MY WIFE, MY NEMESIS
CHAPTER 14
(Darlington’s POV)
I was utterly surprised when my wife walked out on me, out of the living room calmly without her usual energetic comebacks. I felt something was wrong somewhere. My guts insisted that she was planning something grand. I told myself I needed to watch out for her grand plan. I didn’t want to be caught unaware.
The following day was a weekend and I didn’t have to go to work. Since we didn’t use the same bedroom, we usually wouldn’t know when the other person had waken up until we both stepped out of our bedrooms and meet up elsewhere in the house, like the living room, dinning hall or the mini gym I’d constructed in the compound.
Normally on weekends, we’d meet each other in the gym. It was either I met my wife there or she walked in on me. The former had always been the case since she was an early riser. So, when I got to the gym and didn’t meet her, I felt somehow. I became worried when after spending like two hours in the gym and there was still no sign of her coming.
“This is very unusual. The Blessing I know would never miss her morning exercise. What could this woman be up to, exactly?” I wondered aloud.
I couldn’t concentrate anymore on my exercise as my brain wouldn’t stop thinking about Blessing. I stopped the exercise and left the gym room. I thought I’d meet her at the dinning room since it was 10am already.
I walked into the living room and stylishly scanned the dinning hall with my eyes as I strolled around the living room aimlessly, with the TV remote in my hand. I didn’t want her to notice that I was snooping on her. I was surprised to find out she wasn’t there as well.
“Kate! Come over here.” I called upon one of the housekeepers who was cleaning the dinning hall. She dropped the mopping stick in her hands and scurried over to where I was standing.
“Is my wife in the kitchen?” I asked her in a whisper. I didn’t want Blessing to think I was really concerned about her whereabout.
“She is not. She hasn’t come out of her bedroom this morning.” She replied me simply. I was alarmed.
“What do you mean she hasn’t come out this morning? Why? Tell me why she hasn’t come out yet? This is 10am. She’s an early riser, I know that about her very well… Why’d she miss her morning exercise and still wouldn’t come out at least for breakfast? Is she not planning to eat in the house anymore? What could she possibly be doing in her bedroom till this time? What exactly is she planning?” I inquired with urgency, frustratedly and Kate was confused.
“Sir, I’m sorry but I’m not in the right position to answer your questions. There’s no way I would know what Madam is up to, in her bedroom.” Kate replied me begrudgingly. I frowned my face when the realization dawned on me. I was grilling the wrong person. My anxiousness was getting the better of me. I didn’t understand what was wrong with me.
“You can go back to your duty.” I freed her, but she cleared her throat to say something.
“What would you like to have for your breakfast, sir? I can inform the cook for you, since madam isn’t awake yet.” She explained gently. She must have thought I was bothered because of food. I hissed in annoyance. How could I eat in that state of mind?
“Did I tell you that I’m hungry? Get out of my sight, please.” I snapped at her and she scampered back to the dinning hall. I breathed in and out deeply to calm my nerves then went to my bathroom to take a cold shower. I thought that’d definitely clear my head. I was wrong. I finished bathing, dressed up casually and went back to meet an empty livingroom at 11am. And that messed up my thoughts further. I was bothered. I concluded to just go check up on her in the bedroom, after all, it was my house.
I trotted to her door and knocked on it gently. There was no response. I knocked again and again but there was no response. I peeped through the hole on the doorknob and could hazily see her figure in bed. She’d covered her whole body including her head, with the thick duvet. I waited for some minutes to carefully access the situation, and realized she hadn’t moved or changed her position at all for those few minutes I’ve spent watching her. Different bad thoughts ran through my mind.
I became alarmed. I quickly jogged to the store where I’d kept the spare keys of all the rooms in the mansion and rummaged through the wardrobe for her room’s spare key. I got it and jogged back to her door. I opened the door and went inside panickingly.
My heart skipped a beat when I moved closer and it seemed she wasn’t breathing. I was frightened. I didn’t know why I was like that. I’d just thought of getting rid of her like two days ago but there I was, so frightened that something terrible had happened to her. I wondered what the fu.c.k was wrong with my mind.
