CHAPTER FIVE
The fighting increased and it was now outside. I stepped out on the balcony to see what was happening or know from which room it was coming from.
The man pounced on the girl and kept on hitting her. She kept on screaming in pains but he paid no attention. She couldn’t scream no more but one could still hear the disturbing cries she made struggling to breath.
One thing that surprised me was that no one seemed to care. They all stayed in doors some scheming through Their windows. Others laughed hysterically and mocked at them.
After a while I could see she was no longer responding. The man had now left her and walking towards his door still insulting her. He went in and came back she wasn’t still responding. He moved closer to her and touched her by the neck then quickly tiptoed onto his room. Few minutes later everyone was still quiet I saw another girl tiptoed as well and went to where the girl was lying down and examine her putting more focused on her breath.
“ Sonia, Sonia, Get up. I have told you to leave this man but you won’t listen.” She said.
She touched her neck to check her pulse, placing her head on her chest to listen to the heart beat which had long gone. She concluded that she had long Crossed over. Then she sent out a loud cry, which lead the others rushing out of their rooms in disbelief
“ Elle est morte, il l’a tuée ohhh !!!!” (She’s dead, he has killed her ohhh “
The Lady exclaimed in deep shock as she kept whirling, carrying her hands on her head calling for the attention of the others. Many people came out now in their numbers. Went straight to the man’s door, barged in on him struggling to park and escape.
They dragged him outside gave him serious beatings and then called the police to come and take him. Everyone had gone back to their rooms after the body of the girl had been taken to the hospital.
I went in and noticed that Mike had equally gone down stairs to see what was happening like anyone else. I heard him speaking to Keren about the issue and I waited for him to come in so that I could load him with questions. When he came in he exclaimed,
“ Chaiiiii Woman!! They say when you fall in love, don’t fall with all your heart, but will they listen?”
“Wait Bro, How can a man beat a woman to dead like that?. ” I asked still in shock
“ It’s Sonia’s fault, she’s to be blamed for all this”
“How Do you mean?”
“ What I mean is she had several opportunities to run away from this man but she didn’t”
He went with the story, telling me that Sonia and Ben had been together for long and ever since they moved into the Cité, he has been beating her. The first time she was being beaten, some of the girls in the Cité and some boys went in to help and stop the fight, but she warned them to stay away and mind their business.
Same thing happens each time. There was a lady who had recently moved into the Cité, who was known to be her best friend. She decided to help her out one day and even saved Sonia from her boyfriend’s grip, instead of Sonia being thankful and grateful, she went crazy and took out all her frustration and Anger on her Friend, Mabel. That’s how she managed to get everyone minding Their own Business. It turned out they have been advising Sonia to leave this her Boyfriend but she gave everyone a deaf ear.
