Obinna couldn’t sleep.
For years, he had carried hatred in his heart, blaming Amaka for his mother’s death, punishing her with silence and cruelty. He had convinced himself that he didn’t need her, that he would never love her again.
But now, watching her slip further away, he realized the truth—he had been lying to himself all along.
He did care.
He had cared all these years but was too proud to admit it. And now, he might have lost her for good.
The next morning, he waited for her in the living room. When Amaka returned from dropping the kids at school, she was surprised to see him still at home.
“You’re not at work?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
He swallowed hard. “We need to talk.”
She sighed, placing her handbag on the table. “About what?”
Obinna hesitated. His pride screamed at him not to do it, but he pushed through.
“I was wrong,” he said quietly.
Amaka frowned. “What?”
“I was wrong… about everything.” His voice cracked slightly. “I blamed you for my mother’s death because I needed someone to blame. I convinced myself that you ruined my life, but the truth is… I ruined our marriage.”
Amaka stared at him, her emotions unreadable.
“I see you now, Amaka,” he continued, his voice filled with regret. “I see the strong, successful, beautiful woman you are. And I know I don’t deserve it, but if there’s still a chance… I want to try again.”
Silence filled the room.
Obinna’s heart pounded as he waited for her response. But when she finally spoke, her words shattered him.
“I’m happy you finally see me, Obinna,” she said softly. “But I see myself now too. And I won’t go back to the woman who begged for your love.”
Obinna’s breath hitched. “So… this is the end?”
She smiled, but it was a smile of peace, not bitterness. “No, Obinna. This is the beginning—of my new life.”
She picked up her handbag and walked away, leaving Obinna alone with the weight of his choices.
For the first time, he understood—love was not something to be taken for granted.
And he learnt that lesson too late.
