The Night Shifts Episode Six
Binta has enjoyed a lot of freedom as a wife. In fact, she was the husband while Dr Nath could be described as the wife because she was the head of everything that happened in the house. She had everything under firm control. It was therefore very distressing for her when Dr Nath summoned courage and started challenging her. She no longer had the same authority she had over him. The man had started doing everything he wanted to do without consulting her first. She did not like the situation and she wanted to make sure things would go back to the way they were in the past.
Binta knew Dr Nath did not just start challenging her for nothing. She was aware that someone somewhere must be giving him courage.
“My husband that I know can never think of challenging me. No way! His brain is not sharp enough to think of challenging me. I did a thorough work in making sure that I brainwashed him so that I will milk him of all his money. The strategy has been working for many years. He cannot just wake up and start trying to regain his voice. Our people say if a bird is dancing in the road, the thing that is drumming for him is in the bush.” Binta said. She was on her way to the hospital where she hopes to catch the person helping her husband to gather courage.
She had ordered an Uber ride which came to the house and picked her. She did not want to use any of the cars at home. She wanted to use a taxi so that she would arrive faster.
“How can someone who does everything I want suddenly change and start disrespecting me? Who gave him that courage? I’m convinced that the frog does not jump in the daytime without reason. There must be a reason why my husband is challenging me. But I must act fast and nip everything in the bud. I will not allow him to regain the control of affairs at home. The home is my home and the house belongs to me. I did not come to marry him per ser, I came to make money from him. And I have been making money from him in peace until someone decided to come in between us and spoil business for me. Now, I’m struggling to get hold of my husband once again. But whoever did this would have me to contend with.” Binta said to herself in the car. The Uber driver was looking at her through the mirror and wondering what she was thinking about because her face was seriously frowned. His inner lights were on and he could see that she was not happy.
The drive to the hospital was a short one lasting a little less than 15 minutes, but Binta was restless throughout the journey. Soon, the driver dropped Binta off at the hospital gate and she walked in. People at the hospital already know her as Dr Nath’s wife. Even the gateman knows her.
“I hope the person giving my husband courage is here with him? I hope to catch the person and deal with him or her. Whoever is spoiling business for me will have to pay a heavy price. I don’t care to know who that person is. I have not spoilt another person’s business, so no one should spoil my own. I did not scatter another person’s home, so no one should scatter my own. Dr Nath is my husband and I should be able to determine what happens in his life.” Binta fumed as she entered the hospital’s reception area.
“I have come to see my husband. He is on a night shift, but I’m missing him so much that I cannot sleep alone at home. Please, show me where he is so I can talk to him.” Binta tells the hospital receptionist.
“Dr Nath is very busy attending to a patient. I’m sorry, but you cannot be allowed to see him this night. There is a patient that needs 24/7 supervision and Dr Nath was assigned to look after the patient. No one is allowed to see him until the patient is discharged.” The receptionist said. The receptionist and other staff at the hospital know Binta. They know how badly she treats her husband. They also know that Dr Nath recently became a happy man after they started seeing him with Chi Chi. All of them agreed that they were not going to disturb Dr Nath in his newfound happiness. They also decided that they would protect him from his wife. It was agreed that Dr Nath should be supported so that he would get more happiness from Chi Chi, and this is why no one questions Chi Chi each time she comes to the hospital and stays in the ward.
“What do you mean I can’t see him? He is my husband and I can see him any time I want. How dare you tell me I can’t see my husband? This is not the first time I’m coming here to see him.” Binta was shouting.
“This is not a shouting matter madam. You cannot see your husband this night. He is busy with work and you cannot possibly stay with him when he is working. You will become a distraction and he could make mistakes.” The receptionist said, standing his ground and denying Binta access into the hospital building.
“I will not go anywhere until you allow me to see my husband. I will rather sleep in the hospital tonight unless you allow me to see my husband. You don’t know me. You don’t know who you are joking with.” Binta said angrily as she sat on the floor and refused to leave.
“I’m just doing my job madam. There is no problem if you want to sleep in the hospital. I can even give you a bed. But I cannot allow you to see Dr Nath tonight.” The receptionist said. He knows what he was doing. He did not want Binta to go and spoil things for Dr Nath. Earlier in the evening, Dr Nath had told the receptionist to cover him if his wife comes. Dr Nath did not know that the receptionist and other staff at the hospital already knew what he was enjoying with Chi Chi. They are all rooting for him.
“I will stay here until daybreak,” Binta said.
