3RD OCTOBER 1997

EP 16

Rose’s heart was beating loudly and turbulently like an overflooded river. Though she hadn’t heard anything from Samuel for a while now but she knew what Samuel was capable of doing. They were several times Rose contemplated on spilling the truth to Donald but she fears for her life. She was already at a crossroads, she knew she definitely wouldn’t be able to follow the two roads, she will have to decide soon. As she sat in her office waiting disturbingly for the outcome of the meetings. As she waited, she already made up her mind to tell Donald the truth and seek for his forgiveness after the meetings. She knew her betrayal would have consequences but she was ready to bear her cross.

“The voting has come to an e—” the moderator was about to announced when a young man dressed in a native Yoruba agbada and a cap walked in majestically with a smile on his face. “Not so fast, I’m yet to cast my vote, moreover, i have a very important announcement to make too” the young man announced as he stepped into the hall . Everyone turned at him with their mouths widely ajar. They haven’t seen such a young charismatic man before. Their eyes rolled from left to right then right to left as they whispered between themselves who the young man was.

Immediately Mr Jege saw the young man, he almost fell down from his seat, it was like he saw a ghost. He heart jumped, his bloodd pressure rose drastically and Mr Jege almost fainted but he controlled himself by coughing severally. “Security! Security!!” Mr Jege called loudly and everyone wondered what was happening, what gave the young man the impetus to invade a managerial meeting. “bundle this intruder out of here immediately!” Mr Jege screamed bitterly and the security came in swiftly and prepared. “not so fast, I’m no intruder everyone. First of all, my apologies for coming late to this very important meeting. As a major shareholder myself, i shouldn’t have been late but i was caught in a situation beyond my control!, my apologies ” Samuel said and everyone marveled at what he said. “Major shareholder!” They questioned rhetorically as they whispered more between themselves. “let the young man explain himself!” Everyone demanded asking the security men to let him be.

“I’m Samuel, the only son of the late Idoko who was once a director in this company. Today I’m here as a shareholder with over twenty five percent of the company’s shares, by the legal constitution of this company, having such amount of shares gives me automatic right to be one of the decision makers of the company. “Hum?. Director Idoko?. This is surprising!!” The people murmured surprisingly as Samuel spoke. It was a surprise to them seeing a very young man owning over twenty five percent of shares.

Every words that came out of Samuel’s mouth was like a sharp razor blades going against Mr Jege’s flesh. He could feel his bloodd running out, he could felt great pains and anguish as Samuel spoke. Knowing that Samuel, the son of Idoko was the mystery person behind all the anonymous share buying, it felt like life was been squeezed forcefully out of him. Donald was still confused as to what was going on but from the entire situation, he already knew that this new invader was definitely not for him. He felt great surge of anger running through him, he gritted his teeth and wished he could shred Samuel like a piece of useless papers and threw him away into a waste bin but he knew that was just his emotions craving his insanity.

“According to the company’s rules and regulations regarding the appointment of a new chairmanships, the winning candidate must secure at least 60 percent of the total votes which amount to 60 percent of the total shares so today, I’m here to declare myself a running candidate for this position too. With my twenty six percent shares and director Theophilus five percent and another ten percent from two other directors who willingly gave me the proxy to their documents. I present before you the originals of the documents for proper verification” Samuel declared as he cleared his throat and took his seat. Mr Jege began to sweat profusely, he was shaking and filled with bitterness but they was nothing he could do. He had thirty five percent shares while Richard had fifteen percent shares. From the calculation, since Samuel have 40 percent shares with him and Richard had fiveteen percent, nobody will eventually emerge as the winner at the end of the day.

“After counting the casted votes, i hereby declare the results openly before everyone here. Director Donald Jege secured a total of 18 votes from eighteen shareholders which amounted to thirty nine percent of the company’s shares. Mr Richard Akele secured 12 votes from twelve shareholders which amounted to twenty one percent of the company shares while Mr Samuel fidelis Idoko secured 3 votes from three shareholders which amounted to forty percent of the company’s shares. In regards to section 4, subsection 65, code Bi of the company’s code of guidance, it was clearly stated that, an eligible contesting candidate can only win the election to the position of the chairmanships of the company if he secures at least 60 percent of the votes during the elections. Having considered this, i hereby declare that this election is null and void as they is no eligible winner ” the moderator declared.
