…
.
Silas β‘ Little girl.. What’s your name?
.
Lily β‘ Lily..
.
Silas β‘ Lily what?
.
Lily β‘ Just lily.. I was adopted… I never knew my father except my mother and she too is gone..
.
Silas shook his head in pity, He kept looking at me as I kept eating… After a while, he continued talking.
.
Silas β‘ You’re bold, strong and fierce for a little girl.. You remind me of a friend of mine..
.
Lily β‘ What’s his name?
.
Silas β‘ His name is Austin.. But we used to call him assassin..
.
Lily β‘ Assassin? Who does it mean..
.
Silas β‘ Never mind.. From now on, I’ll call you Lily Assassin.. The name suits you..
.
Lily β‘ Then what should I call you..
.
Silas β‘ Call me Silas.. Just Silas..
.
