The Night Shifts Episode Thirteen
Night had fallen and everywhere was calm around Dr Nath’s house. He and Chi Chi had gone to bed after they finished eating their night meals. They were watching television together before they started feeling sleepy and then they decided to go to bed. But as soon as they lay their heads on the bed, trouble came knocking on the door. Binta arrived at the house with her boys and they all had guns. The boys were many and Binta was the one leading them. They forced the door open and gained access into the mansion. Some of the boys were outside to catch Chi Chi and Dr Nath if they tried to run away.
Binta followed two of the boys into the building. They searched everywhere, looking for Chi Chi and Dr Nath who were in the master bedroom. Dr Nath and Chi Chi had heard the sound of footsteps and they also heard when the gang kicked at their door and broke it, so they decided to come out from the bedroom to check what was going on. But as soon as they walked into the living room, they came face to face with Binta and her gang.
“You think I’m going to let you be? You think you I will just allow the two of you get married and to be happy? You think you are going to abandon me and my children and cling to another woman? I’m still very much around my dear husband and there is nothing to separate us. You are still my husband despite the divorce. You are my husband forever and I have come here to take my husband home.” Binta said to Dr Nath. Dr Nath and Chi Chi froze in fear after they saw the gunmen. They were scared but remained brave.
“As for you Chi Chi, you can go and look for another man who would marry you. Dr Nath is my husband. I know we have had many misunderstandings but that does not stop us from making peace again. We shall make peace and live as husband wife again. It is a normal thing for a man to have problems with his wife but that does not mean they will not be together again. You wanted to snatch my husband from me simply because we had a quarrel? That’s not going to happen. I have no business with you. I’m just going to take my husband and leave. Please, do not come looking for him. Do not come looking for my man, I’m warning you. He is my man, not your man. He married me before he met you. We became husband and wife many years before you even thought of snatching him from me. If you come to look for him, I will teach you a bitter lesson.” Binta said as she ordered the boys to take Dr Nath away.
“I’m not your husband. We have been divorced legally. I’m no longer married to you and I’m very much free to associate myself with another woman. For your information, I’m now traditionally married to Chi Chi and she is my wife. Go back with your men, because I’m not following you.” Dr Nath said to Binta. Even though he was scared of the guns, he still decided to show some bravery. He found it hard to just give up and follow Binta like a sheep.
“You think you were going to come here with guns and all these men and I will simply follow you out of fear? I’m not going to follow you. I have suffered so much humiliation in your hands for many years. I will never live with you again. I will never accept you as my wife again. You can go and enjoy all the money you have stolen from me. Go and live with your father. Never call me your husband again.” Dr Nath said. Chi Chi came forward to speak after Dr Nath had spoken.
“You think you can stop us from being happy? You think you can spoil our happiness? You can’t do that. We are already very happy and coming with guns to threaten us cannot stop us from going ahead with our wedding. We are already traditionally married and we are living together. You cannot separate us. You can never come between us. Take your men back and don’t you ever come into our house to threaten us again.” Chi Chi said bravely. She was being brave but her heart was beating very fast as if she has been running around. She held hands with Dr Nath and they spoke together.
“We are not going with you.” Chi Chi and Dr Nath said almost the same time.
Dr Nath and Chi Chi were highly resolute and brave, but Binta did not come to their house to play. She meant business. She was not going to take no for an answer. She was bent on taking Dr Nath away so as to scuttle their wedding plans. She wanted to make sure they were not happy. She wants them to suffer, so she was prepared to use force to get what she wanted.
“You think I have come here to play with you? You think these guns are toys? You think we are joking? I’m not joking with you. I have said I want my husband I’m going to leave with him weather you two like it or not. I have come to take my man. The man who married me. I can’t leave him for you Chi Chi.” Binta said with a loud voice. The sound of her voice was sorrowful and emotional. She was talking like someone who has lost something so precious. She was not happy and she was ready to do all it takes to get Dr Naths back and to start living with him again.
“He is not your husband anymore. Don’t you get it? He can’t follow you. If you want to take him, you must take me first.” Chi Chi said as she stood before Dr Nath, using her body to shield his own.
“You can go to hell.” Dr Nath said.
“Okay, let us do it the way you people want it.” Binta said as she collected the gun and shot Chi Chi.
