The Night Shifts Episode Sixteen
At first, Dr Nath did not want to talk about what happened in the bush. He regarded it as nothing. He did what he did to escape from the hands of his captors. The fact that he ate apples with Binta did not diminish his love for Chi Chi. He thought he acted wisely so as to escape quickly. It was because of what he did that he was able to come home fast to help Chi Chi. If he did not eat apples with Binta, he would still be in the bush with his captors. In his heart, he regarded himself as a very wise man, no matter what Binta was trying to do.
“You don’t want to talk? Tell Chi Chi what you did to me in the bush and how you did it. I want her to know that you will betray her as soon as after your wedding. She doesn’t know who you are yet. Look at how you ran off with me and my men. You abandoned her when she needed help. All you were thinking about was how to go and eat apples with me in the bush. You did not think of how that would make her feel. You just wanted to enjoy yourself.” Binta was still the one talking. Her voice was sarcastic and Dr Nath could see what she was trying to do.
Binta wanted to put a crack in his relationship with Chi Chi. She wants Chi Chi to feel that Dr Nath was an irresponsible person who could not be trusted.
“If I were Chi Chi, I will not marry you anymore. You cannot be trusted by any woman. You will cheat on your wife at the slightest opportunity. You have no shame and you will do anything to satisfy yourself at any moment. Any woman who is married to you is bound to suffer heartbreak. You definitely cannot give your heart to someone like that. He is a medical doctor and he is capable of helping you when you sustained gunshot wound, but he ran off with me and we ate apple in the bush. Throughout the time we spent in the bush, he did not even mention your name. It was my name that was in his mouth. He even told me he will never think about you again. He called you a liar and said you deceived him to follow you. Is this the kind of person you want to stay with?” Binta said to Chi Chi who was listening with rapt attention.
“This man here cannot be trusted. I know you are a good woman and you don’t deserve to be with a man like him. He is just here to steal your heart and break it. I don’t want you to suffer any heartbreak, this is why I’m telling you these things. I’m telling you the things he told me so that you will be in the best position to take the right decision for yourself. You should not settle down with him. Be wise my dear. This man will cheat on you.” Binta said sarcastically.
“Don’t listen to her! She is telling lies. She wants to plant a seed of discord in your heart and make you to reject me. She does not know that we are already married. She does not know that nothing will make you to reject me. Binta is a liar and she has always been a liar. You certainly cannot listen to this woman. Nothing happened between me and her. There is no truth in her mouth.” Dr Nath tells Chi Chi.
“But I feel like you are not telling me the truth.” Chi Chi tells Dr Nath.
“I’m telling you the truth. I just said nothing happened between me and Binta in the bush. She is the one telling lies. She just wants you and I to start fighting. Don’t you get it? She wants us to fight so that our wedding will be canceled. She is the one who stands to benefit from our separation. I will advise you to ignore her. Don’t think about the things she is saying because there is no truth in them. She is a terrible liar and you should be wise enough to ignore her.” Dr Nath said.
“He is trying to deceive you. He is the one telling lies. He does not want you to find out what he did to me in the bush. But I have tried my best to warn you.” Binta said.
“Will you tell me the truth or not? Did you touch this woman in the bush? Did you people do anything romantic? Did you leave me to go and eat apples with her? Is it true that you called me a liar? Did you tell her that you are not going to think about me again? Those things she said, are they true? Just let me know the truth.” Chi Chi said.
Dr Nath decided not to hide anything anymore. He told Chi Chi what happened in the bush and insisted that he did what he did so as to escape from captivity.
“If I did not deceive her and ate apple with her in the bush, she would not have allowed me to come back home to help you. What I did was strategic. It did not come from my heart, but I had to do it so that she would allow me to leave. When we finished, I was able to leave because that was exactly the plan in my heart. This should not give you troubles. My heart is not with Binta. My heart is with you and you of all people should know this.” Dr Nath said.
“So you left me here and went to touch this evil woman? You left me when I was injured and you went to eat apples with her? When you knew I was dying, you were in the bush eating apples with this woman? How dare you do that? I was the one who helped you out when you were in trouble. Why did you break my heart? You are already cheating on me even before our marriage could properly take off. You are a liar and I don’t think I will marry you again. I’m calling off the wedding.” Chi Chi said. When Binta heard that, she dropped her gun and left. She was happy to have achieved her aim.
“Now, I can go. They will not get married again.” Binta said to herself as she leaves the room.
