The Wheelbarrow Pusher Episode Six
Sarafina’s parents were happy to hear that at least, some people knew where their daughter was. The news had gone round in the media and everyone became alert. Everyone wanted to collect the $1 million. The policemen got there first. They convinced Sarafina’s parents that they knew exactly where Sarafina was hiding. They said they would take Sarafina’s parents straight to the small village and the two young people would be arrested without any stress. Kunle and everyone involved in the wedding preparations were happy to hear the good news. They were happy that hopes of the wedding holding have been revived.
“We will take you straight to the place where your daughter is hiding. He is hiding there with one poor young man who she calls her boyfriend. She has vowed not to leave him. She told us that she does not love Kunle, the man you have chosen for her to marry tomorrow. They went to a village where they now live. In fact, they are even planning to get married there and if we don’t go quickly, the young man might get her pregnant before we will reach there. So, I advise that we start moving immediately.” The police boss tells Sarafina’s parents.
“From here to the village I’m talking about is just a few hours’ drive. It will not take time at all. All I’m promising you is that you will have your daughter delivered to you this evening. Just give us the chance to prove ourselves. We cannot come here to tell you lies. We have seen your daughter and we know the exact place she is hiding. Give us the chance to go there and bring her to you without stress.” The police boss said with so much confidence in his voice.
“I’m happy to hear this, but are you sure of the things you are telling me? I don’t want to trust you people and in the end, I will be disappointed. Are you sure you are not here because of the $1 million that I announced as a reward for anyone who would help me locate my daughter? Are you sure you can deliver this job? I do not have much time. The wedding is coming up tomorrow and I don’t want my daughter to miss the wedding. If people hear that my daughter missed her own wedding, it will be an embarrassing thing to me.” Sarafina’s father said. His voice was very loud and commanding.
“I’m asking you if you are sure because I don’t want to trust in you and then I will be disappointed. I want my daughter to be in this compound this evening. I will pay whatever it will take to bring her home. But I will be very angry and disappointed if I send you on this mission and you fail to come home with my daughter in the evening. Are you promising me that you can deliver? If you fail me, you will not get the $1 million and I will even tell the police to sack you people for telling me lies. You know I’m powerful enough to get you sacked right?” Sarafina’s father asked the policemen.
“We are capable to do this job sir. Just give us the benefit of doubt. Just give us the go ahead and we will bring your daughter home to you. If we didn’t see her and her boyfriend, we will not be here telling you what she said. We will bring her to you in few hours. If we fail, you can do anything you want to us.” The police boss responded.
“Alright! You have six hours to bring my daughter home. Your time starts from now. By 1pm, I want to have my daughter home or I will take it that you have failed. However, if you are able to bring her home by that time, I will pay you the $1 million which I have promised. If you successfully do this job for me, I will even tell the police to give you people promotion. Please, don’t fail me. My daughter means a lot to me. Please, make sure you don’t harm her. Also, arrest the poor young man she is staying with and bring him to me let me teach him a lesson.” Sarafina’s father said. He dismissed them and they started driving to the village.
The policemen were already discussing how they will spend the money they will make from Sarafina’s parents. They were planning how they were going to share the money. Their joy knew no bounds because they were about to make easy money. It was just like their bread has been easily buttered for them. All of them said they were going to resign from their police jobs once they deliver Sarafina to her father and collect the $1 million.
“You think after collecting $1 million, I will still be a policeman? I will stop working with the police and suffering unnecessarily. Even if my share is only $100,000, I will still be very rich when I convert the money into naira. This is a very big opportunity for us and I don’t want us to mess it up. Please, let us go quickly before Sarafina will hear the news and run away from the village with her boyfriend. It will be easier for us to catch them if they are still in the village.” The police boss said.
They were getting close to the village after about two hours of driving. They were hungry, so they stopped by the roadside to eat ‘okpa’ and drink some water. After that, they continued their journey. Soon, they arrived at the village. They drove straight to the house where they had dropped Sarafina and the wheelbarrow pusher the first time they came there.
“This is the compound. I’m sure they will be inside this thatched house. Go and knock at the door.” The police boss said to one of his men. After the knock, Sarafina and the wheelbarrow pusher came out they were shocked to see policemen.
