OSUWAKE

Episode 3

It was indeed a traumatic experience. I stayed in the hospital for weeks and was later discharged. I didn’t start school immediately. I missed school greatly and always wished i never had that ugly experience.

The issue became pronounced and the news spread all over our neighbourhood. On my return from hospital; people trooped to our house in consolation. Many bought different gifts for me.

My neighbours were always in our house consoling me and doing so many things for me. They wanted me to get over it and be strong enough to fit into the community again.

Each time i try to be happy, the scars on my body and consolations from people reminded me of that ugly encounter with my own friends.
It was a terrible and horrible moment for me.

The four of my friends who molested and forced themselves on me spent several weeks or months in the police custody.

In addition, the two boys were banished from our community. They were non indigenes too and was also bigger than the rest of us.

The two other girls involved were from my place and so, spared from being banished.
They were my classmates and of the same age bracket with me too.

After a while, the tension the incident generated died down. I resumed school immediately and carried on with my normal activities. But i still lived with the trauma of experiencing such within me.

******************

My family moved on and we lived in peace ever since then until when my dad did something that shaked our church organisation. He joined the league of men involved in extra marital affairs.

Although we never knew as he played hide and seek keeping us in the dark. It was one of our church members who saw him and immediately drew the attention of my mum and so, we discovered the truth.

The truth became clearer when my dad got the lady pregnant – my dad impregnated his girl friend to the detriment of his family and congregation.

The church frowned against it as the congregation was strongly against one man marrying more than one wife. To this end, he was expelled from our congregation and he stopped attending the church.

Following my dad’s expulsion from the congregation, i and my other siblings were baptised and fully absorbed into the church.
In addtion to the above stated, we started fully when our dad stopped. I was fourteen(14) years of age then.

After my dad was expelled from our congregation, things started falling apart in my family. There was alot of in fighting and quarrels. My dad stopped appreciating my mum in everything she does and sees her as a useless woman. My mum’s food started tasting bitter in his mouth. Nothing dared to please my dad anymore; he rains insults upon insults at the slightest provocation.

My mum even got a brand name from my dad which is ‘riff raff’ my dad calls my mum a ‘riff raff’ always.

The issues lingered on and got to a point of serious controversy and domestic violence.

my dad gave my mum money to prepare a meal and went to his girl friend’s house. He didn’t return home that day. He came back the
next day and it was even midnight.

my mum served him food that night, he tasted the food and hell was let loose..

“this food is too salty, what kind of salty food is this, i can’t eat it” he echoed..

my mum was surprised and pleaded to taste it herself. She went ahead and tasted the food in bewilderment..

“daddy, the food is not salty at all, why are you saying that it’s salty?”

Immediately she said this, he frowned and started beating her instantly. I was there present with my younger brother but we couldn’t do anything. He punched her as if she was his punching bag. She begged him to leave her but he never listened.

before we knew it, he threw her to the ground and held her neck as if he wants to strangle her to death. We don’t really know what his intentions were that moment. She was reeling in pain and anguish. It was as if she was choking up helplessly. She almost died. We started screaming and shouting, i was calling on my elder brother, Leo to come to her rescue. Leo came to the scene immediately and pushed my dad to the ground.

“do you want to kill our mum”
“what has she done to you?” he asked him

my dad had fallen to the ground and was staggering to get up while Leo rushed to help my mum stand on her feet as she was struggling to recover from my dad’s earlier assaults.

Surprisingly, my dad held Leo, his son, on his manhood. I don’t really know what his intensions were this time again because he held on my brother’s manhood until he was unable to breathe again.
