MY WIFE, MY NEMESIS
CHAPTER 13
I couldn’t refuse when Lanre persuaded me with his compelling sweet eyes that sparkled with pure concern and affection, to stay at the hospital for a bed rest. He made sure he was the only one who was attending to me. He attended to my treatment tenderly and overfed me with good food. We chatted happily late into night as he told me everything about him. I realized he was really a good human.
He’d gotten new clothes for me to change into, the following day. It was a black body fitted gown that was satisfactorily above my knees. The black gown with a v-neck which modestly revealed my cleavage, combined with my black shiny high-heeled shoes, and the deep red lipstick on my lips, was just what I needed to for the appearance of a refined, classy but dangerous b.i.t.c.h. I wanted to go home with.
I got home in the evening as I’d targeted the time Darlington would have gotten home from work. I wasn’t wrong. I stepped into the living room and met him sitting on the couch. The TV was on but his gaze wasn’t trained on it. He was staring intensely at the wall clock and his mobile phone which was placed beside him. I wondered if he’d been waiting for me.
“Evening hubby! Trust your day went well? Mine was fantabulous. Good night, I’m off to bed.” I announced to him without waiting for a reply and started walking out of the living room. He stared at me as if I’d grown two heads.
“Wait, what?” He stood up from his seat and yelled exasperatedly. I stopped in my track and turned back to face him.
“What is what?” I replied him begrudgingly. He looked somewhat angry but hesitant to show the anger.
“You know what! You know the what I’m asking of.” He stated flatly. I rolled my eyes at his childish behavior.
“If you won’t say what the problem is, then I will leave you to your business. Good night.” I replied him coldly and wanted to walk away but he stopped me again.
“Wait… You just came in, spewed gibberish and wanted to simply walk into your room to sleep. Shouldn’t you tell me where you’ve been since yesterday that you left home? I mean, you left this house since yesterday without informing your husband…you spent the night outside, and came in like you’ve just spent one hour outside. You even changed your clothes? You did! Will you tell me that you’ve packed a new set of dress in that tiny handbag in your hand?” He spat out frustratedly as he eyed my dress. I could see he was worked up. I peered at his face and smiled inwardly. I could see my inaction are starting to make him anxious and apprehensive.
“Wait hubby, why does it seems like you’re pained because I didn’t inform you of my whereabouts? When did you start developing curiosity in knowing what I do or my whereabouts?” I inquired with surprise. He seethed with anger but still managed to comport himself.
“Have you forgotten that you’re my wife?” He snapped at me. I smiled gently at his ridiculous question even though I was seething inside.
“I didn’t forget. I can’t ever forget. I remember I’m your wife, that was why I informed you of my outing yesterday, but since you didn’t deem it fit to inquire about the occasion or reason for the outing, you don’t have to be bothered whether I come back home or not.” I said and graced his agitated view a small sweet smile, even though his view didn’t deserve my precious sweet smile. He gritted.
“Do not evade the question. Where were you coming from? Why did you sleep outside last night? What are you up to? What have you been planning or doing? I know you’re mischievous, you can decide to just be crazy for no reason. I know the kind of woman you are, so don’t think you can get me worked up or apprehensive by your silent treatment. I know you have something up your sleeves, you’re full of dirty cheap tricks. There’s no way you won’t be planning something against me after what I did to you that night. Now, give me a comeback like you used to do. Yell, scream, snap at me, do whatever…” He was out of breath by the time he finished.
We shot daggers at each other for some seconds in absolute silence, that it even seemed we held our breaths for those seconds because of the rage. I was enraged at the painfully memories of that fateful night flooded my brain. I seethed in anger but bit the insides of my cheeks to calm myself down and not give him the satisfaction that his actions actually got to me and affected me deeply. I closed my eyes and opened them after a second to flash a bright sweet smile at him. He was surprised.
“It’s obvious you’re already apprehensive, hubby! What happened to the mighty Darlington, who can never be shaken?” I asked him mockingly, with my sweet smile again. He was completely disturbed.
“I’m not apprehensive. You can’t shake me. I just want to know what you’re up to, so we can both engage in that fight fairly. But since you’ve decided to remain indifferent, I’d love you to know that your lucky days, in this house, are over. I’m going to start tormenting you that you will eventually pack out of this house by yourself.” He said with the tough facade he put on, but the way he blinked his eyes and breathed heavily while speaking made me realize he was taut inside. My smile got bigger and bigger. I later laughed out loudly.
“Alright hubby, let’s see who has the upper hand.” I said and smirked at him. He gritted his jaw tightly. I kept on smiling as I walked into my bedroom.
“What exactly is this cra.zy woman up to???” I heard him yelled to himself as I was out of his sight. I smirked mischievously.
