The Night Shifts Episode 11
When Binta saw the divorce notice in Dr Nath’s hand, she started crying. She knelt down to plead with her husband. Her eyes suddenly opened to the fact that she has been a bad woman to him. She suddenly became aware of the bad things she has been doing to him. She started pleading with him to withdraw the divorce case against her.
“I just said I have been here waiting for you to come back so that we could talk things out and settle as husband I wife. I have searched for you everywhere in the city but I did not see you. To be honest, I have realized my mistakes. I have realized that I have never been a good woman to you. I have found out that I did terrible things against you as my husband. You are a good man and I don’t deserve you. However, I’m asking you to give me a second chance. I treated you badly but I’m ready to make amends. Everything I did against you was my father’s fault.” Binta said tearfully.
“What do you mean it was your father’s fault? Your father told you to destroy the life of you husband? Did your father live in this house with us? Did he tell you to give me hell instead of happiness? What instructions did your father give to you? Are you a child that you will not know the difference between good and evil? Why are you blaming your father?” Dr Nath asked confidently. His confidence has increased since he met Chi Chi and he is not afraid of his wife anymore.
“My father was the one who asked me to deceive you to be paying your salary into my bank account. In fact, this is what my father does. My father has four daughters and I’m the fourth one. All the daughters of my father are now divorced because of this same problem. My father uses his daughters to make money from their husbands. This is why he makes sure that his daughters would marry men who are well established and who has good jobs. He would first of all make sure that the wedding is so big that the man cannot afford it. He would then sponsor the wedding but he will later come back to collect the money and then make profit from it. After collecting the wedding money, he will not stop. That was what he did to me. He asked me to continue to milk you dry by being in charge of your salary and earnings.” Binta said. Dr Nath was looking at her in silence.
“I had to find a way to brainwash you into this. Also, my father has a native doctor where he takes all the husbands of his daughters to. Do you remember the day you followed me to a native doctor? Do you remember the day you took an oath before a native doctor? You took an oath that you will allow me to control your money and bank accounts. You took an oath that you will allow me to control your life. You vowed never to challenge me. That was the day your problem started. But the whole thing was fake. The native doctor was not real, my father organized it and paid the man to do it just to put fear in you and it has worked. You remember how I deceived you to follow me to the native doctor? I didn’t tell you we were going to such a place. It was when we got there that you were forced to take an oath. Do you remember? However, when you met Chi Chi, she was able to convince you to go against me. Please, I’m so sorry.” Binta said while crying.
As Binta was talking, Dr Nath clearly remembered many years ago when he was taken to a native doctor against his wish. Learning that the native doctor was fake made him sad. Learning that it was just used to put fear in him made him feel terrible.
“I keep wondering what made me to take such an oath. This was why I was scared of you. Because I was afraid the oath would k*l me if I ever go against your wishes in my own house. You were able to siphon all my money. So you really did not come to marry me? You came to my house for business? You came to use me as a means of making money for your father. You turned me into your father’s ATM which you used to withdraw money monthly. While I worked like a slave, I was not seeing the money. All my mind told me was that I would die if I dared ask questions about my money. You are an evil person. You and your entire family are supposed to rot in jail.” Dr Nath said.
“Please forgive me. I don’t even have much of the money. Almost all the money you have earned went to my father. I just told you that this is what my father uses his daughters to do. He uses them to earn money from their husbands. I didn’t keep the money for myself. At a point, I got tired of seeing you suffer. I got tired of watching you have empty pockets while working so hard, but my father ordered me to continue taking the money and sending to him. There was nothing I could do to stop him because he is a powerful man.” Binta said. She was still crying.
“Well, at this point, we cannot go back. I have found happiness in the arms of Chi Chi who has helped me to see the light. If not for that woman, I will still be in the cage where you and your father kept me. I have decided to marry her. I have decided to be happy with her and I have decided to divorce you. You can now go back to your father’s house and live with him like the rest of your sisters who are divorced.” Dr Nath said as he dropped the divorce notice on the table and left.
A few days later, the divorce case was decided in favour of Dr Nath and they were separated. He was now free to marry Chi Chi.
“You think you can be happy without me right? I’m going to show you. I will make sure you will not marry Chi Chi. You will see what I will do to you.” Binta said to him after the divorce.
